India sent six wrestlers to the Paris Olympics with five competing in the women’s category while Aman Sehrawat was the sole representative in the men’s category. Aman won bronze in the 57kg men’s freestyle category but there were no medals for the women’s contingent.

According to Sanjay Singh, India could have done better had they not concentrated on the wrestler's protest, which made the headlines in the build-up to the Olympics. For the entire 2023, wrestlers were seen protesting against then-WFI chief and Member of Parliament from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The WFI was banned by the United World Wrestling (UWW) which saw wrestlers get depleted of preparations and participation from several events during the majority of the year.

Despite all the chaos surrounding the WFI, India could yet clinch two medals at the Paris Games which concluded on Sunday. While Aman had already won the bronze, Vinesh, who was disqualified, filed a petition for a silver medal at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). If she is successful in her appeal India will bag two medals in wrestling from the Paris Games.

On the flip side, Aman’s medal on Friday also meant that India has won at least one medal in wrestling for the fifth consecutive Olympics having started the tradition in the Beijing Games in 2008.

His appeal made the Upper House of the Indian Parliament (Rajya Sabha) burst into laughter, but it was Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar's cheeky response went viral on social media.&nbsp;

During his speech in the Rajya Sabha, Singh said, "I was reading their budget. They have decreased the budget for jails as well. At least increase the budget for jails. You have only allocated Rs 300 crore."&nbsp;

Notably, Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in October 2023 in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam. He was granted bail this year in April.

In addition to Singh, the ED also arrested other APP leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and ex-deputy CM Manish Sisodia in the same case.&nbsp;

The Delhi government had implemented the policy on November 17, 2021. But it was scrapped at the end of September 2022. Corruption allegations have been levelled against the party, which AAP denies.

Singh recently accused the BJP of "messing" with the health of Kejriwal, who is currently&nbsp;in Tihar jail. While addressing a press conference, he said that the chief minister's medical report shows that anything can happen to him at any time.&nbsp;

"The BJP is messing with Kejriwal’s health. Initially, they were saying that he is eating sweets and trying to spike his sugar levels but now they are saying that he has reduced his food intake. Why will someone do this and pose a threat to their own life?" Singh said.&nbsp;

"There is a conspiracy to kill Kejriwal," he added.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court bench granted bail&nbsp;to Singh following the ED's no-objection and allowed him to resume political activities but restricted him from commenting on the case. The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday (Apr 2) granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh in the Delhi liquor policy case.&nbsp;

A bench of the apex court, as per reports, directed that Singh be released on bail on terms and conditions set by the trial court.&nbsp;

"We direct that Sanjay Singh be released on bail on terms and conditions fixed by the trial court. We clarify that the concession given today will not be treated as a precedence. He will be allowed to continue with his political activities." 
 
The ED had said that it does&nbsp;not object to granting bail to Singh during the pendency of proceedings under sections 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

<h2>Sanjay Singh in jail since October 2023</h2>

The bench comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Dipankar Datta, and Justice P B Varale questioned the Enforcement Directorate (ED) about the need for further custody of Singh.&nbsp;

Hearing Singh's plea challenging his arrest and remand by the ED, the Supreme Court noted that Singh had already spent six months in jail.

The bench told Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing on behalf of the ED, that no money had been recovered from Singh's possession and suggested that the allegation of him receiving a ₹2 crore ($239,887) bribe could be examined during the trial.&nbsp;

Singh was arrested by the ED on October 4 last year.

Previously, in the high court, the AAP leader had applied for bail, citing that he had been in custody for over three months and that no role had been attributed to him in the predicate offence.

However, the probe agency ED at the time opposed Singh's bail plea, alleging his involvement in acquiring, possessing, concealing, dissipating, and using proceeds of crime related to the Delhi liquor scam during the 2021-22 policy period.&nbsp;

The ED also claimed that Singh had illicitly gained money or kickbacks from the liquor policy scam and had conspired with others.

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday (Apr 2) granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh in the Delhi liquor policy case. A bench of the apex court, as per reports, directed that Singh be released on bail on terms and conditions set by the trial court. "We direct that Sanjay Singh be released on bail on terms and conditions fixed by the trial court. We clarify that the concession given today will not be treated as a precedence. He will be allowed to continue with his political activities." The ED had said that it does not object to granting bail to Singh during the pendency of proceedings under sections 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The suspension comes after&nbsp;WFI failed to follow&nbsp;the provisions of the constitution of WFI while announcing a hasty plan to host the wrestling nationals.

The WFI had announced the plans to hold the nationals for U-15 and U-20 age group before the end of ongoing year, that is, in the next seven days.

The ministry, in its statement said&nbsp;the announcement was made in 'haste' as it didn't give the wrestlers sufficient notice. The ministry also found the decision to hold nationals on such short notice in breach of the WFI constitution.

As per Article XI of the WFI &nbsp;constitution under the Heading ‘Notices and Quorum for Meetings’, &nbsp;minimum notice period for EC meeting is 15 clear days and quorum is of 1/3rd of representatives. Even for Emergency EC meeting, minimum notice period is 7 clear days with quorum requirement of 1/3rd of representatives," read the ministry's statement.

The ministry also observed that the newly elected body "appears to be in complete control of former office bearers in complete disregard to the Sports Code."

The WFI has been instructed to suspend all its activities till further orders by the ministry.

Notably, new chief Sanjay Singh is a close aide of the former WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh who has been facing sexual harassment&nbsp;charges. Many prominent wrestlers including Olympic gold medal winners Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia were part of the protest against Brij Bhushan since earlier this year.

"The business of the Federation is being run from the premises controlled by former office bearers. Which is also alleged premises wherein sexual harassment of the players have been alleged and present the court is hearing the matter," the ministry also observed.

Sanjay Singh succeeds Brij Bhushan Singh as new WFI president, paves way to lift ban on organisation

A Delhi court Thursday sent senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate for five days, a day after the anti-money laundering agency arrested him in the Delhi excise policy case.

Special Judge M K Nagpal remanded Singh in ED custody till Oct. 10 to enable the federal probe agency to interrogate him.

The AAP Rajya Sabha MP will be produced before the court on the expiry of his custody.

While being brought to the courtroom, Singh said his arrest was “an act of injustice” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi whose party was “going to lose the next Lok Sabha elections”.

Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday in connection with its money laundering probe linked to the 2021-22 Delhi Excise policy case, in a huge blow to the city's ruling Aam Aadmi Party.

"This is Modiji's injustice. He will lose the election, he is losing the election," he told journalists.

Later, when the court asked him whether he wanted to say something, Singh claimed he was being treated unfairly.

“Sir, Amit Arora gave tens of statements, Dinesh Arora gave several statements, but they did not remember my name. I'm not so unknown that they forgot my name. Now they have suddenly remembered… There's no separate law. I was not summoned even once. Why different law for me?” the AAP leader said rebutting the ED's claim he received Rs 2 crore from Dinesh Arora, a businessman accused in the case who has now turned an approver.&nbsp;

During the hearing, the ED sought Singh's custody saying several people were yet to be examined and confronted with him. The agency said it also wanted to confront Singh with data extracted from his phone.

The Enforcement Directorate alleged Singh received Rs 3 crore in two tranches.

“The money was delivered to his residence. Dinesh Arora cross-checked with him also and he confirmed it… An investigation has revealed that two crore cash was given. A total of three crore money was given,” the ED said.

When the agency said it wanted to confront Singh with digital evidence extracted from his mobile phone, the court told its counsel it could be done even without taking him into custody.&nbsp;

“Why do you want to confront him with the phone? You can extract the data even otherwise,” the judge said.

Senior advocate Mohit Mathur, representing Singh, opposed the ED's application seeking his remand, saying the agency's witness Dinesh Arora was not trustworthy.&nbsp;

“He was an accused first, then in a quid pro quo he turned witness. His stand is changing. He is an accused, turns approver, and gives a statement; the statement is not favourable to ED, ED arrests him and he turns approver in the ED case. He changes statement and ED arrests me on that statement,” Singh's counsel said.

Delhi Court sends AAP leader Sanjay Singh to ED custody till Oct 10

The Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, on Thursday (Oct 5), flocked to Rajghat, Mahatma Gandhi's memorial, and held a prayer meeting for the "liberation" of people from the "corrupt" AAP government in the city.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva stated that their party's struggle to liberate people from the clutches of the "corrupt" AAP government headed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will continue.

He claimed that Kejriwal was the "kingpin" of the alleged liquor scam in Delhi further reiterating Mahatma Gandhi's teachings who said alcohol destroys both the body and the soul.

"Kejriwal has not only destroyed the soul but also the entire Aam Aadmi Party," Sachdeva said, launching an attack on the AAP National Convener and the Delhi Chief Minister.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has been hitting out at the Kejriwal government since Wednesday (Oct 4), after AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a Delhi excise policy-related case.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh was arrested on Wednesday (Oct 4) by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi excise policy case.&nbsp;

Earlier in the day, the central agency searched his residence in India's capital in connection with its money laundering investigation into the alleged irregularities in Delhi excise policy 2021-22.&nbsp;

According to the officials, the premises of others linked to the case were also covered during the search operation. The ED said that they earlier questioned the members of staff and those linked to the 51-year-old Rajya Sabha MP. &nbsp;

ED claimed that the AAP leader helped formulate and implement the excise policy which benefited certain liquor manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers.&nbsp;

Authorities alleged that the Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22 to grant licences to liquor traders allowed cartelisation and favoured specific dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge strongly refuted by the AAP.&nbsp;

On the arrest of Singh, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva said, "Today, one thing is clear that the truth cannot be hidden...After Sanjay Singh, it's Arvind Kejriwal."&nbsp;

A Member of Parliament (MP) from the upper house (Rajya Sabha) of the Indian Parliament, Sanjay Singh was arrested by financial watchdog Enforcement Directorate (ED) for his alleged involvement in the liquor policy scam.

Earlier on Wednesday (Oct 4), his residence in Delhi was raided by the ED.

The raids against Singh took place after he was named by businessman Dinesh Arora, an accused in the case, who later turned 'approver'.

Singh’s arrest has already sparked a political controversy, with AAP’s top leader and Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal stating that the move showed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anxiety.&nbsp;

<h2>Third high-profile arrest</h2>

This marks the third significant arrest involving the AAP. In May of the previous year, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain was apprehended on charges of money laundering, which allegedly involved four companies associated with him.

However, the most substantial blow to the party came in February of this year when the then Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and close associate of Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, was arrested by the CBI in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam.

The liquor policy case is currently under investigation by both the CBI and the ED. This policy, introduced in November 2021, entailed the government's withdrawal from the retail sale of liquor, allowing private licensees to operate stores.&nbsp;

In July 2022, Delhi Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar raised concerns about significant violations in the policy and alleged that liquor license holders had received "undue benefits."

ED arrests AAP leader Sanjay Singh in Delhi govt's alleged excise policy corruption case

India's law enforcement agency Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a search at the residence of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh as part of a money laundering investigation connected to the controversial Delhi liquor policy case.

ED officials arrived at the Delhi home of the Rajya Sabha MP early morning on Wednesday (Oct 4).&nbsp;The case revolves around the excise policy of the Delhi government in 2021, which was subsequently revoked. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also faced nearly nine hours of questioning in April as part of the investigation.

In February, former deputy chief minister of the AAP government in Delhi, Manish Sisodia, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the same case but he has consistently denied any wrongdoing.&nbsp;

<h2>Connections with businessman Dinesh Arora</h2>

Businessman Dinesh Arora, an approver in the case, alleged that Sanjay Singh introduced him to Manish Sisodia. The former Delhi deputy CM was the excise minister at the time.

Singh has already responded to the allegations.&nbsp;Earlier in May, he wrote a letter to Finance Secretary TV Somanathan, claiming that the ED director and assistant director had wrongly linked his name to the alleged liquor scam, damaging his public image and reputation.

He demanded the prosecution of these officers and had already sent a legal notice to them for an open and public apology for defaming him.&nbsp;

According to ED sources cited by ANI news agency, Sanjay Singh's name appeared four times in the ED's charge sheet, with one wrong reference where his name was mentioned instead of Rahul Singh, who was the then excise commissioner.

Importantly, Singh was never named as an accused by the ED, which has filed three charge sheets in the case. He was neither summoned nor had his statement recorded in connection with the case, despite references to him in the chargesheets.

<h2>Allegations of corruption in liquor policy</h2>

The CBI alleged&nbsp;that liquor companies were involved in shaping the excise policy, which would have resulted in a 12 per cent&nbsp;profit for these firms. The agency claims that a liquor lobby, referred to as the "South Group," paid kickbacks in this matter.

Of the proposed 12 per cent profit, six per cent was allegedly funnelled to public servants through intermediaries.

The ED is actively investigating the alleged laundering of these kickbacks, which has raised significant concerns about corruption within the Delhi liquor policy.

ED officials arrived at the Delhi home of the Rajya Sabha MP early morning on Wednesday (Oct 4). The case revolves around the excise policy of the Delhi government in 2021, which was subsequently revoked. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also faced nearly nine hours of questioning in April as part of the investigation. In February, former deputy chief minister of the AAP government in Delhi, Manish Sisodia, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the same case but he has consistently denied any wrongdoing. Connections with businessman Dinesh Arora Businessman Dinesh Arora, an approver in the case, alleged that Sanjay Singh introduced him to Manish Sisodia. The former Delhi deputy CM was the excise minister at the time. Singh has already responded to the allegations. Earlier in May, he wrote a letter to Finance Secretary TV Somanathan, claiming that the ED director and assistant director had wrongly linked his name to the alleged liquor scam, damaging his public image and reputation. According to ED sources cited by ANI news agency, Sanjay Singh's name appeared four times in the ED's charge sheet, with one wrong reference where his name was mentioned instead of Rahul Singh, who was the then excise commissioner. Importantly, Singh was never named as an accused by the ED, which has filed three charge sheets in the case. He was neither summoned nor had his statement recorded in connection with the case, despite references to him in the chargesheets. Allegations of corruption in liquor policy The CBI alleged that liquor companies were involved in shaping the excise policy, which would have resulted in a 12 per cent profit for these firms. The agency claims that a liquor lobby, referred to as the "South Group," paid kickbacks in this matter. India: ED sleuths conduct early morning raid on AAP leader Sanjay Singh's residence over liquor policy case

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) parliamentarian Sanjay Singh was on Monday (July 24) suspended from the Indian parliament's upper house Rajya Sabha &nbsp;for the remainder of the monsoon session for "repeatedly violating directions of the Chair."

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar first called out Sanjay Singh for interrupting the proceedings of the House when it had taken up the Question Hour amidst demonstrations by the Opposition over its demand for a statement from Prime Minister on the violence in Manipur and an in-detail discussion on the issue.

After the house resumed proceedings at 12 noon, Singh came near the Chairman’s podium over opposition demands. Dhankar asked him to return to his seat. However, the AAP member kept protesting, and the Chairman named him.

Soon after the Chairman named Sanjay Singh, Leader of the House Piyush Goyal moved a motion demanding the Chair to suspend the AAP member, saying this kind of behaviour “is completely against the ethics and rules of the House.”

“Sanjay Singh should be suspended from the entire session of the House,” he said.

The Chairman then put the motion for approval of the House and said Sanjay Singh was being suspended for the remainder of the monsoon session of Parliament "for having repeatedly violated the directives of the Chair". The Chairman then adjourned the House till 2 pm.

<h2>Dhankar had warned Sanjay Singh last week</h2>

Last week, Dhankhar had cautioned Sanjay Singh saying that he will be forced to name him after he repeatedly demonstrated against the proposed bill to replace the Centre's ordinance for control over services in the national capital, Delhi.

His warning to Singh came after the AAP members were urged to take their seats as he briefed the House about the proceedings of the Business Advisory Committee.

AAP was among the opposition parties who demanded a statement from PM Modi in Parliament on the ongoing situation in Manipur and also an in detail discussion on the issue.

Dhankhar said he had received 27 notices under Rule 267. TMC leader Derek O’Brien sought to raise the demands of opposition parties. The Chairman cautioned him and adjourned the House till 12 noon.

The Opposition has rejected the government's proposal for a short-duration discussion.

The Monsoon session of Parliament began on July 20 and will continue till August 11.

The answer to both the queries would have been in the negative if not for Sanjay Singh. However, Mr. Singh is one such personality who has single-handedly kept Indian tennis' flag high with his presence as a coach of Brazilian youngster Luisa Stefani and American star Hayley Carter. EXCERPTS: Like mentioned, not often do we see Indian coaches for foreign players. You have changed it all in many ways. How did it all happen? (Laughs) Well, I was a player initially. I was playing in Orissa Open. It so happened that I was playing in one court and the other player had a cramp. Because I used to work as the helper, I was asked to chip in and help. I assisted him and came back to play my match. At that time, I thought we don't have focus on working on players' fitness in India. So, I thought to take this up. That's where I started as a physiotherapist. During Davis Cup tie, Ramesh Krishnan's trainer didn't turn up, hence, they called me and I worked with him. When his trainer came back, Leander asked me to join him. There is no end to learning. You learn from small kids also. In India, they think they know everything. They don't respect others. Among Indian players, only few are travelling abroad for training and all. You need to have awareness and the learning ability within you. Always!. In one of your interviews, you rightly pointed out how India is a country where people like to stay in their own preconceived views or opinions. Many labelled you as 'one who gives massages to Leander Paes'. Was it a conscious effort to revamp your image or you never paid heed to all such claims? Before I started off, I was a tennis player. Since there was no body looking after the players' body, their demands off the court and their suffering, I started working on this aspect. With Leander, I used to work with him. But since my knowledge of tennis was always there, he kept me involved asking 'Dadda (brother), what to do, did I mess it up?' I never had to tell people what I was doing with Leander. We both knew where we were heading and that's what mattered. End of the day 'let the racket talk'. It (criticism) never bothered me as it was all behind my back. Hence, many talented players' careers are now over. They stop working on themselves after a bit of initial success. It is sad. Many didn't want to learn that often. Leander always tries to grasp more in every scenario. Unlike in India, I get much more respect in Florida. For our Prime Minister, they still call him as 'the chaiwala (tea-seller)' but one doesn't see, or acknowledge, his journey and development. We need to respect each other and see one's growth. Both are different individuals and, hence, have different styles, strengths and weaknesses. How did your association begin with the duo? What defines them of both? Can you highlight few areas where they have shown vast improvement under your watchful eyes? When I used to travel with Leander, my base was in Florida. During my off-season, I used to train at Saddlebrook Tennis Academy. Back then, I was asked if I can train this young girl called Luisa Stefani. I saw her and was floored by her talent and skills. I was like 'wow, this girl has fire, she is fast and comes to the net'. Since she wanted to be pro, she had to change her visa. She couldn't get the visa initially and, thus, went back. In 2018, she returned. Then we started playing and practicing. There was one month of intense training. Her parents then asked me to travel with her. So I started in April 2019. In May, she won the Italy Championship in England. Thus, she had a chance to enter the Wimbledon but she was alternate, hence, couldn't get in. The same fate followed in the US Open. On the other hand, Hayley was looking for a partner. Luisa asked me and I told her play with Hayley. They won the Uzbekistan Championship (i.e. Tashkent Open) in 2019 and then they lost the third round in Australian Open 2020. Luisa has a big serve whereas Hayley attacked the net more often. Only drawback was the overhead shot. That was the area we were lagging behind. But we started combining well and then after that Hayley got hurt in Wimbledon this year. Then we got Gabriela Dabrowski with Luisa. We reached the final of Cincinnati 2021 and semi-final of US Open. During the pandemic, we weren't training. We used to be in the bubble. We were getting tested. RT-PCR tests and being confined inside was the new normal. Mentally it was very tough and, hence, many players are now burning out. The only time they opened up little bit was during the Cincinnati (Open). Life was tough. We couldn't go out. One had to resort to Uber Eats. We used to have a table downstairs in the lobby where the food was kept by the Uber guy and then we had to take it. It was all about dealing with the bio bubble life and surviving (sighs). I used to work in the hotel as a helper supervisor. In 1996, it was tough for me to manage work and my tennis stuff. So I left my job and came on board with Paes. He wanted me to learn everything because he never trusted anyone else. Let me tell you, I used to travel with a stringing machine as he was playing so much. Everyday 7-8 rackets were used. But, Leander has always encouraged me. He used to ask me to interact with people, observe others and share inputs. He always believed in me. I used to be his brother, buddy and everything. He says he wants to retire in Wimbledon 2022. Let's see. He tells me 'Dadda, you will get me ready for Wimbledon'. We both call each other 'Dadda'. That sums up the whole equation, doesn't it? Your views regarding the status of the game in the country at present? In India, they should have a team who knows about the game firstly. Mr Sundar Iyer (Secretary of the Maharashtra Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) and Manager of Indian Davis Cup Team) is doing great in getting tournaments in India. He's doing very well. See, if youngsters play more tournaments, sponsor them. Work for the players. Give them their due by supplying resources and everything that matters to build their careers. Even a peon is getting an India jacket. Give it to people who need it more. They need to sponsor juniors so that they can play tournaments outside India. It helps in building their games at a young level. For the unversed, in Brazil there are 7-8 juniors playing on tours. How many in India? Hardly! For players, they should learn from Leander. If they do good in one game, they get complacent. Their collars go up after one good win. They don't know next week is a new week. Nowadays, we tend to go for shortcuts. Leander was never like this. Now I'm in states, when I see things there, players never have to worry about tennis court. Here, staff ask for INR 100 as court fees. Wherever you play, they will be charging you. How can a youngster manage all this, who is just trying to come up the ranks? Unless and until they change the entire system, nothing will happen. Hence, many players move abroad to train and manage themselves. Here for everything, they will charge and still not provide all facilities. They've to change a lot. We have to be player-friendly and not administration-friendly. India is such a great country. We have everything. But we face so many problems unnecessarily. Base has to change. Believe me, we have such great potential and that we can do wonders. But youngsters don't get support. In abroad, players get full support. Outside India, the association is taking care of players and coaches. In Brazil, association are paying for trainers who are travelling with players. Unimaginable. It cannot even be expected in India. Even such thinking is missing in the country. Their government called and felicitated me. As a foreign coach, they are calling and honouring me. This doesn't happen in India. The coach can give you the idea, but who will bring you to the court -- a trainer. If you have a Ferrari but the engine doesn't work properly, it is as good as a showpiece. Hence, a lot needs to change. Be more player-friendly, focus on coaches and trainers, give them their due and build youngsters' careers from the junior level itself.

It had been passed with a majority of 311 votes against 80 votes in the Lok Sabha earlier.

The Bill seeks to grant Indian citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Zoroastrian communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

Singh, wearing a garland of onions, raised slogans in front of Mahatma Gandhi`s statue in the Parliament premises against rising onion prices.

"There is a big scam related to onions. The central government is saying that 32 thousand metric tonnes of onion have decayed. The Delhi government had demanded 10 trucks of onion every day till December 9. From November 23, our onion supply was stalled by the central government," Singh told ANI.

Earlier, Delhi`s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on December 1 accused the Centre of intentionally creating a scarcity of onions in the city-state.

"When the onion prices started to rise, on September 5 the Centre wrote to Delhi government that they had 56,000 metric tonne stock of onions and asked the Delhi government to procure onions as required," he said.

"Soon, the Delhi government intimated the Central government that it would procure and distribute 10 trucks of onions, that is, 2.5 lakh kilos at a subsidised price in Delhi every day so that the hoarding of onions could be stopped," he said.

Earlier on November 20, the Union Cabinet approved the import of 1.2 lakh metric tonnes of onion in view of the high prices of the essential commodity in the market.
