Himanta Biswa Sarma takes oath as Assam's CM for 2nd consecutive term

Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for the second consecutive term on Tuesday (May 12, 2026) at Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, Guwahati. This marks the beginning of the BJP-led NDA government for the third straight tenure in the state. The swearing-in ceremony was held in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers and chief ministers from several NDA-ruled states.

The oath was administered by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at 11.40 am. Alongside Sarma, four ministers were also sworn-in include BJP leaders Ajanta Neog and Rameswar Teli, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Atul Bora and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) leader Charan Boro.

The development came after the NDA clinched a landslide victory in the Assam Assembly elections, winning 102 seats in the 126-member House. The BJP alone secured 82 seats, while alliance partners AGP and BPF won 10 seats each.

Third consecutive term of the NDA government

This marks the third straight NDA government in Assam since the BJP-led alliance first assumed power in 2016 under the leadership of now Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Himanta Biswa Sarma has also become the first non-Congress leader in the state to hold the chief minister’s post for two consecutive terms.

Before the swearing-in ceremony, Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal described the occasion as a “great day for the people of Assam” and expressed gratitude to voters for once again placing their trust in the NDA for a third successive term. “With the support of the people of Assam, NDA for the third term is going to form the government under the leadership of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. This is a great day, and we are really thankful to the people of Assam," Sonowal said.
