After missing several deadlines Congress Working Committee (CWC) is expected to approve an election schedule on Monday.

According to the party constitution, the CWC meeting is required to approve the schedule for the election of the party president. This will be the final step for Rahul Gandhi to be elevated as President of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

And as it is unlikely that there will be a contender to challenge Rahul, his election will be complete by mid-December.

The decision came after a meeting was held on Saturday.

The elevation of Rahul Gandhi will mean that he will also be heading the final phase of the politically crucial Gujarat elections as AICC chief.

Rahul's taking charge of the party will bring the end of an era of Sonia Gandi heading as party chief and it will end a long apprenticeship that saw Rahul being named vice-president in January 2013.
