Exciting news for Shrek fans as makers teased the release date of an upcoming Shrek film. While the film is still in development, DreamWorks Animation sure knows how to keep up the excitement.
Shrek 5 will bring back the OG cast of Mile Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz. The film will release on July 1, 2026, and promises to bring a new story to the big screen for its fans.
In addition to the trio, Shrek 5 will also have Antonio Banderas as the feline Puss in Boots according to reports.
Shrek will have Walt Dohrn as director who also served as writer and artist on Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third. He was incharge of story on Shrek Forever After. In the film, he also voiced Rumpelstiltskin. Brad Ableson serves as co-director.
Shrek 5 will be produced by franchise returner Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri.
Eddie Murphy was the first to open up about a new Shrek film in the works. In June, he spoke about voice recording for the film which is a Donkey spinoff movie. At the time, he said, “We started doing [‘Shrek 5’] months ago. I did this. I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. ‘Shrek’ is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a ‘Shrek,’ and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].”
There are four films in the Shrek franchise. The first film dropped in 2001 and became a hugely popular film franchise. The movie became the first Oscar winner in the animated feature category. “
The Shrek franchise also includes Puss in Boots spinoff titles, the most recent of which, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, opened in theatres in December 2022.
