Alpine reveals all-electric A290 hot hatch EV with video game style challenges

French automaker Alpine has introduced its inaugural electric vehicle model, the A290. This marks the beginning of a series of upcoming BEVs from Alpine, enhancing its petite yet dynamic vehicle lineup. The A290 boasts an array of enticing features, including bidirectional charging capabilities, in-cabin driving tutorials, and interactive challenges reminiscent of video games.

Found in the mid 1950s, Société des Automobiles Alpine SAS or Alpine is focused on creation of compact motorsport automobiles. Currently owned by France’s Renault Group, Alpine had a cooperation with the OEM beginning in the 1970. Alpine traces its origin to allies with Renault; the French car giant assisted the revival of Alpine’s failing passenger car division in the early 2010s and also helped in the creation of the A110 model which has been sold in Europe since 2017.

This was followed by the realisation of an initial concept in early-on to develop a new electric sports coupe through the partnership with Lotus Technology; however, by 2023, such ambitions were abandoned.

Commenting on this, Alpine’s CEO earlier promised to bring two more “Porsche-like” EV units to the US market that is crucial for the brand’s success. Thus, by the end of the autumn 2023, Renault commenced its searching for new partners to finance the transformation of Alpine to the new age electric cars and began negotiations with Geely from China.

Before these releases, there is anticipation that Alpine will introduce its first pure electric vehicle model to the public, known as the A290 which was previewed through a concept car in 2023 based on the design language of the A110.

On the part of technology, Alpine presents the A290 EV as festooned with modern technologies. Fitted to a skateboard-like base, the hot hatch focuses on achieving an ideal weight distribution, which in turn leads to improved handling. The A290 has a 52 kWh battery pack, enabling a 380 km (236 miles) WLTP range and allowing for charging at up to 100 kW, ensuring that its charging time at high-speed terminals is efficient.

Besides, the A290 comes with higher-tech functionalities like heat pump, bi-directional charging system which lets it work as a power source, V2L and V2G power transfer features. Powered by a single motor, the A290 maintains a nimble weight of 1,479 kg (3,260 lbs), accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 6.4 seconds, delivering up to 220 bhp and 300 Nm of torque. Notably, an "Overtake" (OV) function activated by a red button on the steering wheel provides a temporary power boost for quick maneuvers.

Enhancing the driving experience further, the A290 EV offers the Alpine Telemetrics feature, providing drivers with access to Live Data, Coaching, and Challenges categories, enhancing engagement and performance behind the wheel.
