Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened to shut down two military bases used by the United States which host American nuclear warheads as well as other NATO weapons.

The move comes as Washington warned Ankara of sanctions for buying Russian weapons.

The bases had played a key role in US military operations in West Asia especially in its fight against the Islamic State.

The threat comes amid US warning of sanctions against its NATO ally Turkey, for purchasing the Russian S-400 missile defence system.

Earlier, Washington removed Ankara from its F-35 fighter jet programme.

Remember, the US can impose sanctions against nations which buy Russian weapons under its 'CAATSA' or 'Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act'.

Tensions have been escalating between the two nations, especially after Turkey invaded Syria following the withdrawal of US troops.

Recently, the US Senate passed a resolution recognising the early 20th-century mass killing of Armenians in Turkey as a genocide.
