Four states have marijuana on the ballot, one will vote on psychedelics

Marijuana and magic mushrooms on the ballot

US Election Day is here and people will not only be voting to choose their next president but also to reach decisions on some important issues. Marijuana legislation is one such topic that will be on the ballot in four states.

Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Florida residents will be voting on the future of marijuana legalisation. Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, where medical and recreational marijuana is already legal, people will be voting to decide if it is possible to legalise psychedelics.

Here's everything you need to know about marijuana on the ballot.

Floridamarijuana legislation

In Florida, the ballot will have Amendment 3 which is about the legalisation of recreational marijuana as medical marijuana is already legal in the state. Voters need to decide on a state constitutional amendment which will allow adults 21 and up to possess, purchase and use marijuana for non-medical purposes.

Adults will be able to carry up to three ounces of marijuana and up to five ounces of marijuana concentrate.

It would also let Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers and other licensed state entities acquire, cultivate, process, manufacture, sell and distribute marijuana products and accessories.

Two initiatives pertaining to medical and recreational marijuana will be on the ballot. Initiative Measure 437 asks voters to consider legalising the use, possession and acquisition of up to five ounces of cannabis for medical purposes. This would only be provided if the person has a written recommendation from a health care provider.

Initiative Measure 438 asks voters to decide whether registered private entities can manufacture, possess and deliver cannabis for medical purposes. The statute would also establish the Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission to regulate the industry.

North Dakotamarijuana legislation

Medical marijuana is already legal in North Dakota. Initiative Measure 5 will ask voters about the legalisation of recreational marijuana who would need to consider a new chapter of legislation.

It would allow adults 21 and up to produce, possess, sell and use cannabis. It would also protect those who are 21 and above and use cannabis. Those who violate the chapter will be punished.

South Dakotamarijuana legislation

Medical marijuana is legal in the state and Initiated Measure 29 asks voters to consider legislation to allow the manufacture, possession consumption and distribution of marijuana by adults 21 and above. However, its use won't be allowed in schools and other places where tobacco is prohibited.

Massachusetts onpsychedelics

Massachusetts already allows both medical and recreational marijuana. So Question 4 on the ballot will ask voters about the possibility of legalising psychedelics in the state. It would allow possession, growth and use of "certain natural psychedelic substances in certain circumstances". People can purchase natural psychedelic substances from approved locations.

The psychedelics will be regulated and taxed.

The "natural psychedelic substances" that would be permitted include psilocybin and psilocyn which are found in mushrooms, and dimethyltryptamine, mescaline and ibogaine found in plants.

Adults 21 and up would also be permitted to grow psychedelic substances in a 12-foot-by-12-foot area in their homes.
