Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the US Open 2026 due to a right knee injury, leaving the tournament without one of its leading title contenders. The 24-year-old won his fifth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last month but has not played since suffering the knee injury earlier this month. He withdrew from the Cincinnati Open and also missed the Canadian Open, both important hard-court events ahead of the US Open.
“Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the U.S. Open this year,” Sinner said in a statement posted on X.
“We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.”
Sinner’s withdrawal was announced a day after world number two Carlos Alcaraz confirmed his participation in the tournament following a four-month break from competitive tennis.
Alcaraz defeated Sinner in last year’s US Open final and will now enter the tournament as the highest-ranked player. The Spaniard is also among the favourites to win the title despite his recent injury problems.
