Pakistan: Mentally ill man killed as hospital staff 'forgets' after locking him in store room

In Pakistan's Mianwali, the decomposing body of a mentally challenged elderly person was found in a locked store in District Headquarter Hospital on Thursday (May 30).
According to reports in the Pakistani media, in the month of February, the emergency responders brought an injured elderly man with a fractured leg to District Headquarters Hospital following an accident in Isakhel tehsil, about 240 km from Islamabad.
The person, identified as Mohammad Ali, son of Mohammad Asif, was admitted to the general ward.
According to a report in the Pakistani daily Dawn, during Mohammad Ali's stay, no relatives visited him. The patient was reportedly mentally challenged and could not speak up to the point of comprehensibility. As other patients and their kin complained, he was moved to a side room.
A few days ago,as the Punjab health secretary visited the hospital, the management feared an unspecified 'objectionable' behaviour from the patient due to which thestaffmoved him to a vacant store and locked him, reported Dawn.

Thereport further noted that the Mianwali District Headquarter hospital staff forgot to release Mohammad Ali even after health secretary's visit was over.
Days later, a foul odour was sourced at the door of the locked store room where Mohammad Ali was locked by the hospital staff.
When some staff members opened the locked store room, they found the decomposed body lying on the ground.
Mianwali Deputy Commissioner Khalid Javed Gorayia has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

An inquiry committee, headed by DHO (HR) Dr. Rafiqe Khan, was appointed, Dawn report added. An autopsy report is currently awaited. Besides, the hospital administration has also buried the body.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Amir Ahmed Khan told Dawn that "an inquiry is in progress to find those responsible".
