Debate on Asia Bibi postponed in EU parliament: Antonio Tajani informs PM Imran Khan

President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani made a phone call to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday thanking him for ensuring safety and security for Asia Bibi and her family.

Tajani also informed the Pakistanprime ministerthat the debate on Asia Bibi in the EU parliament has been postponed and also assured EU Parliament's cooperation with the government.

PM Imran Khan reaffirmed the government’s resolve to respect the judgment of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, adding that as citizens of Pakistan, Asia Bibi and her family wereentitled to all rights as guaranteed by the constitution of Pakistan.

Imran Khan also conveyed serious concerns of the governmenton the issue of blasphemous cartoons and caricatures of the holy prophet, underscoring the need to redouble efforts in European countries to avoid such provocative incidents and emphasised the need to raise greater awareness about religious sensitivities of Muslims, particularly the respect of prophet Muhammad and promote inter-faith harmony.

Khan stressed the need for respecting each other’s religious sentiments while calling for enhanced dialogue as well as cooperation for promoting inter-cultural and inter-faith harmony.

Khan welcomed the European Court's recent decisionon human right’swhich decidednot to allow acts of blasphemy under the cloak of right to freedom of expression.

The Pakistan prime minister also expressed the hope that European countries would follow the decision of the European Court and take steps to enhance respect for each other’s religions and inter-faith harmony.
