Know which six former chief ministers joined Indian PM Modi's new cabinet

Former Chief Ministers appointed as Union Cabinet Ministers

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's new cabinet was sworn in on June 9 and it includes six former Chief Ministers. The Modi cabinet comprises of 30 ministers. Notably, Prime Minister Modi himself was the Chief Minister of Gujarat before stepping onto the national stage.

Here're six former CMs who joined Prime Minister Modi's new cabinet:

1. Shivraj Singh Chouhan

A seasoned politician who served three terms as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has been sworn in as minister in PM Modi's new cabinet. Even after stepping down as CM, his influence and policies continue to shape the state's governance.

2. Manohar Lal Khattar

The former two-term Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, is a seasoned leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was at the helm of Haryana's administration since 2014. In March 2024, he stepped down from his chief ministerial position to makeway for Nayab Singh Saini to assume office.

3. Rajnath Singh

An influential leader who previously governed Uttar Pradesh and now plays a key role at the national level, Rajnath Singh, is once again roped in for the cabinet rank. He was UP chief minister from 2000 to 2002. Earlier, he also served as a Cabinet Minister for Road Transport and Highways in the Vajpayee Government.

4. Sarbananda Sonowal

Sonowal was the Chief Minister of Assam from May 24, 2016 to May 10, 2021. In the last government, he served as the Cabinet Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

5. Jitan Ram Manjhi

Jitan Ram Manjhi served as the Chief Minister of Bihar for a briefperiod from May 20, 2014 to February 20, 2015. He held several ministerial positions in the Bihar government before being appointed as the Chief Minister in May 2014, following the resignation of Nitish Kumar.

6. HD Kumaraswamy

The former Chief Minister of Karnataka, HD Kumaraswamy, was sworn in as a fresh face in PM Modi's new cabinet. He is from the Janata Dal (Secular) party and hails from a prominent political family in Karnataka. He is the son of former Prime Minister of India HD Deve Gowda and the brother of Karnataka MLA HD Revanna. His family has been influential in Karnataka politics for decades.
