
Family tragedy piled up for former Israel Defense Forces (IDF) chiefGadi Eisenkot in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. On Sunday (Nov. 17), the IDF announced thatCpt. Yogev Pazy, a platoon commander with the Kfir Brigade’s Nahshon Battalion, was declared deadalongside Staff Sgt. Noam Eitanafter an exchange of fire with Hamas militantsin the Beit Lahiya area of the Gaza Strip.
A report by The Times of Israel on Sunday said that Pazy was Eisenkot's nephew.
Eisenkot, who served as the IDF chief of staff from 2015 to 2019, is currently a member of Benny Gantz’s National Unity party.
The party joined the Benjamin Netanyahu government as part ofan emergency coalition in the aftermath of Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7 last year.
The Times of Israel report said thatEisenkot's son, 25-year-oldMaster Sgt. (res.) Gal Meir Eisenkot, was killed while fighting in Gaza in early December last year.
The former IDF chief then lost another nephew—Sgt. Maor Cohen Eisenkot—just the next day after his son's death.
On August 10 this year, Pazy had written a Facebook post on the occasion of what would have beenGal Meir Eisenkot's 26th birthday.
“Eight months and three days. But today is a day without sad speeches. Today is your birthday. So instead, I will share my thanks and a number of memories,” Pazy wrote.
The post was accompanied by several images of Pazy and Eisenkot throughout the years and a photograph of a tattoo that Pazy had gotten in Eisenkot’s memory.
