Joe Biden

US President Joe Biden, on Tuesday (July 23), returned to Washington just two days after announcing the end of his re-election bid and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party nominee in the upcoming 2024 election.

Wearing his trademark aviator glasses and carrying a surgical mask, Biden boarded Air Force One to Washington, where he will address America in his final address from the Oval Office on Wednesday night (July 24).

This was Biden's first public sighting after spending nearly a week recovering from COVID-19 at his home in Wilmington, Delaware, where he also deliberated on his 2024 candidacy.

Ultimately, he decided to drop his campaign and endorsed Harris for the race against Republican former President Donald Trump.

The 81-year-old Democrat will address the nation about his decision to not seek another term.

As per a Reuters report citing Biden's White House physician, the US president has recovered from his latest bout of COVID-19.

Addressing the nation

In Biden's upcoming speech, which could be his final Oval Office address, he will explain his decision to bow out of the November election and assure the public that he still has significant work to accomplish.

He announced on social media platform X that he would discuss "what lies ahead, and how I will finish the job for the American people" during the prime-time televised event. The address will be broadcast at 8:00 pm (0000 GMT Thursday).

As per AFP, he is expected to speak for eight to ten minutes. This will be his first speech since stepping down from the election race on Sunday (July 21).

Why did Joe Biden quit the election race?

Biden's decision follows weeks of pressure after a poor debate performance against Trump.

Despite stepping aside, Biden has vowed to remain active, focusing particularly on economic issues and efforts to secure a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
