Kolkata horror rape: Miscreants vandalise RG Kar Hospital, disrupt midnight protest - VIDEO

A peaceful protest against the brutal rape of a doctor in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata turned violent on Thursday (Aug 15) as miscreants entered RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and vandalised the property.

The protests began around 11:55 pm on Wednesday and had been described as "For women's independence on the midnight of independence" - referring to India gaining freedom from the colonisers at the stroke of midnight hour on August 15.

However, after the miscreants managed to infiltrate the protest, they attacked the demonstrators, including doctors and also damaged police vehicles.

“A mob of miscreants entered the hospital. The agitating doctors were attacked and had to flee. They even tried to enter the building where the junior doctor was raped andmurdered. Police stood as mute spectators,” alleged Subhendu Mullick, a senior resident doctor at the protest site.

Police officials had to fire tear gas and use force on the protesters who went on a rampage, nearly destroying the hospital. Images and videos on social media showed stones being pelted inside the campus which left several cops bloodied.

At least two police vehicles were also vandalised while a motorcycle was set on fir outside the hospital.

"What happened here is due to a wrong and motivated media campaign. Because of a malicious media campaign, Kolkata Police lost the trust of the people. There is so much pressure from the media," Kolkata Police chief Vineet Goyal said.

Autopsy shows gruesome nature of rape

The family of the 31-year-old trainee doctor in a recent interview gave a chilling account of how she was brutally raped, physically assaulted and killed.

The father recounted that the initial call from the hospital claimed their daughter had died by suicide, demanding their immediate presence.

According to the autopsy report,the accused, Sanjoy Roy, hit the victim so hard that the glasses of her spectacles shattered, piercing her eyes.

“Both her eyes and mouth were bleeding and injuries over the face. The victim also had bleeding from her private parts. She also has injuries in her belly, left leg, neck, in her right hand, ring finger and lips," it added.

Authorities estimate the time of death to be between 3 amand 5 amon Friday (Aug 9).
