Mumbai: A brief but tense moment unfolded at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Wednesday after a suspected security threat aboard an IndiGo flight turned out to be a false alarm.
According to airport officials, the scare began when a tissue paper bearing the word “Danger” was discovered inside the lavatory of an IndiGo aircraft preparing to depart for Ahmedabad. The handwritten note immediately raised concerns, prompting crew members to alert ground authorities as a precaution.
Treating the situation with utmost seriousness, airport security swiftly activated emergency protocols. The aircraft was isolated, and passengers were safely deboarded while multiple agencies, including the police, fire brigade, and the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS), rushed to the spot. The response caused brief disruption at the airport, with heightened security checks and movement restrictions in the area.
A thorough inspection of the aircraft and surrounding premises was carried out. After an extensive search operation, officials confirmed that no explosives or suspicious objects were found on board. Authorities subsequently declared the incident a hoax, bringing relief to passengers and airport staff.
Despite the all-clear, the incident has triggered a police investigation. Officials have registered a case against an unidentified individual and are now working to trace the origin of the note. CCTV footage from the aircraft and airport is being examined to identify who may have left the message and whether it was intended as a prank or something more serious.
Aviation authorities reiterated that even minor or ambiguous threats are treated with full caution, given the high safety standards in air travel. While the scare turned out to be unfounded, it underscores the importance of strict vigilance and rapid response systems in place at major airports.
Normal operations at the airport resumed shortly after the security clearance, and the flight was later cleared for departure following all necessary checks.
