It was an emotional evening in the Euro 2024 on Friday (July 5) after hosts Germany were eliminated from the tournament after a 119th-minute goal. The exit also marked the retirement of Toni Kroos from professional football as he dropped the curtains on hisillustrious career. However, the evening also had a highlycontroversial moment when Germany was denied a penalty in the 107th minute after Marc Cucurella's handball in the penalty area.

Penalazo para Alemania. Mano de Marc Cucurella muy claro.

Otra vez la UEFA y el VAR favoreciendo a España.

Germanyafter Marc Cucurella's handball

In the 107th minute, Jamal Musiala's effort from outside the box was travelling towards the goal with Cucurella standing in between the ball and the goal. With the Spanish defender extending his arm, the ball hit his hand which could have resulted in a penalty. However, referee Anthony Taylor denied giving a penalty to Germany deeming it to be an unnatural moment.

Replays however suggested that Cucurella denied the ball heading towards the goal and should have been penalised. Germany for their part was left fuming and agitated for not getting the penalty which could have saved their tournament and progressed further.

Was the referee right?

Despite the suspicion of handball, neither the referee nor the VAR were convinced of the penalty with the latter asking Taylor not to go to the monitor, when there was a brief review. However, there could have been a case of an offside in the build-up to the Musiala shot which resulted in the controversy. Musiala, who hit the ball at Cucurella's hand received the ball from Niclas Fullkrug who was deemed to be in the offside position.

While there was no confirmation of the offside as television replays were shown, naked eyes indicated that the German attacker was on the wrong side of the defender. If this was the case, the next phase of play during which the penalty incident happened became void and spared referee Taylor from the controversial moment.

The result means hosts Germany won’t lift the Euro while defending champions Italy are already out. This means there will be a new set of winners in the Euro 2024 with France and England now the favourites to win.
