Explained: What will happen if India-South Africa T20 World Cup final gets washed out on reserve day

The stage is setfor the T20 World Cup final as South Africa square off against India in a mouth-watering clash on Saturday (June 29) at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. The contest will be pivotal for both sides as India try to end their 17-year drought for a T20 World Cup title while South Africa will be on a hunt for their maiden world title. But rain could be an uninvited guest for the final and influence the result of the match.
The contest will have a reserve day which comes as a huge relief for the fans if rain plays spoilsport in the contest. However, if rain plays spoilsport on the reserve day, then the International Cricket Council (ICC) will face an unlikely situation that could see the set of fans divided.
What is the provision if reserve day gets washed out?
The match will only move into a reserve day if rain plays spoilsport on Saturday, meaning the match will start on Sunday from the point where it was stopped. A washout will only become effective on the reserve day if the team batting second does not play a minimum of 10 overs. Once the match is abandoned both India and South Africa will be declared joint winners with India adding to their only title from 2007 while South Africa will add a World Cup to their trophy cabinet.

The 2002 Champions Trophy final remains the only occasion when a senior ICC men’s final has been washed out. Both India and Sri Lanka were declared joint winners of the Champions Trophy with neither side able to stamp their authority in the rain-affected contest in Colombo.
