Cricket Australia overturns David Warner's leadership ban, now eligible to lead Sydney Thunder in BBL
Cricket Australia (CA) has lifted David Warner’s leadership ban after a review by the Conduct Commission on Friday (Oct 25). Warner, who was banned for a lifetime from leading the side, is now eligible to lead Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL) for the upcoming season. The CA banned Warner in 2018 from leading any side at the senior level after the sandpaper gate in South Africa, where he was the side's vice-captain.

"In its decision, the panel noted 'the respectful and contrite tone of his [Warner's] responses, as well as the content impressed the Review Panel and led it to the unanimous view that he was sincere and genuine in acknowledging responsibility for the conduct and in his statement that he had extreme remorse for his conduct'," CA's statement said.
After the infamous 2018 sandpaper gate scandal, Warner and Steve Smith were banned from international cricket for tampering with the ball in a Test match in South Africa. The issue came into the limelight after TV cameras caught the incident, which was later accepted by the Australian cricketers.
As a consequence of the events, Smith and Warner received bans while being prohibited from leading the side. Smith, however, would return to lead Australia after Tim Paine withdrew before the 2021-22 Ashes while new skipper Pat Cummins tested positive for COVID-19.

As things stand, Warner is in talks with Sydney Thunder with the possibility of him leading the side in the 2024-25 season. He has already proven his qualities as a leader having led SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) to the 2016 Indian Premier League (IPL) title. He was also Delhi Capitals’ captain in IPL 2023 when Rishabh Pant was not available due to his car accident. However, he is no longer captain of the side and is also expected to be released ahead of the mega auctions.
