Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri was relieved as his side claimed a 2-1 victory at Malmo in the Europa League last-32 first leg to ease some of the pressure on beleaguered coach Sarri.

After watching his side crumble in a 6-0 defeat at Premier League rival Manchester City on Sunday, Sarri was looking for a response in Malmo.

"I am happy with the confidence, it wasn't easy to play with this confidence after the last match."

"In the last period we have had the problem of the up and down. Up and down, up and down because 4-0 (defeat to Bournemouth), 5-0 for us (win versus Huddersfield Town), 6-0 (defeat to Manchester City)," said Maurizio Sarri.

"We need to have continuity, consistency I think in the mental condition (in order) to be able to approach every match with the same level of determination. With the same level of application, with the same level of attention," Sarri said as he hopes this win can help the Blues find consistency.

"We need consistency to approach every match in the same way. It's not easy but we have to try," he said.

Chelsea had taken a 2-0 lead before the hour mark in the first leg but a quick Malmo counter-attack 10 minutes from time allowed the Swedish side to go into the return leg with a glimmer of hope.

"If we concede a goal like this to a team like Manchester City or United or Tottenham, then you risk conceding three goals in 10 minutes," Sarri told reporters.

Sarri named a strong team, although he did leave Gonzalo Higuain and Eden Hazard on the bench.
