Lieutenant General Asim Munir has been appointed the new Director General of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), news agency ANI reported.
According to Pakistani media, Munir's elevation was long speculated after the news of DG ISI Lt Gen Naveed Mukhtar's retirement started doing the rounds.
Munir's previous appointment was as DG Military Intelligence, Pakistan's Dawn reported. He has also served as commander of the Force Command Northern Areas.
General Munir's appointment came after Lt General Naveed Mukhtar, and four other three-star Generals, retired on October 1.
According to reports, General Qamar Bajwa approved General Munir's promotion last Monday.
Traditionally, the coveted slot of DG ISI, considered the most powerful after the army chief’s post, goes to a three-star General with a considerable experience in intelligence agencies.
