Even as the military led by Field Marshal Asim Munir appears to be tightening its grip on one of Pakistan's most volatile provinces, a disturbing statistic emerged, showing that the South Asian nation ranks poorly on the UNDP 2026 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). While Pakistan has claimed that over 7,000 persons have been traced, over 1,000 of them are detained in illegal internment centres, whereas 740 others are in jail. Last month, UN experts expressed concern over the enforced disappearance and extrajudicial killing of Balochistan-based student Imran Ali. They said, and I am quoting them: "Any deprivation of liberty followed by the authorities’ refusal to acknowledge the detention or by the concealment of the fate or whereabouts of that person is an enforced disappearance." Despite Asim Munir having unprecedented control over Pakistan's armed forces, the internal security situation is deteriorating. Balochistan continues to be on the boil, with the Balochistan Liberation Army claiming to have killed 52 Pakistani army personnel in a fresh offensive. BLA stated that these killings took place in 28 operations in the first seven days of September, and also resulting in injuries to multiple personnel. It also claimed to have seized vehicles, a large quantity of weapons and military equipment from Pak security forces. The outfit added that it shot dead an agent of Pakistan's military intelligence in Quetta for carrying out espionage for Munir's forces. As of now, Pakistan is yet to respond to this claim. BLA's assertion comes a day after Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti held a meeting with Pakistan's National Counter Terrorism Authority chief Major General Faisal Naseer. They discussed measures against terrorism, intelligence coordination and the overall law and order situation. The report attributes this to intensified checks and curbs on people's movement by Pak security forces. It claimed that authorities have significantly increased the number of checkpoints with people being stopped after almost every kilometre. It has also been alleged that there is constant drone surveillance over homes, which has made it difficult for locals to remain in the area. While Munir's forces are unable to contain the growing attacks by the BLA, they are focusing on suppressing voice of civilians. On one hand, prominent human rights activists like Mahrang Baloch have been jailed, and on the other hand, Pakistan conducted aerial strikes on its own soil in August. This resulted in death of at least 30 innocent Baloch civilians. Baloch rebels have staged a number of attacks this year. Pakistan seeks a peacemaker role in the Iran conflict, but military action and civilian deaths in Afghanistan raise questions over Islamabad’s credibility

The Verdict: Peace for Iran, pressure on Afghanistan: Pakistan’s contradictory diplomacy

Pakistan’s military has ruled from behind the curtain for decades. But under Field Marshal Asim Munir, that curtain is disappearing, and the backlash is growing. For nearly eight decades, Pakistan’s military has been more than an army. It has been the institution that could make governments, break governments, and, at times, become the government. But something is changing. The aura of untouchability is being challenged, and increasingly, the voices doing it are coming from within Pakistan itself. Maulana Fazlur Rehman, one of Pakistan’s most influential religious-political figures, has openly challenged Asim Munir, telling the army chief that if he wants to do politics, he should take off his uniform and face the voters. And just this week, Fazlur Rehman invoked the trauma of 1971, warning against repeating the mistakes that preceded the breakup of Pakistan. That is significant. Because Pakistan has seen this story before. Ayub Khan seized power. Yahya Khan inherited military rule, and presided over the catastrophe of 1971 and the creation of Bangladesh. Zia-ul-Haq turned another coup into more than a decade of military dictatorship. And Pervez Musharraf once again brought the army directly into politics after his 1999 coup. Different generals. Different eras. But the same fundamental problem: when the military stops protecting the state and starts defining the state. Today, Asim Munir occupies an extraordinary position. Constitutional changes have made him Chief of Defence Forces, placing the army, navy and air force under a unified command. New legislation has further expanded his authority over military operations and senior personnel. Critics say Pakistan is moving closer to a system where military power is no longer simply influential, it is constitutionally entrenched. And that is precisely why the backlash matters. From political opposition to regional grievances, challenges are emerging against an establishment that has spent decades presenting itself as the ultimate guardian of Pakistan. The irony is difficult to ignore.Pakistan has long portrayed India as its existential enemy. Yet India, despite its own enormous political, ethnic and security challenges, has maintained civilian political supremacy over its armed forces. https://www.wionews.com/videos/is-pakistan-s-military-aura-finally-cracking-1787676968788/embed For many Pakistanis, that contrast raises an uncomfortable question: If the “enemy state” can preserve its constitutional order without generals ruling the country, why must Pakistan repeatedly return to military dominance? Perhaps this is why the current moment matters beyond Asim Munir himself. Because the real battle is not simply between one General and his critics. It is over whether Pakistan can finally separate the power of the military from the identity of the nation. So, the verdict: Asim Munir may command Pakistan’s most powerful institution. He may have more formal authority than any recent army chief. But history offers a warning: Generals can command soldiers. They can influence governments. They can even rewrite institutions. What they cannot manufacture indefinitely is public consent. And if Pakistan’s most powerful voices are finally beginning to challenge the uniform, the real question is no longer whether Munir controls Pakistan. It is how long Pakistan will allow the uniform to define it. Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. Pakistan’s military power faces growing backlash as Asim Munir expands his authority, raising questions about civilian rule, democracy, and the country’s future

The Verdict | When generals rule: Why Asim Munir’s rise has Pakistan asking hard questions

The debate has intensified after senior politician Maulana Fazlur Rehman publicly criticized Army Chief Asim Munir, invoking Pakistan's 1971 defeat and questioning the military's claims of strength. His remarks reflect a rare and increasingly open challenge to the army's public image. The controversy comes amid political polarization, economic pressures and growing scrutiny of the military's role in national affairs

The sugar mill management also called for an impartial inquiry to determine the circumstances behind the closure and fix responsibility for any alleged irregularities. “Order an independent inquiry into the conduct of Mr. Amjad Hafeez and Mr. Nadeem Nasir, which has not remained confined to administrative overreach but has resulted in the deliberate annihilation of a functioning and a compliant industrial enterprise,” the letter further reads. Pakistan’s new military law gives Asim Munir sweeping powers; he can now hire, fire, retire forces

Even as Pakistan's pile of troubles keeps getting taller from severe inflation to the massive security turmoil, and multiple other issues, it appears that the Asim Munir-led hybrid regime is living in a parallel universe. Although British Raj ended in 1947, the colonial-era hangover still persists. Take a look at these visuals from an Independence Day parade held in Islamabad. Two officials, capital development authority chairman Sohail Ashraf and Islamabad Inspector General of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi arrived at the event in a horse-drawn buggy. While the attendees were reportedly prompted to applaud the officials, no one clapped. Given that only the President of Pakistan usually rides in a buggy on special occasions, people on social media came down heavily on these bureaucrats for perpetuating a colonial-era tradition while preaching austerity. From journalists to key political figures, the Shehbaz Sharif-led government came in for scathing criticism. Shireen Mazari, who served as the human rights minister during Imran Khan's tenure as PM asserted that it was unbelievably stupid to try and revive such colonial practices. Ex-Sindh governor Mohammad Zubair compared this VIP culture with Norway's foreign minister who was seen handling his own luggage during his recent official visit to Pakistan. The criticism was so intense that Pakistan's interior minister Mohsin Naqvi issued a clarification. While refusing to condemn the VIP culture, Naqvi claimed that the bureaucrats were not at fault. He said and I am quoting him, “The chief guest and I were delayed due to the president's meeting with the Prime Minister." While the buggy was arranged for the chief guest, who is believed to be national assembly speaker Ayaz Sadiq, the delay in his arrival led to a change in plans. Naqvi revealed that the bureaucrats used the buggy on his direct instructions. However, this explanation left a key question unanswered-Why were public funds and resources used to arrange a horse buggy in the first place? Why couldn't the bureaucrats have used normal vehicles to start the event? Naqvi's clarification also ignored broader concerns about elite privilege at a time when Pakistan is going through turmoil. Now, this is not the first time when Naqvi's ego and insistence on protocol has come to the fore. After winning the Asia Cup in September last year, the Indian cricket team refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi who also serves as the President of the Asian Cricket Council amid diplomatic tensions with Pakistan. Instead of handing over the trophy to India, through other means, Pakistan's interior minister took it away and locked it in the ACC headquarters in Dubai. Meanwhile, hundreds of people took part in nationwide protests and marches organised by Jamaat-e-Islami with petrol price soaring to over 325 Pakistani rupees per litre. Raising concerns over rising fuel prices and high taxes, the protesters urged the government to announce relief measures for citizens struggling with the cost of living. With Pakistan's ruling class adopting a tone-deaf approach and unwilling to effectively engage with people's concerns, it seems that the internal dissatisfaction is only poised to grow.

Even as Pakistan is desperately trying to project its military strength on a global stage, the ground reality is stark. The Baloch Liberation Army has claimed to have killed 32 Pak army soldiers in August itself. Now, Pakistan army chief Asim Munir's forces have been accused of bombing their own backyard of Balochistan. Key human rights activist Mir Yar Baloch, who claims to represent 'The Republic of Balochistan,' stated that the air strikes were carried out by F-16 fighter jets in the Surab region.According to him, at least 30 innocent Baloch civilians, including women and children were killed in Pakistan's attack, whereas dozens others were left injured. Amid this, he appealed to the Baloch people to mark Pakistan's Independence Day on August 14 as 'Black Day' by hoisting black flags at their homes and wearing black armbands. However, Pakistan had a very different version to offer. According to the country's military, 8 militants died in Surab after the premature detonation of a bomb which they were preparing. Pakistan's operation came a day after BLA claimed to have killed 32 military personnel from August one to eight. Its attacks reportedly targeted Pakistani military convoys, armoured vehicles, camps, police posts, bridges and railway infrastructure. It also claimed that several military vehicles were destroyed. This is not all. Balochistan's energy sector is also under the radar. A powerful blast damaged an 18-inch gas pipeline in Balochistan's Bolan area. Huge flames were reportedly visible from a distance following the explosion. This left many areas of Balochistan such as Quetta, Mastung, Kalat and Ziarat without gas supply. In another reflection of the deteriorating law and order in Balochistan, seven miners working for a private copper mining firm in Chagai district were kidnapped by unidentified armed men.The abductors also took away vehicles and solar panels. Pakistan has long struggled to contain activities of the Baloch rebels, which are seeking independence of Balochistan from the country. In July, gunmen killed nine police officers in an attack on a checkpost at the Mangi Dam project in Balochistan. Earlier in May, over 30 people were killed after a suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden car into a train in Quetta, which was carrying Pakistani security personnel and their families. The worsening security situation in Balochistan is also evident from hard data. According to the South Asia Terrorism portal, this province has already witnessed 451 incidents of killing in 2026 so far. 321 civilians and 584 security personnel have lost their lives. On the other hand, over 770 militants have been killed. With turmoil growing in Khyber Pakthunkhwa as well as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, a key question arises. Is the Munir-led hybrid regime in Pakistan even in a realistic position to provide security to other countries when it is unable to manage the chaos within?

Human rights activist Mir Yar Baloch, who claims to represent 'The Republic of Balochistan,' said that the air strikes were carried out by F-16 fighter jets in the Surab region. At least 30 innocent Balochs, including women and children, were killed in Pakistan's attack.

As the impasse over the US-Iran war continues, Pakistan’s desperate attempt to showcase its relevance also continues. At a time when his country is in dire need of foreign investments and energy supplies, Pak army chief Asim Munir is trying to create what is perceived as a new military alliance of Muslim-majority nations. This process gained momentum last year, when Pakistan and Saudi Arabia inked a strategic mutual defence agreement in September. The two countries pledged that any attack on either nation would be treated as an act of aggression against both. Amid the risk of getting embroiled in the West Asia war, Pakistani army chief Asim Munir deployed thousands of troops, fighter jets, and air defence systems to Saudi Arabia. While Pakistan has already signed a defence deal with Kuwait, it is also exploring defence pacts with Qatar and Turkiye. Now, the defence agreement with Kuwait has come under scrutiny. While both nations signed the deal in 2023 itself, Kuwait ratified it only a day earlier. The reason for this prolonged delay remains a mystery. As per reports, the pact establishes a framework for cooperation between Pakistani and Kuwaiti armed forces in areas such as training, intelligence sharing, logistics, and military manufacturing. A joint military committee will reportedly oversee this pact, which shall remain in place for five years. https://www.wionews.com/videos/pak-eyes-defence-pact-with-qatar-turkiye-1785173237509/embed This comes at a time when Kuwait’s infrastructure has borne the brunt of Iran’s retaliation during the ongoing West Asia war. It has been grappling with a barrage of Iranian missiles and drones as well as attacks on US bases and desalination plants. As per Reuters, Pakistan has been negotiating an expanded defence agreement with Kuwait in exchange for energy cooperation and investment. Kuwait is reportedly seeking the deployment of Pakistani forces on its soil, akin to the Saudi Arabia pact. Reuters also claimed that Bahrain is interested in a similar agreement, whereas Jordan has expressed interest in a weapons and training deal with Pakistan. Now, in January this year, Pakistan’s federal minister for defence production, Raza Hayat Harraj, revealed that Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye are exploring a joint defence pact. But a final consensus is yet to emerge. In May, Pakistan’s defence minister Khawaja Asif went a step ahead.
