Jailed Ex-PM Slams Army Chief Asim Munir Over 'Hard State' Vision

Ex-PM Imran Khan Criticises Army Chief For Undermining Constitutional Rule

Pakistani Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has issued fresh threats against India. While Pakistan itself was raining bombs on Afghan civilians, Munir doubled down on anti-India nuclear rhetoric, claiming Islamabad's expanding military capabilities could "shatter the misconceived immunity of India's geographical warspace."

India-Pak rift: Munir rakes up nuclear threat again amid internal turmoil

There is a renewed, though possibly unsustainable, sense of belligerence in the Pakistani establishment against India, as it's possibly emboldened by recent perceived closeness to the US President Donald Trump's administration. Its defence minister has just said the possibility of war with India is 'real' , and both politicians and military officials of Pakistan have been exuding a strange level of confidence, despite the destruction Pakistan faced during Operation Sindoor, India's military response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Both the political elite and military establishment have turned up a notch their hostile rhetoric toward India, almost always hinting at renewed conflict. The tone, increasingly bellicose and defiant, suggests Islamabad is gambling on external backing—particularly from Trump-era US alignments—to bolster its posture.
'Risks are real': The rhetoric of provocation from Pakistan
The latest in this is the Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif's blunt remarks that “the possibility of war with India is real and cannot be dismissed.” In comments reported on Wednesday (Sep 8), he said Pakistan is ready and would “do better than before”, if a conflict erupts with India. This comes close on the heels of his words that India would be “buried under the wreckage of its warplanes”. Those comments came after Indian Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi warned that Pakistan would be “erased from the world map” if it continued to support terrorism.
Pakistan's threat to strike Indian infrastructure
Asif was specific in his remarks, hinting that in the event of war, Pakistan would strike Indian infrastructure built on the Indus River. This was interpreted as Pakistan possibly considering Indian actions on hydrological projects or dams as acts of aggression. “If they attempt to build any kind of structure, we will strike it,” he said, equating water control to an existential conflict for Pakistan. For context, India has put the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance since the Pahalgam attack.
Is Pakistan reinforcing military presence?
Asif has repeatedly warned of an “imminent Indian incursion”. He said earlier that Pakistan has reinforced its forces and strategic decisions had been made accordingly. This was interpreted as troop and logistics movements near the border, but Asif partially backtracked, saying his words had been misinterpreted, even though he still insisted that tensions remained high. Also read: Pakistan to get advanced US air-to-air missiles by 2030? The optics was unmissable in a recent Oval Office meeting between Trump and Gen Munir, with PM Sharif in tow. The picture of Munir gifting Trump what appeared to be rare earths or critical minerals went viral. Adversarial posturing against India would help the Sharif regime to divert attention by stoking Pakistani nationalism, to distract the public from internal dissent, economic stress, poverty, inflation and persistent governance deficits. Framing the Indus Waters Treaty abeyance as an ‘existential threat’ from India to Pakistan is also a way of gaining local support.

Even without any military build-up, Pakistan establishment is talking up war. Emboldened by perceived Trump support, Pakistani leaders have escalated anti-India rhetoric in recent days, with top leaders threatening war and strikes on Indian infrastructure. Why?

This is emboldening Pakistan to crank up pressure on India, expecting diplomatic cover or acquiescence from Washington. Wide swaths of Pakistani society think of the Sharif-Munir establishment as illegitimate, with the main opposition leader Imran Khan jailed for months.

Why?

I’ll just conclude it by saying that China is not worried about our flirtations or whatever you call it.”Asif was also asked with whom does Pakistan sees its “strategic future,” the US or China, to which he replied, “In the past, even today and in future also China has been a very reliable ally, very reliable provider of arms of all kinds to us. Our Air Force, submarines, and planes. Our submarines are from there. Almost a major portion of our arms are from China, and our defence cooperation is increasing. Comparing the Pakistani army chief to Islamic State terrorist Osama Bin Laden, saying, "Asim Munir is Osama bin Laden in a suit." He slammed Pakistan for behaving like a "rogue state" and said that the country's behaviour was "completely unacceptable". Speaking during an interview, he also slammed US President Donald Trump for "targeting India" over the South Asian nation's trade relations with Russia. He pointed out that Trump's America is a buyer of several strategic minerals, including uranium hexafluoride, from Russia. Lauding Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for standing up against Trump for India's rights, he said this would "be the episode that historians remember where the US truly learnt that you cannot kick India around".
Asim Munir aka ‘Bin Laden in a suit’
Recently, Pakistan's army chief General Asim Munir allegedly threatened that if his country were ever pushed to the brink in a conflict with India, it would "take half the world down" with it. The controversial comments were reportedly made during a private black-tie dinner in Tampa, Florida, hosted for businessman Adnan Asad. Rubin suggested that for his inciting comment the Pakistani army chief should be declared persona non grata and should be banned from receiving US visas. Raising alarm at the lack of immediate response from US officials present at the event, he said, "Within 30 minutes of when Asim Munir made those comments, he should have been ushered out, taken to Tampa International Airport, and flown out of the United States." He noted that “Americans look at terrorism through the lens of grievance” and explained that "they don't understand the ideological underpinnings of many terrorists… Asim Munir is Osama bin Laden in a suit."
Pakistan's nuclear rhetoric 'completely unacceptable'
Calling Pakistan's behaviour "completely unacceptable", the former Pentagon official and Middle East analyst compared Munir's threat to statements previously made by ISIS and Osama bin Laden. "Pakistan is raising questions in many people's minds about whether it can fulfil the responsibilities of being a state," he said, adding, "The Field Marshal's rhetoric is reminiscent of what we've heard from the Islamic State." The prominent analyst also called for immediate diplomatic consequences against Pakistan. Rubin suggested that Islamabad should be stripped of its status as a major non-NATO ally and potentially designated as a state sponsor of terrorism. The ex-Pentagon official then suggested that the international community should consider what he called "managed decline" for Pakistan. This, he said, could potentially include recognising regions like Balochistan if they break away. He also pitched the idea of a military intervention to secure Pakistan's nuclear arsenal. "It's coming near time when, in a future administration, other SEAL teams should enter Pakistan to secure its nuclear weapons because the alternative is simply too great to bear," he said.
