A brief disruption in the services at the Delhi airport was seen in the afternoon hours on Monday (June 17) following a power outage. The electricity outage took place at around 2pm local time and affected operations related to baggage acceptance, videos of which are circulating on social media platforms.
The disruption at the airport in India's national capital was caused by a voltage spike detected at the Main Receiving Sub-station (MRSS), attributed to a tripped 765KV line from the Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) grid, as per a Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) spokesperson.
"This voltage imbalance from the Delhi Transco Limited (DTL) grid briefly impacted all IGI terminals, affecting baggage acceptance and e-gates,” the statement added.
In response, the airport swiftly activated its backup power system, transitioning all terminals to generator load to ensure the continuity of essential services.
"To maintain essential services, we proactively switched all terminals to DG (Distributed Generation) load. The power backup system, installed by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), was operationalised within a few minutes, and all backup procedures were initiated to facilitate passengers at all touchpoints," the spokesperson stated.
By 3:00pm, the grid voltage stabilised, allowing a seamless transition back to the DTL grid load.
The flight operations remained unaffected throughout the incident, as per reports.
The power outage briefly affected air conditioners in the terminals, as per reports.
Some passengers took to social media to express their frustration over the inconvenience caused.
"T3 terminal delhi airport totally choked due to power failure! No counter, No digi yatra, nothing functioning. This is shocking," one passenger wrote on X.
