Army chief General Bipin Rawat on Thursday briefed defence minister Rajnath Singh on the present situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Army chief told the defence minister that the overall situation is under control and the Armed forces are on high alert and closely monitoring the situation, reported news agency ANI.

On Wednesday, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval and Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik reviewed the security situation in the valley.

They asked the authorities to ensure the safety of the general public and take stock of their requirements and address them swiftly,

Parliament on Tuesday approved a resolution abrogating special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution and a bill for splitting the state into two Union Territories - Jammu and Kashmir and Ladhak.

The repeal of Article 370 has also led to abrogation of Article 35A related to "permanent residents".

Jammu and Kashmir has been on lockdown since Sunday and security forces are on maximum alert to "pre-empt" and "prevent" any breach of security.
