International Yoga Day 2024: Modi leads celebrations, says world seeing new Yoga economy going forward

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (June 21) led celebrations for the International Day of Yoga 2024 in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar. This was the first trip to Kashmir that Prime Minister Modi made sinceassuming office for a third consecutive term. On Friday, Modi led the Yoga session at theSher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar.

Addressing the event, Modi said that in the last decade,the expansion of Yoga has changed the perception related to it. "Today, the world is seeing a new Yoga economy going forward. In India, from Rishikesh and Kashi to Kerala, a new connect of Yoga tourism is being seen," the prime minister said.

"Tourists from across the world are coming to India because they want to learn authentic Yoga in India...People are even keeping personal Yoga trainers for their fitness...All of these have created new opportunities for the youth, new employment opportunities for youth," he added.

'Number of people doing Yoga continuously increasing'

Modi pointed out that the number of peopledoing yoga was continuouslyincreasing in the world. "Wherever I go and whoever (global leaders) I meet, they ask me about yoga with curiosity. Yoga is becoming a part of daily life,” he added.

"The world is looking at Yoga as a powerful agent of global good. Yoga helps us live in the present moment without the baggage of the past. It connects us with ourselves,” the PM also said.

The theme this year

The theme for this year'sInternational Day of Yoga is "Yoga for Self and Society." Talking about the theme, Modi said, "Yoga helps us realise that our welfare is related to the welfare of the world around us. When we are peaceful within, we can also make a positive impacton the world."

"Astronauts are also being trained in yoga and meditation. Yoga is also being used in prisons to spread positive thoughts among the inmates," he added.
