Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis debuted at Cannes Film Festival on May 16. The much-awaited film featuring a handsome star cast including Adam Driver, Sydney Sweeney, Nathalie Emmanuel and Aubrey Plaza and others got a 7-minute standing ovation.
Megalopolis is iconic in many ways since the film has been in the making for decades now. The dystopian epic is directed by 85-year-old Francis Ford Coppola. The director bowed as the lights came up in the Grand Theatre Lumiere. He was congratulated by Richard Gere and got a hug from Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux as the ovation carried on.
Speaking to an excited audience, Francis Ford Coppola said, “Thank you all so much — it is impossible to find words how I feel.”
He called the cast of his film as “family” and emphasised on the movie’s end message: “We should pledge allegiance to our families…that children should inherit a beautiful world from us.”
Megalopolis has been in the making for 13 years. But people waited because everyone is familiar with Francis’ commitment to his art. He is the man behind Apocalypse Now and Godfather trilogy. Even before the screening of his film started, the director got a 3-minute-plus standing ovation.
