Zelensky says he 'already invited' India for 2nd peace summit to end war with Russia

Addressing a special UN Security Council (UNSC) session on Tuesday (Sep 24) in New York, UkrainianPresident Volodymyr Zelensky said he had already invitedIndia to join the peace process to end the ongoing war.

Zelensky urged the powerful UN body to prepare for the second peace summit as the war supposedly enters its business end.

"And I invite all of you, all principle nations to join us in this process, all who truly respect the UN Charter. We invite China. We invite Brazil. I have already invited India," said Zelensky.

"We all know what needs to be done if we honestly look at the situation and truly want to stop Russia's war. Most importantly, act together, of course in unity, without creating new and unnecessary divisions of the world into blocks or regional groups," he added.

The first peace summit was held in Switzerland in June and saw the participation of 101 countries while more than 80 countries signed adeclaration endorsing “principles of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all states, including Ukraine".

India stands for peace

India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has actively sought for a peaceful resolution to the war. During his meeting with Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, New Delhi reaffirmed its stance on the issue.

"Met President @ZelenskyyUa in New York. We are committed to implementing the outcomes of my visit to Ukraine last month to strengthen bilateral relations. Reiterated India’s support for early resolution of the conflict in Ukraine and restoration of peace and stability," wrote PM Modi on X (formerly Twitter).

This was the third meeting between the two leaders in little over three months, with Zelensky stating that the two nations were developing their relations and "working together to strengthen cooperations across various fields.

Prior to Monday's meeting, the two leaders had met in Kyiv last month when PM Modi arrived on a historic one-day visit which was the first ever by an Indian PM since the diplomatic relations between the two nations were established in 1992.
