Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat is a win away from scripting history at the 2024 Paris Olympics as she takes the mat on Wednesday (Aug 7) in the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling event. While the moment could be historic for India, attention has turned to the struggles Vinesh faced before making it to the Paris Olympics. Atthe center of a huge tussle with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) in 2023 and its then chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Vinesh’s uncle Mahavir has now taken the center stage and slammed the same authorities who once made her suffer.
“She will win the gold medal. I trust her and her hard work. This victory is a slap on the faces of those who talked bad about her,” Mahavir told PTI on Tuesday after Vinesh’s victory in Paris 2024.
Vinesh was unsuccessful in her fight against then-WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh last year to launch a probe of sexual assault on young female wrestlers. She along with several fellow Olympic medallists, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia protested against the WFI chief, who was also a sitting Member of Parliament from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. The wrestlers also protested againstthe monopoly ofBrij Bhushan Singh and his core group in the WFI.
One year after the chaos, Vinesh will now join both Sakshi and Bajrang as Olympic medallists when she steps on the Paris podium with either silver or gold medal.
While no one expected Vinesh to proceed from the R16 bout, she upset the odds with a 3-2 victory over defending Olympic champion Yui Susaki, snapping her 82-match winning streak in the process. Vineshlater wenton to defeat Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 7-5 in the quarter-finals followed by a clincal 5-0 victory over Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman. She will now face United States’ Sarah Hildebrandt in the final with an eye on a historic gold medal in the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling.
