FIFA World Cup 2026, held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico earlier this year, faced criticism for multiple reasons including accommodation in host cities, scheduling, ticket prices, and more. During the tournament, one of the major controversies which erupted was allowing US player Folarin Balogun to play in the match against Belgium in the Round of 16 despite getting a red card in the previous match against Bosnia. Later on, the player, Lionel Mpasi – a goalkeeper – played in the main tournament as well, including in the Round of 32 against England. The goalie was ineligible because of being born in France, playing there at the youth level, and never changing nationalities officially. Also Read - Ronaldo tells why he left team camp, says would be available post 'suspension'
How was the case reported to FIFA?
Nigeria, who played against DRC in November in the qualifiers, had reported the issue to FIFA. India’s T20I captain Shreyas Iyer scored his maiden hundred in this format on Tuesday evening in Lucknow, guiding the hosts to a comfortable eight-wicket win over West Indies in the series opener. Australia suffered a blow to their preparations for the Test series against South Africa after losing key all-rounder Cameron Green for the series opener in Durban starting Friday (Oct 9). Green suffered an abdominal strain while batting during the third ODI in Potchefstroom. Even if Green recovers at some point in the series, he will only play as a batter. During the third and final ODI, Corbin Bosch hit Green in the stomach, after which the lanky all-rounder smashed him for a six before being dismissed on the next ball. Despite the blow, there is optimism within the Australian medical camp, which expects Green to feature in the second and third Tests in Gqeberha or Cape Town, respectively. "He's (Green) progressing pretty well, all things considered," Australia head coach Andrew McDonald said ahead of the team's first full training session at Kingsmead, venue for the first Test. "He's still here for a reason, so there is some light at the end of the tunnel. It'll just be a matter of going through the rehab. "He's got a pretty demanding week this week as he reintroduces a few activities, and you'll see that probably play out in the net situation [and] during lunchtime, in and around the game. It's a bit of an unknown, but there's still optimism that he will take part in the series at some point,” he said. Also read| SA vs AUS 2026: South Africa to take call on Rabada’s availability for first Test ‘as late as possible’ Speaking on Green’s bowling chances during the series, McDonald said, “That's highly unlikely. But, I mean, what a great story. He's come back in, he's had a full pre-season, he's looking fit and strong [and he] peels off 100 in the first [one-day] game. Anyone that's been on the radar or there or thereabouts, they don't sort of drop off automatically,” McDonald said Moreover, McDonald also confirmed that Travis Head is ‘likely’ to continue in his role as the Test opener, with Matt Renshaw set to be his partner. India is among seven countries that want to host the 2036 Summer Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed in a public statement on Tuesday (Oct. 6). Besides India, Qatar and South Africa are also among the confirmed bidders, alongside Germany, Hungary, Turkey, and South Korea. Meanwhile, other countries have until October 31, 2026, to declare their interest in hosting the Olympic Games 10 years later. In March 2027, the IOC Executive Board will draw up a shortlist of the interested countries, which will then enter dialogue with the Olympic body. The governing body said that the host of the 2036 Olympic Games will be assessed on several factors, including funding, political and public support. "Wherever the Games take place, one thing must never change: athletes have to be at the heart of everything we do," IOC President Kirsty Coventry said in a statement. The IOC has confirmed India is among seven nations bidding to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, with Ahmedabad lined up as the proposed host city.

"That is why, for every future host, delivering the best possible experience for the athletes must always be the starting point," the Zimbabwean former swimmer added. South Africa will not rush ace seamer Kagiso Rabada’s return to the Test side. Batting coach Ashwell Prince said the selectors and management will decide on his participation in the series opener against Australia ‘as late as possible’. India will take on the West Indies in the first of five T20Is on Tuesday (Oct. 6) and the thing to watch will be the bowlers. India have rested ace bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the series and named Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav in the squad. Bumrah was recently part of the Asian Games 2026, in which India won gold, and is expected to play in the upcoming New Zealand tour next. India bowling coach Morne Morkel, meanwhile, is excited to see how Mayank and Prince - who made their name with pace in the Indian Premier League (IPL) - take on this opportunity.
Morkel wants bowlers like Prince, Mayank in India team
India are three-time T20 World Cup champions with the last two trophies coming back-to-back in 2024 and 2026. Russia's Daniil Medvedev stunned the tennis world after being disqualified from the China Open semi-finals on Monday (Oct. 5) in his match against Novak Djokovic. Medvedev was disqualified after accidentally hitting a spectator with the ball in the third set, three points away from a loss. The spectator was hit around the left eye and left the area after being struck by the ball. After his disqualification, Djokovic, who expressed shock at the incident, advanced to his 102nd tour-level final. Medvedev, meanwhile, has apologized for his actions. This is, however, not the first time Medvedev has been fined for his on-court behavior.
Medvedev reveals reason behind striking ball which hit spectator at China Open
The Russian was behind 7-5, 5-3 and had just lost a point when the incident happened. The ball went past him, hit the court wall, and Medvedev hit it. The ball went on to hit a spectator near the left eye in the arena, and everybody was left stunned. Have a look at the video below:

After the match, Medvedev was asked about the incident by reporters, and he said: "Terribly sorry to the spectator, first of all. I'm trying to get in touch with him, if he wants it. Hopefully I can apologize in person. I just hope he's OK. That's the most important thing. I just really care about him right now. It was 100 percent an accident. You can see I didn't hit the ball in anger. I do a lot of bad things, but usually ball abuse is not my thing.""The ball was bouncing back, so I tried to just hit it anywhere so it doesn't go out of the court. When I saw the result, I felt horrible. Hopefully I can meet him and make up for it somehow," he explained. Also Read - UEFA Nations League: France come from behind to thrash Belgium; Italy continue resurgenceDjokovic, who was similarly disqualified from the US Open in 2020 for hitting a line judge with a ball, said: "I was shocked. With question marks being raised about Ajit Agarkar’s future as the head of the men’s selection committee, former Indian spinner and interim chief selector Pragyan Ojha will chair the meeting for the forthcoming New Zealand tour. The selectors postponed the squad announcement meeting on Monday (Oct 5) amid seamer Prasidh Krishna’s pending fitness report, but will likely announce T20I, ODI, Test and ‘A’ squads in the next 48 hours. A Times of India (TOI) report claims that with ‘A’ matches, starting on October 24, overlapping with the five T20Is, beginning October 22, the selection conundrum has gripped the Ojha-led committee. Even though the selectors will not dilute the two squads, handing red-ball exposure to the Test regulars remains at the top of their agenda during the squad announcement meeting. Also read| Root 'Can', 'Tough' for Kohli: Dinesh Karthik's verdict on passing Sachin Tendulkar A few India A fast bowlers might stay back to assist the Test team with preparations. Irani Cup hero Mukesh Kumar, who picked up eight wickets in Rest of India's victory over Ranji Trophy champions Jammu & Kashmir, is back on the selectors’ radar, with the committee set to hand him an India-A call-up. His Bengal and India bowling partner, Akash Deep, is also back in the reckoning for a spot in the Test squad, with the selectors deliberating on ace seamer Jasprit Bumrah’s readiness. The management wants him to increase his workload before joining the India squad for two Tests against New Zealand.
Ishan Kishan set for Test call-up
A T20I mainstay and a formidable One-Day batter, Ishan Kishan, could be back in the Test side for the New Zealand series, per the report. The selectors are said to have initiated plans to keep Kishan in line for a Test recall. While they wanted to pick him for the ‘A’ games, the overlap of the white-ball series could force them to look towards Dhruv Jurel and Kumar Kushagra. Rishabh Pant is also expected to complete his preparations for the Test series by featuring in at least one ‘A’ game. Besides Pant, other Test regulars including Devdutt Padikkal, Sai Sudharsan and even KL Rahul are expected to feature in one ‘A’ match. Since KL Rahul is also a key member of the ODI setup, he could feature in only the first ‘A’ match, before linking up with the One-Day squad in Auckland.
Reddy Ahead of Kuldeep
Unlike how India picked several spinners for their concluded Test tour of Sri Lanka, where Manav Suthar earned big praise for his standout performance, he could potentially miss out on the Test squad, alongside Kuldeep Yadav. With more focus on batters and batting all-rounders, Nitish Kumar Reddy could also be back playing Test cricket. Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja would also retain his place in the Test squad.
Fast Bowlers in Mix
Barring Bumrah, who is a sure starter, India would have options to pick from an army of pacers, including Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar and Akash Deep. In case of an injury to any of the pacers, the door could be open for either Auqib Nabi or Mukesh Kumar.

Pragyan Ojha will chair the selection meeting for the New Zealand series as India prepares to announce T20I, ODI, Test, and 'A' squads shortly.

Ishan Kishan set for Test call-up A T20I mainstay and a formidable One-Day batter, Ishan Kishan, could be back in the Test side for the New Zealand series, per the report. Reddy Ahead of Kuldeep Unlike how India picked several spinners for their concluded Test tour of Sri Lanka, where Manav Suthar earned big praise for his standout performance, he could potentially miss out on the Test squad, alongside Kuldeep Yadav. With more focus on batters and batting all-rounders, Nitish Kumar Reddy could also be back playing Test cricket. Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja would also retain his place in the Test squad. Fast Bowlers in Mix Barring Bumrah, who is a sure starter, India would have options to pick from an army of pacers, including Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar and Akash Deep. In case of an injury to any of the pacers, the door could be open for either Auqib Nabi or Mukesh Kumar.

Pragyan Ojha will chair the selection meeting for the New Zealand series as India prepares to announce T20I, ODI, Test, and 'A' squads shortly.
