Former India cricket team captain and legendary batter Sourav Ganguly has faced huge backlash from the netizens after his latest social media post over the unfortunate Kolkata-rape murder incident on Monday (Aug 19). Ganguly, who hails from Kolkata where the unfortunate incident took place wherea 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped before being brutally murdered at the RG Kar Medical College. Ganguly who had termed the situation as a “stray incident” last Sunday was slammed by the netizens after he changed his social media profile picture to black colour in solidarity with the victim.

Ganguly slammed by netizens

On Monday, Ganguly changed his profile picture to a black colour theme which prompted a few X users (previously Twitter) to take a jibe at the legendary cricketer. Ganguly captioned his post as ‘New Profile Pic’ but was not far from facing criticism for his earlier comments. One of the X-handle users questioned his solidarity act by mentioning his “stray incident” comment last Sunday. Another user suggested Ganguly speak on the entire issue rather than make token comments.

While he was on the receiving end of the criticism on the internet, few also applauded Ganguly’s changed stance.

Kolkata rape-murder case

In a barbaric incidentin West Bengal’sKolkata on the evening of Thursday (Aug 8), a 31-year-old trainee doctor was murdered after being brutallyraped by the accused Sanjoy Roy at the RG Kar Medical College. The body was found in the seminar hall on the consequent day which sparkedoutrage in the country. A nationwide protest was seen in solidarity with the victim while calls for harsh punishments were called for the accused.

During the ongoing protest, Ganguly on Sunday (Aug 11) termed the situation as a “stray incident” inviting sharp criticismfrom people. He justified his stancelater and on Monday changed his profile picture.

"I said that last Sunday, I don't know how it was construed or interpreted. I have said it earlier also, it's a terrible thing. Now the CBI, police are investigating the matter. It's very shameful what has happened," Ganguly had said to reporters.

"The punishment should be such that no one dares to commit such crime again in their life. That is important. Punishment has to be severe," he had added.
