Donald Trump on Monday (Jul 15) officially named Ohio Senator JDVance as his running mate in the US presidential election at the start of the party's national convention in Milwaukee. The announcement comes two days after Trump survived an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote: "As Vice President, JDwill continue to fight for our Constitution, stand with our Troops, and will do everything he can to help me MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN."
Vance was named Trump's running mate hours after the former president secured a major legal victory when a federal judge dismissed one of Trump's criminal prosecutions. Vance was a one-time harsh critic, but later became one of Trump's most loyal supporters in Congress.
US President Joe Biden's campaign dismissed Vance as a "far-right MAGA extremist" as they responded sharply to the announcement.
"Vance is a 2020 election denier, supports a national abortion ban, and voted against IVF access," Biden's team said, further adding that the president said Vance "talks a big game about working people. But now, he and Trump want to raise taxes on middle-class families while pushing more tax cuts for the rich."

The Republican Party convention has been turbocharged by the attempted assassination of Trump which he described as a "very surreal experience". The 78-year-old Trump was hit in the ear by a gunman at a campaign rally on Saturday. The 20-year-old man, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by the Secret Service agents immediately.
One bystander was killed and two more wounded in the attempted assassination. The Secret Service, which is battling criticism it failed to protect Trump from the shooter, said it was "fully prepared" to ensure security at the convention.
Trump is exuding confidence and leading in multiple polls, despite being convicted in his hush-money criminal case in New York. On the other hand, Biden, 81, is facing calls from his own side to quit the race over concerns about his age.
