An Indian Railways employee was crushed to death Saturday (Nov 9) after being trapped between the engine and a coach of the same train in the eastern state of Bihar. The incident took place at Barauni Junction of Begusarai district, resulting in the painful death of 35-year-old Amar Kumar Raut. The man was said to be decoupling the engine of the Lucknow-Barauni Express (Train No: 15204) after its termination at the Barauni Junction at the time of his death.

What happened?

According to reports, when Raut was busy with the decoupling process, the driver of the engine suddenly reversed the engine. This didn’t allow the ill-fated staffer enough time to rush to a safe place and he ended up being crushed to death right on the tracks.

When passengers and onlookers noticed the incident, they flagged it to the driver. The driver then stopped the engine and fled the scene. Meanwhile, passengers alerted local railway police and senior officials at the station.

A video has also emerged on the internet, showing Amar’s body trapped between the two metal walls. A probe has been launched by the local authorities.

Railway officials said an urgent meeting was called of all departments at Barauni Junction to ensure strict adherence to safety protocols.

Meanwhile, netizens condemned the incident and highlighted the poor safety standards at workplaces in India.

“This is Safety level at Workplace. There is no value of common worker,” wrote a user. “He remained stuck like this for about 2 hours. So much to talk about progressed India,” a second user wrote. “Those responsible must be held accountable. Really sad!!” a third commented.

The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, and politician from the Congress party Rahul Gandhi, blamed the Indian Railways for the incident, saying it was a result of "long-standing negligence and neglect".

"This horrific picture and news is the result of long-standing negligence, neglect and deliberate low recruitment by the Indian Railways," Rahul wrote on X.
