A &nbsp;Delhi Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has fined the Indian Railways Rs 25,000 for deficiency in service for providing one blanket to two unrelated travellers. The commission has directed the amount to be paid as compensation and litigation costs to an RAC passenger after he filed a complaint alleging mental harassment and physical inconvenience. President Monika Aggarwal Srivastava and Members Rajender Dhar and Ritu Garodia noted that the government circular in 2009 clearly states that a blanket and bedsheet may be given to RAC passengers because the charges of bedroll are included in the fare. “The Railways provided one blanket to two completely unrelated passengers in violation of the circular dated 23.09.2009. &nbsp;Thereafter, the Railways imposed a Rs 1,000 penalty on the linen contractor, but failed to inform the complainant about the same or provide compensation to the passenger. Even in the reply filed before this Commission, Railways are silent about this penalty,” the July 10 order said. The order added, “Moreover, OP has not placed on record any proof that a separate bedroll was provided to the complainant. &nbsp;Hence, we find OP guilty of deficiency in service and direct OP to pay Rs 20,000 as compensation for mental harassment and physical inconveniences. &nbsp;We also award a cost of Rs 5,000 to be paid towards litigation expenses.” The complainant had booked a ticket from Prayagraj to Delhi on October 25, 2022, for a journey scheduled on October 28, 2022. He explained that he was assigned a shared seat with another passenger under the same RAC ticket. According to his allegations, the attendant provided only a single blanket, one pillow, and two bedsheets to be shared between both passengers throughout the entire trip. He claimed the journey became difficult to manage since the two strangers had to share just one blanket. He further alleged that napkins weren't provided to any passengers, and when he requested a separate blanket and pillow from the attendant, he was told, &nbsp;“This is the rule that for one seat, one blanket, one pillow and 2 bedsheets are only provided.” The man added that he subsequently posted about the issue on Twitter and received a response from Railways Services asking him to share his PNR. After providing all the necessary details to them, the attendant handed him a towel; however, no extra blanket, bed sheet and pillow were provided.&nbsp;Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/one-in-russia-since-4-months-other-20-km-away-did-bihar-police-mistakenly-name-students-in-neet-protest-case-1785379075836">‘One in Russia, another 20 km away’: Students claim they were wrongly named in Bihar NEET protest case</a><h3>How was the complaint proceeded?</h3>Later, he asked the travelling ticket examiner (TTE) to provide the complaint book, but he refused. The complainant also filed an RTI seeking answers but received no response, and sought Rs 20 lakh in compensation. Northern Railways contested the commission's territorial jurisdiction, arguing the matter didn't pertain to Delhi, while maintaining that bedrolls are provided as per standard rules, with extra blankets given based on demand and availability. It stated the dispute was under examination with the concerned NC Railway, Allahabad, and that on-board linen services are contracted out. The commission ruled the complaint fell within its jurisdiction, noting both parties confirmed the complainant shared a berth with a stranger and received only one pillow and blanket. Internal Railways communication revealed a Rs 1,000 penalty was imposed on the linen services contractor, though claims of a separate bedroll being provided were disputed by the complainant. Finding the Railways guilty of service deficiency, the commission awarded Rs 20,000 for mental harassment and inconvenience, plus Rs 5,000 in litigation costs, payable within 60 days with 7 per cent interest thereafter.

This train service ensures a reliable alternative for transporting fresh produce to markets across India.&nbsp;''This has been worked out for some time now. We really did not expect that the work would start so soon. But the work of railway officers here and in Northern Railways played a huge role. Train is the only option where there is no closure. In a first, Indian Railways launches first parcel train from Kashmir to Delhi to aid apple growers

In a landmark move, Indian Railways has launched its first-ever parcel coach train from Budgam district in central Kashmir to New Delhi. This initiative addresses long-standing demands from apple growers, who have faced challenges due to the national highway connecting Srinagar to the rest of India being closed for over two weeks. To empower Kashmir’s apple growers, the Union Railway Minister of India announced the launch of a daily time-tabled parcel train from Budgam in the Kashmir Valley to Adarsh Nagar station in Delhi. The two parcel trains from Budgam will transport fresh apple produce from various districts to multiple states across India, boosting the region’s agricultural economy. ''Empowering Kashmir’s apple growers. With the Jammu-Srinagar line operational, the Kashmir valley has better connectivity. Railways is introducing a daily time-tabled parcel train from Budgam in Kashmir Valley to Adarsh Nagar station in Delhi starting Saturday (September 13). Loading of two parcel vans of apples from Budgam to Delhi is beginning today," said Ashwani Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Railways. In a major policy shift, Indian Railways is preparing to roll out strict baggage regulations across key stations — mirroring the airline model of restricted weight and size.

This change means passengers may soon have to weigh and declare their baggage, and possibly pay extra fees for exceeding limits. The move is aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and passenger convenience, especially in premium trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Vande Bharat.

The Ministry of Railways has installed the first solar panels between railway tracks at Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi. As per the reports, this is the country’s first removable solar panel system placed between railway tracks. Officials say it could become a model for generating renewable power without acquiring additional land. The Ministry of Railways shared this update on X on Monday.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet">🚆 Indian Railways marks a historic first! Banaras Locomotive Works, Varanasi commissioned India’s first 70m removable solar panel system (28 panels, 15KWp) between railway tracks—a step towards green and sustainable rail transport. <a href="https://t.co/BCm2GTjk7O">pic.twitter.com/BCm2GTjk7O</a>&mdash; Ministry of Railways (@RailMinIndia) <a href="https://twitter.com/RailMinIndia/status/1957332886756946250?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 18, 2025</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

&nbsp;<h2>The solar track system&nbsp;</h2>As per the Railway Ministry, the pilot project involves 70 metres of solar panels (28 panels, 15 KWp) placed between tracks inside Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW). These panels are designed to be removable, allowing maintenance, etc., to be easy when needed.&nbsp;Reports says If this model is expanded, it could generate about 3.21 lakh units (kWh) of electricity per kilometre every year. This can be enough to power station operations, signalling, or even feeding into the grid.&nbsp;<h2>Indian Railways’ clean energy push</h2>This solar project is part of Indian Railways’ net-zero emissions target by 2030. Over the past few years, the Railways has commissioned rooftop solar plants at stations and depots and invested in large-scale renewable projects.&nbsp;In another milestone, Western Railway recently commissioned India’s first 2×25 kV electric traction system on the Nagda–Khachrod section of Ratlam Division. The system, powered by two Scott-connected 100 MVA transformers, promises more efficient electricity delivery for trains.&nbsp;<h2>Using Solar Energy in Railways</h2>Rail transport medium is one of India’s largest consumers of electricity and diesel. By using solar energy in underutilised spaces like track gaps, the Railways could cut costs and emissions at the same time. As per the officials&nbsp;The BLW project was developed by local engineers. If scaled across the network, officials believe it can play a big role in meeting India’s renewable energy and climate goals.

Indian Railways on Sunday (Jul 13) announced that CCTV cameras would soon be installed in all passenger coaches. As per a statement by the Ministry of Railways, the CCTV cameras would be put up in around 74,000 coaches in 15,000 locomotives. The move has even received a go-ahead from the Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu. But why are cameras being installed in Indian trains? Won't they compromise on passenger privacy? Or would they help passengers? Here's all we know about Indian Railways' upcoming CCTV camera setup drive.<h2>Why are CCTV cameras being installed in Indian trains?</h2>As per reports, the CCTV cameras are being installed after the positive outcome of the installation of CCTV cameras in passenger coaches. In its press release, the Ministry of Railways said that the move will "significantly improve passenger safety". It added that "miscreants and organised gangs take advantage of gullible passengers" and that with cameras "such incidents will significantly reduce."<h2>What about passenger privacy?</h2>Keeping in mind passenger privacy, the Ministry of Railways said that the CCTV camera would be installed in the "common movement area near the doors." As per reports, every train coach will be covered by four cameras — two each in the entrance way. Meanwhile, each locomotive will have six cameras – one each at the front, rear and on both sides of the locomotive. Additionally, each cab (front and rear) of a loco will be fitted with 1 dome CCTV camera and two desk-mounted microphones.<h2>Best-in-class equipment, AI to be used</h2>Reports suggest that the CCTV cameras will have the latest specifications and will also be STQC certified. At a review meeting attended by the senior officials of the Railway Board on Saturday, Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu said he only wanted the best-in-class equipment. He urged officials to ensure that, if needed, high-quality footage could be accessed even for trains running at 100 km/h-plus speeds and also under low lighting conditions. He also encouraged railway officials to explore the use of AI in collaboration with the IndiaAI mission.

The BCCI, IPL and the Indian Railways pulled off a brave feat of safely bringing all Punjab Kings-Delhi Capitals <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ipl-2025" rel="dofollow">IPL 2025</a>-bound players and staff members, including the crew, back to Delhi from Dharamsala on Friday (May 9). A day after their game at the HPCA stadium came to an unexpected halt for security concerns, causing panic within the camp, the tournament organisers ensured everyone remained safe and was home.
The latest reports also suggest that all players, Indian and overseas, will head home at the earliest amid prevailing cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan.
On Thursday, the start of the PBKS-DC game was delayed by rain and then a wet outfield. Punjab won the toss and elected to bat first, with their openers making light work of Delhi's bowlers. The Indian batting pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh added 122 runs for the first wicket; however, Arya&rsquo;s dismissal on the first ball of the 11th over broke the stand, and with any hopes of the game getting underway.
Though floodlight failure was one of the early reasons behind pausing the game, the IPL chairman asking the fans to vacate the venue ensured the real reason behind it.

Is it possible to cover a five-hour journey in 30 minutes? May be YES! IIT Madras, with support from the Ministry of Railways, has developed a 422-metre-long India's first hyperloop test track. With the help of this, 350 km can be covered in just 30 minutes now.&nbsp;
It further means that once it becomes a reality, you can travel a distance of roughly 300 km from Delhi to Jaipur in less than half an hour.&nbsp;
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw took to X, and wrote, "Government-academia collaboration is driving innovation in futuristic transportation."

"I think the time has come when, after the first two grants of one million dollars each, the third grant of one million dollars will be given to IIT Madras for further developing the hyperloop project," he added.&nbsp;
The railways plan to undertake the first commercial project soon.&nbsp;
The minister further said, "We&rsquo;ll decide on a site which can be used for good commercial transportation of, let&rsquo;s say, some 4,050 kilometres."

<h2>Know about a hyperloop track</h2>
Hyperloop, referred to as the "fifth mode of transport", is a high-speed transportation system for long-distance travel.&nbsp;
It further allows trains to travel at very high speeds via special capsules in vacuum tubes.&nbsp;
"It involves an electromagnetically levitating pod within a vacuum tube, thus eliminating friction and air drag and potentially allowing the pod to reach speeds up to Mach 1.0," according to an official press release.

A Mach is around 761 miles per hour at sea level on a standard day.

Vaishnaw dubbed the project as "Bharat's first Hyperloop test track (410 meters).” The minister in his post hoped that the dream to realise futuristic Hyperloop technology would soon be materialised.

According to a press release, the project is aimed at developing hyperloop technology for high-speed, affordable, reliable, and sustainable transportation. India's Ministry of Railways is&nbsp;developing this project in collaboration with IIT Madras. The inaugural run of the 410-meter Hyperloop test track at the IIT Madras Discovery Campus in Thaiyur achieved a speed of 100 km/h. Future tests will advance on the longer track, aiming to reach speeds of approximately 600 km/h.

Should developments proceed as anticipated, Hyperloop technology has the potential to transform urban mobility, possibly enhancing or complementing India's existing Metro Rail system and transforming the transit framework across the nation.

An Indian Railways employee was crushed to death Saturday (Nov 9) after being trapped between the engine and a coach of the same train in the eastern state of Bihar. The incident took place at Barauni Junction of Begusarai district, resulting in the painful death of 35-year-old Amar Kumar Raut. The man was said to be decoupling the engine of the Lucknow-Barauni Express (Train No: 15204) after its termination at the Barauni Junction at the time of his death.

The minister said that his ministry was coordinating with various railway zones and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to investigate these incidents thoroughly.&nbsp;

"We will take strict action against anyone and everyone behind such illegal activities," he assured, adding that the administration was "working hard to ensure that no such incidents are repeated and that we can track down the offenders."

While the NIA has not formally registered a case related to recent sabotage incidents on railway tracks, an official, as per Indian media reports, indicated that they are informally investigating the matter.&nbsp;

"We look into all railways’ accidents informally and assist local police/other agencies in investigation to probe it from conspiracy angle," the official stated, adding that they are waiting for an official directive from the government to launch a comprehensive investigation.

This comes as earlier on Tuesday (Sep 24), three railway employees were arrested for allegedly&nbsp;carrying&nbsp;out sabotage themselves&nbsp;to get social media fame, promotion, and reward by raising alarm and alerting about&nbsp;it in time while putting several lives at risk.&nbsp;

This heightened vigilance follows multiple alarming incidents where railway drivers encountered dangerous objects on the tracks. For instance, on September 22, a goods train driver spotted a gas cylinder on the track and activated the emergency brakes just in time to avert a disaster.

Similar occurrences included the discovery of a damaged cylinder and other hazardous materials on September 15, just before the Kalindi Express arrived in Kanpur.

Additionally, on September 21, unidentified individuals removed a fishplate and key from a track in Uttar Pradesh, prompting&nbsp;alarm.&nbsp;In a separate incident, on Sunday, nine metal rods were found on the Bhatinda-Delhi route at around 3 am.

India: Three railway staffers detained for sabotage plot, wanted to get facilitation

In connection with the land-for-job fraud case, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday (Aug 6) filed a supplementary chargesheet naming Lalu Prasad Yadav, the former Indian minister of railways, his son Tejashwi, and other individuals.

The&nbsp;supplementary chargesheet has named 11 suspects and includes 96 supporting documents. According to news agency ANI, the court has scheduled a review of the chargesheet and documents on August 13.

The case concerns the time when Lalu served as the railway minister in the UPA-led&nbsp;government. Allegedly, many people were assigned to Group "D" jobs in different Indian Railways zones between 2004 and 2009.

Katyal, described by the agency as a "close associate" of the Yadav family, is listed as a director of this company. Furthermore, A B Exports Pvt Ltd, owned by Tejashwi Yadav and Chanda Yadav, is alleged to be a "shell" or fake company, also registered at the same bungalow in New Friends Colony.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has accused Rabri Devi and Hema Yadav of "illegally" obtaining four pieces of land from railway appointees and later selling them to Meridian Construction India Ltd, a company linked to former RJD MLA Syed Abu Dojana, according to news agency PTI.

The ED stated that the "proceeds of crime" from this sale were moved through a series of transactions to A B Exports Pvt Ltd and Bhagirathi Tubes. The agency alleged, "Rabri Devi and Hema Yadav sold these land parcels for Rs 3.5 crore against the acquisition cost of Rs 7.5 lakh, thus deriving huge gains."

In the charge sheet, the agency has asked the court to prosecute the accused for money laundering and to confiscate the assets that were previously attached in this case. The money laundering case, filed under the criminal sections of the PMLA, stems from a complaint by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has already submitted a charge sheet in this matter.
