<p>Northern Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer, Deepak Kumar, has scheduled the inspection for June 27 and 28. Kumar promised that the required tasks would be completed in time for the CRS inspection.</p>

<p>Since 1997, the USBRL project, which spans 272 km, has seen 209 km commissioned in phases. By the end of the year, the last 17 km from Reasi to Katra should be finished, allowing a train to finally connect Kashmir with the rest of the nation. <p>Sikkim, the only Indian state without access to railways, is all set to undergo a connectivity revolution. As per news agency ANI, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the state’s first railway station on Monday (Feb 26).</p>

<p>“Rangpo station is the form of a touristic and defensive point of view for Sikkim and India”, said Deputy Railway Manager of Alipurduar, Amarjeet Agrawal.</p>

<p>“Basically, Sikkim did not have a railway line earlier. The government has signed this project in three phases. In the first phase, Sevoke to the Rangpo rail project; in the second&nbsp;phase, from Rangpo to Gangtok; and the third phase, from Gangtok to Nathula,” the official added.</p>

<p>Sikkim became India's part on 16 May 1975 as the country's&nbsp;22nd state when&nbsp;the monarchy was abolished.</p>

<h2><strong>India’s first underground station</strong></h2>

<p>The Sikkim railway station will be built as a part of the Sivok-Rangpo railway project, launched back in October 2009. The railway line’s projected length is almost 45km, spanning from West Bengal’s Sivok to Sikkim’s Rangpo.</p>

<p>"In the Indian Railway, especially in broad gauge, this is the first underground railway station. <p>According to reports, the tunnelling has been done using the latest NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) technique.</p>

And that launch is going to happen before October 31.”</p>

<h2><strong>Vande Bharat to replace Rajdhani, Shatabdi?</strong></h2>

<p>The sleeper version of Vande Bharat has been designed to cover long-distance travel and can run at a speed of 220 km per hour. However, on the tracks, the train will run at a speed of 200 km per hour, according to the officials. This will allow passengers to end a long journey with an overnight travel at high speed.<br />

The sleeper version of Vande Bharat trains may gradually become an alternative to Rajdhani trains. On the other hand, the chair car version is likely to replace Shatabdi trains.</p>

<p>A tender was issued by the Indian Railways for 400 Vande Bharat trains. The first 200 trains to be produced will be made of steel and are likely to have a seating arrangement similar to Shatabdi Express. The second lot will include sleeper coaches which are made of aluminium.<br />

The Delhi-Kolkata and Delhi-Mumbai tracks will be repaired by the officials before the sleeper trains of Vande Bharat run on them. The officials will also work on fencing, bridges and signal systems on the routes.<br />

The officials are developing Vande Metro to facilitate short-distance travel for the people. This new type of Vande Bharat train will consist of 12 coaches.</p>

<p>Vaishnaw said the projects were the result of the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for Multi-modal&nbsp;connectivity. States such as Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal have been included in it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably,&nbsp;on the occasion of the 77th Independence Day, PM Modi said the scheme was directed towards&nbsp;skilled workers such as barbers, goldsmiths and washermen among others.</p>

<p>As for the Digital India campaign, Vaishnaw said the cabinet had approved an outlay of $1.7 billion (Rs 14,903 crore) for five years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The Prime Minister in the cabinet meeting has approved the Digital India programme with an outlay of Rs 14,903 crore," Vaishnaw said.</p>

<p>Under the expansion, 525,000 IT professionals will undergo upskilling while 265,000 people will be trained for cybersecurity. The mobile-based Umang application will get 540 more services, up from the current 1,700.</p>

<p>Meanwhile,&nbsp;Union Minister Anurag Thakur conveyed the approval of the&nbsp;PM e-Bus Seva for which nearly $7 billion (Rs 57,613 crores) will be spent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"PM e-Bus Seva has been given approval. Rs 57,613 crores will be spent on this. Around 10,000 new electric buses will be provided across the country," said Thakur.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Out of Rs 57,613 crores, Rs 20,000 crores will be provided by the central government. The scheme will cover cities with population of 3 lakh&nbsp;and above," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, under the scheme, city bus operations with 10,000 e-buses on Public Private Partnership (PPP) model will start. This scheme will support bus operations for 10 years.</p>

<p>"Around 1300 major railway stations in India will now be developed as Amrit Bharat Railway Station. They will be re-developed in a modern way. Of these, work on the redevelopment of 508 Amrit Bharat Railway Stations begins today," he said.</p>

<p>"You can imagine how big of a drive this will be for the infrastructure, Railways and most importantly for the common people of my country."</p>

<p>PM Modi added that all rail tracks will be electrified in the country, highlighting that&nbsp;the number of railway stations generating electricity from solar panels had&nbsp;reached more than 1,200.</p>

<p>"Over the last nine years, we have made record investments in the Railways. More than Rs 2.5 lakh crore has been allocated in this year's budget for the Railways. This budget is five times more than the budget of 2014."</p>

<p>He also took a swipe at the opposition saying it was "stuck to attitude of won't work, won't let work".&nbsp;</p>

<p>A day prior to the launch, Union Railways Minister Ashwinin Vaishnaw said PM Modi was "personally" monitoring the project.&nbsp;</p>

India: PM Modi launches $3 billion revamp of 508 railway stations across country

<p>At least four people were killed, including a&nbsp;Railway Protection Force (RPF) assistant sub-inspector, aboard a running&nbsp;Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express train by an RPF constable&nbsp;in the west Indian state of Maharashtra on Monday morning (July 31).</p>

<p>The incident transpired near Palghar railway station, located approximately 100 kilometres from the capital city of Mumbai. According to preliminary reports, the constable fired using his automatic weapon, shortly after 5 am, killing the RPF ASI and three other passengers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The RPF constable has been identified as Chetan Kumar Choudhary and he opened fire on his escort duty in-charge ASI Tika Ram Meena in the B5 coach of the train, according to railways officials. After killing Meena, Kumar shifted to another carriage and shot dead three passengers, the officials added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In an unfortunate incident on 31st July, 2023, in Train No 12956 Jaipur – Mumbai Superfast Express escorting staff constable Chetan Kumar shot at his colleague escort in charge ASI Tika Ram,"&nbsp;the Western Railway spokesperson said.</p>

<p>"The constable upon shooting his colleague, initially held passengers at gunpoint. It is regretted that ASI Tika Ram and three passengers were shot at. Constable Chetan Kumar got down near Dahisar and tried to flee after Alarm Chain Pulling. But, was arrested by RPF/Bhayandar along with the weapon."</p>

<p>“The accused has been arrested. DCP North GRP has been informed,"&nbsp;RPF added.</p>

<p>The families of the deceased persons are currently being contacted and the ex-gartia amount will be handed to them, according to the Indian Express newspaper.</p>

<p>Senior officials are currently on their way to the site while investigative agencies open the probe. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown at this stage.&nbsp;</p>

The footage shows the man arguing about the need for such a certification. He expressed concerns over the halal certification during the month of 'Sawan' where most Hindus do not eat non-vegetarian food items.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is the month of Sawan and you are serving us halal tea. What is written here? Halal certified. What is it?" the man be heard saying, aboard the Vande Bharat Express train.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Upon hearing the passenger's argument, the railway official tells him that the tea packet is a premix and that the ingredients in the packet are completely vegetarian, pointing towards the mandatory "Green Dot" identification mark.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Railways issues clarification&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>After the controversy snowballed, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) also released a statement, clarifying that the tea packet was indeed vegetarian.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Some sections in media have reported that some export quality tea is being served by IRCTC which has many certificates like FSSAI, ISO, GMP, FDA, Hallal, etc. But it is being highlighted by some media sections as it is only halal certified," the railways said in a statement.</p>

<p>"The Ministry of Railways clarifies and reassures passengers that the product used is of international standards and hence, the manufacturer ensures all compliances, both domestic and the targeted countries for export purposes," the statement said.</p>

<p>India’s premier investigating agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Friday, arrested three people responsible for the Odisha train accidents that caused the death of 293 people and left over 1,000 injured.</p>

<p>The three railway officials who have been arrested are senior section engineer Arun Kumar Mohanta, section engineer Mohammad Amir Khan and technician Pappu Kumar.</p>

<p>According to reports, these three were aware that their actions might lead to this tragedy.</p>

<p>They have been arrested under Indian Penal Code sections 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender).</p>

<p>Last week, the Commission of&nbsp;Railway Safety (CRS)&nbsp; that was probing the incident flagged that human error in railway signalling system led to one of the deadliest railway crashes in India's history.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The committee found&nbsp;that the train accident occurred after workers repairing the railroad barrier made faulty connections in the automated signalling system on the network. It also found “lapses at multiple levels” which led to the death of at least 293 people and injured more than 1,000.</p>

<p>The CRS investigators also said that the first of the three collisions that occurred on June 2 was due to the recent repair work conducted at the signalling circuit to fix frequent problems at a nearby railroad, reported Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The signalling staff at the site which carried out the repair work on the day of the accident said they were “misled” by the wrong lettering on the terminal and the circuit which showed that the automated system which guides a train from one track to another or the “point” had been shifted in the past, as per Indian media reports citing the official findings.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since the location box where the wires were connected&nbsp;contained the wrong lettering, they indicated incorrect functions. The probe also found that the completion wiring diagram, which shows the technician the correct way of reconnecting the wires after maintenance work, was changed back in 2015 and was duly approved but the change of the labelling had not been done physically.&nbsp;</p>

Faulty wiring at location box According to the report, the wires in the level-crossing location box were labelled incorrectly and remained undetected for years which not only led to a mix-up during maintenance work but also the accident could have been avoided if the red flags had not been ignored. The Indian Railways’ Signal and Telecommunication department has reportedly been found primarily responsible for the incident. Additionally, the report also noted that the station master, a part of the operations department, was also said to have been responsible for not being able to detect the “abnormal behaviour” of the automated signalling system. The signalling staff at the site which carried out the repair work on the day of the accident said they were “misled” by the wrong lettering on the terminal and the circuit which showed that the automated system which guides a train from one track to another or the “point” had been shifted in the past, as per Indian media reports citing the official findings. Since the location box where the wires were connected contained the wrong lettering, they indicated incorrect functions. The probe also found that the completion wiring diagram, which shows the technician the correct way of reconnecting the wires after maintenance work, was changed back in 2015 and was duly approved but the change of the labelling had not been done physically. <h2><strong>Indian Railways responds promptly</strong></h2>

<p>Hours after uproar over the internet, Western Railways said that the issue was promptly attended to and all coaches of Avantika Express were thoroughly examined.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The train has commenced its return journey &amp; there are no such issues now," it said. “Passenger convenience is of utmost priority &amp; WR leaves no stone unturned to resolve passengers' grievances.”</p>

<p>This comes amid the Opposition's criticism of railways, with several passengers complaining about train delays and overcrowded coaches.</p>

<p>Last year in July, passengers sitting in the air-conditioned coach of the Panchvati Express faced the same problem of a leaky roof. After several complaints, the AC coach was removed from the rake and another coach was put in its place.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier this month, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal came down heavily on the ruling BJP at the Centre, saying the government has destroyed the well-running fleet of trains. Kejriwal claimed that AC and sleeper coaches have become worse than the general compartments as the passengers with allotted berths don't get adequate space to sit or sleep.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) said that train coaches have been turned into 'torture centres' for the passengers.</p>

The mountain's slopes, which support one foundation of the main span, were stabilised by creating the special hybrid foundation on the Katra end because of space constraints.<br />

The main parts of the construction of the bridge, which includes the main pylon which has a 40-metre-deep hybrid foundation, ancillary viaduct, and the central embankment, were carried out on the Srinagar end.</p>

Watch | India gets its first 'cable-stayed rail bridge' with 96 cables

<p>The Indian Railway Ministry on Monday announced a record revenue of Rs 2.40 lakh crore ($29.2 billion)&nbsp;for the financial year 2022-23, with a 25 per cent increase in the revenue. This year's revenue is some $5.9 billion more than the previous year. It added that in the financial year 2022-23, the freight revenue also increased by 15 per cent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the data announced by the Ministry, railways' passenger revenues registered an all-time high growth of 61 per cent. It added that after three years, the Railway is about to fully meet its pension expenditure, The Statesman reported.&nbsp;</p>

The Indian Railway Ministry on Monday announced a record revenue of Rs 2.40 lakh crore ($29.2 billion) for the financial year 2022-23, with a 25 per cent increase in the revenue.

<p>Delhi Police on Sunday arrested two men for allegedly duping several applicants seeking jobs with the Indian Railways. The two arrested men, Sivaraman V and Vikas Rana are accused of falsely offering jobs to victims and making them count trains at the New Delhi Railway Station for several weeks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the police, the victims paid almost Rs 200,000 ($2,400) to Rs 2.4 million ($29,528) each to secure their jobs as ticket examiners, traffic assistants or clerks.</p>

<p>Officials&nbsp;have also identified Satender Dubey, a 35-year-old man from Bihar as the leader of the gang, who lived in Uttam Nagar, southwest Delhi. He and his 24-year-old accomplice are on the run.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A senior official told PTI that Rana placed two people and was paid Rs 6,000 ($72.5) for each placement, the Daily Pioneer reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian railways have carried out multiple trials on the Budgam-Baramulla rail link and Banihal-Baramulla rail link as well. The government is planning to start the first electric rail on October 2. The total project cost for the electric rail link has been 324 crores.&nbsp;</p>

<p>''This electric train has two sections, the Budgam-Baramulla rail link trials had taken place earlier this year and now we did the trials for the Budgam-Banihal section on 24,25 and 26th September. We also got the security/safety inspection done by the principal chief electrical engineer, Northern Railways. It was done for three days, and we are fit for running the first electric train in this section,'' said Abid Amin Shah, additional general manager, IRCON.</p>

<p>''This train has less operational costs, we were running the trains on diesel earlier. An electrical train will bring 60 per cent cost saving on fuel. The diesel locomotives are being phased out across the country and most trains will run on electricity. The running time will also be reduced, as its speed is more than diesel trains. It's the mission of the Government of India to make railways pollution free. There will be zero pollution with the introduction of these electric trains. And especially with regard to Kashmir valley, it's a great thing,'' said Abid Amin Shah, additional general manager, IRCON.</p>

<p>Since the operational costs of the railways will come down, the passengers will also get benefitted. The electric trains will be faster and will save the passengers a lot of time.&nbsp;</p>

Indian Railways introduce first electric train in Jammu and Kashmir on Banihal-Baramulla route

<p>An Indian man Tungnath Chaturvedi has won a 22-year-old legal battle with the railways over an overpriced ticket.</p>

<p>In 1999, Chaturvedi bought two railway tickets for which he was charged 20 rupees ($0.25; £0.21) extra at Mathura cantonment railway station in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.</p>

<p>Chaturvedi, a lawyer, filed a case against the North East Railway in consumer court against the injustice which specifically deals with grievances related to services.</p>

<p>Chaturvedi told BBC, "I have attended more than 100 hearings in connection with this case. But you can't put a price on the energy and time I've lost fighting this case."</p>

<p>According to him, "The railways also tried to dismiss the case, saying complaints against the railways should be addressed to the railway tribunal and not&nbsp;consumer court."</p>

<p>"But we used a 2021 Supreme Court ruling to prove that the matter could be heard in a consumer court," he added.</p>

<p>After a long legal battle for 22 years, the consumer court ordered the railways to pay him a fine of 15,000 rupees ($188; £154) and refund him the 20 rupees at 12 per cent interest per year.</p>

<p>According to the court, the interest rate would be increased to 15 per cent if the amount was not paid within the specified time of 30 days.</p>

<p>In response, Chaturvedi said, "It's not the money that matters. This was always a fight for justice and a fight against corruption, so it was worth it."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Also, since I am an advocate myself, I didn't have to pay money to a lawyer or bear the cost of travelling to the court. That can get quite expensive," he added.</p>

In 1999, Chaturvedi bought two railway tickets for which he was charged 20 rupees ($0.25; £0.21) extra at Mathura cantonment railway station in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Chaturvedi, a lawyer, filed a case against the North East Railway in consumer court against the injustice which specifically deals with grievances related to services. Chaturvedi told BBC, "I have attended more than 100 hearings in connection with this case. But you can't put a price on the energy and time I've lost fighting this case." "But we used a 2021 Supreme Court ruling to prove that the matter could be heard in a consumer court," he added. After a long legal battle for 22 years, the consumer court ordered the railways to pay him a fine of 15,000 rupees ($188; £154) and refund him the 20 rupees at 12 per cent interest per year. According to the court, the interest rate would be increased to 15 per cent if the amount was not paid within the specified time of 30 days. In response, Chaturvedi said, "It's not the money that matters. This was always a fight for justice and a fight against corruption, so it was worth it." "Also, since I am an advocate myself, I didn't have to pay money to a lawyer or bear the cost of travelling to the court. That can get quite expensive," he added. <p>Anbazhgan worked for the railways for 33 years. He took up the job of ATVM facilitator after his retirement. This post is only allocated to retired railway personnel. Anbazhgan works mainly at Egmore station in Chennai. He has been working since 2015.</p>

<p>While the ATVM kiosks at railway stations are meant to be operated by passengers themselves (those with railway prepaid cards) themselves, facilitators often operate the kiosks and hand out the tickets.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I have a prepaid card and every time a passenger asks for a ticket and tenders the exact change, I swipe the card, select the destination on the screen and handover the ticket" Anbazhagan told WION.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When asked how he manages to do the job with such speed and perfection, he said, "There are dozens of destinations to select on my selection screen, but I don't take that trouble. The ticket costs either Rs.5/10/15, so I select the last destination that one can travel to for that particular amount. Thereby, instead of selecting from dozens of locations, I only have to select from 3-4 stations on my screen".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Anbazhagan adds that he prefers to do his work while standing, as that makes it easier to carry out the task in a fast and comfortable manner.&nbsp;</p>
