Indian family of four killed in apartment fire in Kuwait

An Indian family of four lost their lives after a fire broke out at their home in Abbassia, Kuwait on Friday (Jul 19) night. The tragic incident transpired after the family had returned to the Middle Eastern nation after completing their vacation.

The victims were identified as Matthews Mulackal, his wife Lini Abraham and their two children. The family hailed fromNeerattupuram in the Alappuzha district of the southern Indian state of Kerala.

According to TheArab Times, the fire was caused by a short circuit in the air-conditioner and broke out around 8:00 pm (local time) in the family's second-floor apartment.

The family had been living in Kuwait for the last 15 years according to one of the relatives of the deceased.

"Mathew has been working there for the past 15 years. His wife is a nurse. The children are studying there. They left after their vacation on Thursday night from Nedumbassery."

Embassy issues statement

The Indian embassy in Kuwait took note of the incident and shared its'deepest condolences' with the family of the victims.

"Embassy @indembkwt expresses its deepest condolences on the tragic demise of Mr Mathews Mulackal, his wife and 2 children due to fire in his flat in Abassiya yesterday night. Embassy is in touch with his family and will ensure early repatriation of mortal remains," read the post on X (formerly Twitter).

The incident took place days after a devastatingfire in the southern city of Mangaf in Kuwait killed 45 Indian nationals.

The building, which housednearly 195 labourers from the nearby commercial area, was home to people from the southern Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu as well as from northern India, as per Indian local media reports.

Among the 45 deceased, 23hailed from Kerala, seven from TN, two each from AndhraPradesh and Odisha, while one each came from Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.

Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabahcriticised the real estate owners and attributed the tragedy to their negligence.
