India: Activist Sonam Wangchuk released from detention; to meet PM Modi or president soon

LadakhactivistSonam Wangchuk, who was detained by the Delhi Police, was released from Bawana Police Station on Wednesday (Oct 2) evening. Wangchuk said the home ministry had assured him of a meeting with either the prime minister or president soon to address his concerns.
Wangchuk, along with around 120 others fromLadakh, was detained on Monday night, September 30, 2024, at theDelhi-Haryana border.
“We faced some difficulties upon arriving in Delhi due to the detention, but everything happens for a reason, and we are glad that our message of environmental conservation reached more people. We have submitted a memorandum to the government, urging protection for Ladakh under constitutional provisions to safeguard the Himalayas,” said Wangchuk.
Wangchuk and his supporters were detained while marching from Leh to Delhi to demand constitutional safeguards forLadakh. The march, which began on September 1, was set to culminate at Rajghat on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary.
