The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has written to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat on Thursday (April 2, 2026), demanding the removal of Raghav Chadha from the post of deputy leader of the party in the Upper House, news agency PTI confirmed, citing sources. The AAP has also requested in its communication that Raghav Chadha should not be given speaking time from AAP’s quota in the Rajya Sabha, marking a significant shift in its parliamentary strategy.
The AAP has proposed Ashok Mittal as its new deputy leader in the Upper House and has requested the secretariat to expedite the formal approval of his appointment as soon as possible. The party currently holds 10 seats in the Rajya Sabha, including seven members from Punjab and three from Delhi.
Raghav Chadha, a Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, has been part of the Aam Aadmi Party since its early days. He began his political journey in 2012, working closely with Arvind Kejriwal on the Delhi Lokpal Bill. Over time, he rose rapidly within the party ranks, serving as a national spokesperson and later becoming its youngest treasurer following AAP’s victory in the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections.
He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from South Delhi but was defeated by Ramesh Bidhuri. Subsequently, he won the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections from Rajendra Nagar and went on to serve as vice-chairman of the Delhi Jal Board. In 2022, at the age of 33, Chadha became the youngest member of the Rajya Sabha. Since then, he has played a significant role in both the party’s parliamentary activities and organisational matters, working closely with senior leaders such as Manish Sisodia and Bhagwant Mann.
Raghav Chadha distanced from AAP
In the past few days, Raghav Chadha has largely distanced himself from the agenda or leaders of the AAP ever since the defeat of the party in the Delhi elections 2025. In the Rajya Sabha, he raised several issues focusing on public interest that include paid paternity leave and high food costs at airports.

He also highlighted concerns such as protecting the rights of gig workers and addressing the growing traffic crisis in major Indian cities. Chadha had earlier brought up menstrual hygiene in Parliament as well, emphasising that it is linked to health, education, and equality. However, his silence on key AAP issues fuelled speculation about a possible exit, especially after he was excluded from the party’s list of star campaigners for Assam.
