The party currently holds 10 seats in the Rajya Sabha, including seven members from Punjab and three from Delhi. Raghav Chadha, a Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, has been part of the Aam Aadmi Party since its early days. He began his political journey in 2012, working closely with Arvind Kejriwal on the Delhi Lokpal Bill. Over time, he rose rapidly within the party ranks, serving as a national spokesperson and later becoming its youngest treasurer following AAP’s victory in the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections. He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from South Delhi but was defeated by Ramesh Bidhuri. Subsequently, he won the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections from Rajendra Nagar and went on to serve as vice-chairman of the Delhi Jal Board. In 2022, at the age of 33, Chadha became the youngest member of the Rajya Sabha. Since then, he has played a significant role in both the party’s parliamentary activities and organisational matters, working closely with senior leaders such as Manish Sisodia and Bhagwant Mann.
Raghav Chadha distanced from AAP
In the past few days, Raghav Chadha has largely distanced himself from the agenda or leaders of the AAP ever since the defeat of the party in the Delhi elections 2025. In the Rajya Sabha, he raised several issues focusing on public interest that include paid paternity leave and high food costs at airports. He also highlighted concerns such as protecting the rights of gig workers and addressing the growing traffic crisis in major Indian cities. Chadha had earlier brought up menstrual hygiene in Parliament as well, emphasising that it is linked to health, education, and equality. However, his silence on key AAP issues fuelled speculation about a possible exit, especially after he was excluded from the party’s list of star campaigners for Assam. Also read: Narendra Modi addresses Sadhana Saptah 2026: Focus on Mission Karmayogi and governance reform

Punjab AAP MLA accused of rape flees to Australia, calls charges 'political conspiracy'

A political storm brews over Delhi’s cloud-seeding experiments to fight pollution and induce rainfall. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP are at loggerheads: with each side accusing the other of political theatrics ahead of winter smog season. What is cloud seeding? Does it really work? And why has it turned into a fresh flashpoint in Delhi’s political and environmental battle?

Opposition AAP & Ruling BJP Clash Over Cloud Seeding

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) slammed Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta-led BJP government for its "failure" to curb pollution in the city, after the national capital witnessed a poor and toxic air quality following Diwali. However, in response to the criticism, the BJP blamed the citizens for bursting crackers and farmers for stubble burning in nearby states. AAP MLA Gopal Rai accused the Delhi government of "making excuses" and not taking action to prevent the pollution. "There is a lot of pollution in Delhi. The level of pollution has increased. But the Delhi government is not doing anything. They are making excuses and blaming other states. BJP is in power everywhere in UP, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Why didn't they talk to any other state first before Diwali?" he said, ANI reported. He alleged that BJP leaders were encouraging people to burst firecrackers despite the ongoing air emergency in the national capital. Meanwhile, AAP state president Saurabh Bharadwaj also took a dig at BJP’s Rekha Gupta over the worsening pollution levels, saying she did not even know how to “pronounce AQI.” "We don't know what the government has done. The Chief Minister does not even know how to pronounce AQI. She calls it IQ, QQ. She can't even say AQI. She has no understanding. The government has failed to stop pollution," he said, ANI reported. Bharadwaj further accused the BJP government of "misleading" the public, claiming that it had failed to initiate the promised artificial rain in Delhi. "The government lies. The government said that after Diwali, they would fix all the pollution by conducting artificial rain. Did it happen? No, my question is that if you could have conducted artificial rain, then why didn't you do it? Do you want people to fall ill?" he asked.
BJP's response to AAP
The BJP, meanwhile, attributed the pollution crisis to stubble burning in neighbouring states. "Delhi bearing the brunt of pollution from neighbouring states, stubble being burnt despite the Supreme Court's stricture," Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said. In addition, BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya added that Delhi would continue to suffer until “Punjab stops stubble burning.” "Stop blaming Deepawali for the sins of the Aam Aadmi Party — it's their smoke, not the festival's lamps or firecrackers, that darkens Delhi's skies. Their dark shadow still looms large over the Capital," he said.

'Can’t even say AQI': AAP targets CM Rekha Gupta for pollution in Delhi; BJP shift blames to crackers, stubble Burning

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday (Jul 18) announced its formal exit from the INDIA bloc, a coalition of nearly three dozen Opposition parties, citing the bloc's failure "to stay united and take steps to further its agenda" after the 2024 general elections. The AAP's withdrawal comes just a day before a scheduled INDIA bloc meeting and days ahead of the scheduled beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament. The party sought to blame the Indian National Congress (INC) for its unceremonious exit from the alliance that was formed in July 2023 to take on the BJP-led NDA.
The exit announcement
Announcing the decision from his Delhi residence, AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh squarely blamed the Congress party, accusing it of neglecting its responsibility as the bloc's largest constituent. "The AAP is not a part of the INDIA alliance, though we will continue to strongly raise public issues in Parliament, oppose the government whenever we believe it is in the wrong," he said. He added that AAP would now contest all future elections, including the upcoming Bihar assembly polls, on its own.He further said that the "INDIA alliance should hold its meetings and take whatever decisions it wants to take". Singh said that the Congress party failed to keep the Opposition united after 2024. "The INDIA bloc did not take steps to further its agenda, did not hold any meetings after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The largest party in the alliance is Congress. But did it play its role to keep the parties united?" Singh asked.
AAP vs Congress
Though AAP and Congress had forged a tactical understanding in states like Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Goa and Chandigarh during the Lok Sabha elections, relations between the two have remained frosty. In the recent 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, both parties contested the elections separately and took frequent potshots at each other during the campaign.Despite this, AAP insists it will continue to oppose the BJP in Parliament and raise key public issues, even if outside the INDIA fold. "We have always played the role of a strong opposition and will continue to do that," Singh said.
Congress slams AAP's “double game”
Responding to the announcement, Congress leader and Punjab Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa said AAP's departure would, in fact, "strengthen the alliance," and accused the party of "playing a double game"."AAP's exit will only strengthen the INDIA alliance by removing ambiguity. Rahul Gandhi has emerged as the clear and credible face of the fight to protect India's Constitution, democracy, and secular ethos... In contrast, AAP was always playing a double game. Kejriwal has publicly appealed to Congress workers to defect to AAP, exposing his intentions. Rather than fighting BJP, AAP consistently targeted Congress to weaken the larger opposition space. With AAP out, INDIA is now free to focus on real, committed partners and present a united, clear alternative to the BJP.

The AAP's withdrawal comes just a day before a scheduled INDIA bloc meeting and days ahead of the scheduled beginning of the monsoon session of Parliament. The party sought to blame the Congress for its exit from the alliance that was formed in July 2023 to take on the BJP-led NDA.

The exit announcement Announcing the decision from his Delhi residence, AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh squarely blamed the Congress party, accusing it of neglecting its responsibility as the bloc's largest constituent. "The AAP is not a part of the INDIA alliance, though we will continue to strongly raise public issues in Parliament, oppose the government whenever we believe it is in the wrong," he said. He added that AAP would now contest all future elections, including the upcoming Bihar assembly polls, on its own. He further said that the "INDIA alliance should hold its meetings and take whatever decisions it wants to take". AAP vs Congress Though AAP and Congress had forged a tactical understanding in states like Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Goa and Chandigarh during the Lok Sabha elections, relations between the two have remained frosty. In the recent 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, both parties contested the elections separately and took frequent potshots at each other during the campaign. Despite this, AAP insists it will continue to oppose the BJP in Parliament and raise key public issues, even if outside the INDIA fold. "We have always played the role of a strong opposition and will continue to do that," Singh said. Congress slams AAP's “double game” Responding to the announcement, Congress leader and Punjab Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa said AAP's departure would, in fact, "strengthen the alliance," and accused the party of "playing a double game".
Discontent simmering in AAP

The exodus of so many councillors from AAP points to a serious discontent in the party that was routed by the BJP in the assembly polls in February. AAP has been plagued by internal strife since the assembly poll results came in. AAP had carried out an organisational shake-up in March to stem the discontent by appointing former minister Saurabh Bharadwaj as the new president of its Delhi unit. Former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia was appointed in charge of Punjab, where assembly elections are due in 2027.

Following the storm that was caused by strong winds blowing at 30 to 40 kmph on Wednesday night (May 14), thousands of residents in Delhi-NCR have reported breathing difficulties, irritation in the eyes, and coughing symptoms.

The Comptroller and Auditor General's (CAG) report on Delhi Liquor Policy, presented to the Delhi Assembly, reveals that a group of ministers led by then Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia altered the expert panel's recommendations for the policy.
This alteration led to significant changes, including granting wholesale licenses to private entities instead of a state-owned entity, and modifying the excise duty structure. The report highlights several deficiencies in the New Excise Policy, including ignoring expert committee suggestions, flawed license design and award, and poor policy implementation.

A recent CAG report has exposed significant lapses in the implementation of Delhi's now-scrapped excise policy, resulting in a staggering loss of approximately Rs 2,002 crore to the exchequer.

According to the report, an expert committee advised the government to take control of the wholesale liquor trade through a state-owned beverage or wholesale corporation. This recommendation was made to prevent potential conflicts of interest and illegal activities, such as those that occurred in the past when private entities controlled both wholesale and retail operations, and wholesalers allegedly facilitated the supply of illicit liquor using duplicate barcodes.
Even the GoM, in its report, accepted that many wholesalers were able to acquire retail licences through proxy ownership and make it possible to indulge in the sale of non-duty paid liquor, it said.

The reason provided in the GoM Report for not forming such government-owned wholesale corporation was that a deep study and implementation of the same would require time and till such time L-1 license should be granted to private players,” the report read.
“It was noted from the finally-approved Excise Policy for the year 2022-23 that the wholesale operation was proposed to be managed by private players, which belied the claims made by (Delhi) Government that private wholesale operations were only an interim measure,” the CAG report reads on page 83.
The expert committee recommended maintaining the existing system of collecting excise duty on a per-bottle basis, while proposing changes to the pricing mechanism.
"However, the GoM favoured advance collection of excise duty, in the form of License fee, which was practically delinked to the actual sale of liquor,” the report reads.

Preferential licensing, financial irregularities: CAG report spells trouble for AAP in Delhi Excise Scam

Former Delhi chief minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi, on Tuesday (Feb 25), said in response to the CAG report presented in the assembly that the audit document actually exposed corruption under the old liquor policy, which was in place from 2017-21.
She alleged that the residents of Delhi suffered losses due to the illegal importation of liquor from neighbouring states Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
"The excise audit report was presented in the Delhi Assembly today. Its seven chapters are on the excise policy from 2017-21, and one chapter is on the new excise policy. The Delhi government had exposed the flaws and corruption of the old excise policy to the people of Delhi. Under that policy, liquor was brought illegally from Haryana and UP. We all know whose government is there in these states and who must be getting the profit," Atishi said, while addressing a press conference.

"This report is repeating the same thing that we said that the people of Delhi are incurring losses due to the old policy. This policy makes it clear that the AAP government took the right decision by removing the old policy," she said.
"This report has confirmed our point. There was corruption in how much liquor was being sold. This report shows that more than 28 per cent of corruption was being done by the contractors, and the money was going into the pockets of the brokers," Attishi added.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday (Feb 25) tabled the CAG report in the assembly. The report revealed that the Delhi government suffered cumulative losses of over Rs 2,000 crore (USD 242.42 million) due to the 2021-2022 excise policy.
The Aap Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi had implemented the liquor policy on November 17, 2021. But it was scrapped at the end of September 2022 as corruption allegations were levelled against the party. AAP denied the accusations.
The investigating agencies have said that the profit margins of wholesalers were increased from 5 per cent to 12 per cent under the new policybrought by AAP. The agencies have also alleged that the new policy resulted in cartelisation, and those ineligible for liquor licences were favoured for monetary benefits.
Delhi BJP chief Virendraa Sachdeva alleged that AAP looted the people of Delhi and scammed them.
