India: 'Vote from home' a threat to democracy, says AAP. Here's what Election Commission replies

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released the second part of its 'Sankalp patra' or manifesto on Tuesday (Jan 21) for the upcoming Delhi election scheduled for February 5. The party promised to address citizens' concerns and announced plans to establish a team to investigate "misgovernance and corruption" allegedly carried out by the Aam Aadmi Party (<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/aap" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">AAP</a>).

The manifesto also included a series of freebies, such as free education, from preschool to postgraduate level, for "needy students" enrolled in Delhi government institutions. Additionally, young men and women preparing for entrance examinations were promised Rs 15,000 in financial assistance, along with reimbursements for travel expenses.
For students from Scheduled Castes pursuing technical and professional courses, the BJP proposed a monthly stipend of Rs 1,000.

Speaking at a press conference, Kejriwal claimed the BJP&rsquo;s promise to restrict free education to only "needy" students was a direct attack on the progress made in Delhi&rsquo;s education system, which currently benefits 1.8 million children.
He argued that such a move would place a heavy financial burden on families, saying: &ldquo;Private school fees for two children could cost up to ₹10,000 per month.&rdquo;
Kejriwal also alleged that the BJP&rsquo;s plans to reduce free healthcare services, including the widely used Mohalla Clinics, which would lead to additional monthly costs of Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 for basic medical needs.
&ldquo;Altogether, this would mean an extra Rs 15,000 per month for an average household, making life in Delhi unaffordable for many families,&rdquo; he said.
The AAP leader took to social media platform X, saying, &ldquo;In both manifestos, the BJP has openly declared that they will shut down Mohalla Clinics and stop free education in government schools. Their sole agenda in these elections is to dismantle all schemes benefiting the people of Delhi.&rdquo;

Aam Admi Party chief and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has been alerted by the special intelligence agencies about a potential threat of an attack by pro-Khalistani elements, according to Indian media reports.
This prompted a review of Kejriwal's security arrangements in Delhi and he currently is under Z-category security. &nbsp;
The intel agencies have provided inputs to the Delhi police on the matter.

<h2>'God will save me': Kejriwal</h2>
Reacting to the reports of threats against him, Kejriwal on Wednesday (Jan 15) said that God will save him.
Ahead of filing his nomination for the Delhi assembly elections, he said, "Upar wala bachayega (God will save me)."
Meanwhile, India's Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday (Jan 15) authorised the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to prosecute Kejriwal under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) for his alleged involvement in money laundering related to the liquor scam case, Indian media reported citing official sources.
The ED also got a nod to initiate prosecution against former deputy CM Manish Sisodia in the case.
The development comes as both AAP leaders are out on bail.
The Supreme Court ordered Kejriwal to be released in September 2024. Sisodia was released in August.
The move also comes following the Supreme Court's ruling on November 6 that the ED must obtain prior sanction, just like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), to prosecute under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
This sanction is required for prosecution under section 197 (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code, now known as section 218 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita.
The ruling had put the framing of charges against Kejriwal in the excise policy case on hold, as the Delhi court awaited the necessary sanction.&nbsp;

India's intelligence agencies alert Kejriwal over potential threat from pro-Khalistani elements

Over 400 schools in India's Delhi received bomb threats in 2024. Now the probe into the event has triggered a political storm in poll-bound national capital.
The Delhi police revealed that the family of a teen allegedly involved in sending the bomb threats works with a non-profit organisation (NGO) that "had connections with a political party".&nbsp;
BJP slammed AAP over having &ldquo;deep bonds&rdquo; with the NGOs that have opposed hanging Afzal Guru, a convict of the 2001 Indian Parliament attack.
&ldquo;All of us know that AAP has deep bonds with such NGOs who have opposed Afzal Guru's hanging. In February 2015, the &lsquo;tukde-tukde&rsquo; slogans were raised on Afzal Guru's death anniversary and the AAP kept the file closed for months... Who are the people of these NGOs and are they related to the Aam Aadmi Party?... Both of the parents of Delhi CM Atishi supported the clemency petition of Afzal Guru,&rdquo; BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said.
He also demanded party leader Arvind Kejriwal to come forward and clarify the connections AAP has with the accused NGO.
"There seems to be a direct connection between these two... Is the AAP involved in this?... I ask Arvind Kejriwal to come forward and AAP should clarify what their relation is with these people... If juveniles are doing this, then what kind of venom are these NGOs injecting into the minds of the children of the country?... We want a clear answer from the AAP... If they don't give a clear answer, that deepens the doubt...," he added.
Now AAP has retaliated, saying that the opposition was "politicising" the event and was using the incident for its own gains.
"You (BJP) are politicising the issue of school children getting threats... The first threat was given in May 2024. After almost 9 months now, the Delhi police have given no statement but the BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi is holding a press conference. He is telling stories of different NGOs, he knows everything... There was no investigation for 10 months but now 15 days before the elections, they are narrating fabricated stories...," AAP MP Sanjay Singh said.

<h2>What did the Delhi police say?</h2>
The Delhi police on Tuesday said that the Class 12th student who was held for allegedly sending bomb threat emails to over 400 schools in Delhi was linked to an NGO that was linked to a political party.
"We were tracking e-mails and because of a virtual private network (VPN), it was difficult to track the origins. We also had to ascertain whether there was a terror angle to it," Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Oder) Madhup Tewari said at a press conference, according to news agency PTI reports.
"Our teams tracked the minor after recent e-mails on January 8. As the e-mail sender was a juvenile, the team took his laptop and mobile phone for a forensic examination," Tewari said.
&ldquo;The emails were sent in a very sophisticated manner, including the use of VPNs. Hence, we had difficulties in tracing the emails," he further added.

Delhi Elections: AAP vs BJP poster war intensifies

As the Delhi elections approach, the political battle between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has taken centre stage on social media. Both parties have been using posters and videos to criticise each other, escalating the tension in the run-up to the polls. &nbsp;
<h2>BJP portrays Kejriwal as 'Mogambo' &nbsp;</h2>
The BJP released a controversial poster on Monday (Jan 13), depicting Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi's former chief minister, as the iconic Bollywood villain "Mogambo" from the film Mr India. The party accused the AAP of being hostile toward the Purvanchal region.&nbsp;

Delhi polls: BJP, AAP intensify poster-video war ahead of elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday (Jan 9) accused the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi of aiding Rohingyas by adding them to the voters list of Delhi and attempting to change the demography of the city.
Speaking to the news agency ANI, BJP leader Kapil Mishra said, "We have released a video, in which, a Rohingya infiltrator is himself saying that $116 (Rs 10,000) ration, Jal Board water and electricity, everything is being provided by the people of Amanatullah Khan (AAP MLA)."

"This video evidence shows that Rohingya infiltrators are being added to the voters' list and an attempt is being made to change the demography of Delhi," Mishra added.
<h2>'AAP is supporting Bangladeshi infiltrators'</h2>
Hours after Mishra's remarks, senior BJP leader and former Union minister Smriti Irani accused the AAP of staying silent on such issues (in this case infiltration) related to national security.
"Who are those infiltrators who want to weaken the democratic structure of our country by making fake voter cards? Why are Aam Aadmi Party MLAs not coordinating with the investigating agencies? Aam Aadmi Party is standing in support of Bangladeshi infiltrators," Irani said during a press conference.
"Two AAP MLAs&mdash;Mohinder Goyal and Jai Bhagwan Upkar&mdash;have been involved in the conspiracy to make fake Aadhar cards for Bangladeshi infiltrators," she added.
The Delhi Police had issued notices to Mohinder Goyal and his staff in connection with the discovery of fake documents during a recent crackdown on illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.&nbsp;

On Saturday, BJP leader Ramesh Bhiduri alleged that Rohingyas and Bangladeshi infiltrators were settled in Delhi with the support of parties like Congress, AAP and Trinamool Congress (TMC).

Delhi polls: BJP accuses AAP of aiding Rohingyas by adding them to voters' list

The BJP and AAP have launched a poster war ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, targeting each other's leaders with sharp political jibes. Watch this report for more details!

BJP and AAP engage in a fierce poster war before Delhi elections

Delhi Police and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced off on Wednesday outside the official residence of Delhi Chief Minister. AAP leaders Saurabh Bharadwaj and Sanjay Singh clashed with police officers after being stopped from entering the premises to counter the allegations made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The BJP had accused former CM Arvind Kejriwal of extravagant renovations at his residence, claiming it had been transformed into a "Sheesh Mahal" featuring a swimming pool, costly commode, and even a minibar. In response, Bharadwaj and Singh, alongside members of the media, attempted to enter the property to refute these allegations. However, the heavy police security deployment and barricades stopped them, leading to a heated exchange.
<h2>AAP leaders protest outside the CM&rsquo;s residence</h2>
After being denied entry, the AAP leaders staged a "dharna" (sit-in) outside the residence. Addressing the media, Sanjay Singh said, &ldquo;BJP's lies and propaganda have been exposed today. For months, BJP leaders have claimed there is a golden toilet, swimming pool, and mini-bar in the CM&rsquo;s residence. Today, I brought the media here, but water cannons and police have been deployed. Are we terrorists?&rdquo;

Saurabh Bharadwaj added that both police and Public Works Department (PWD) officials told them they were acting on orders from higher authorities to prevent entry. He said, &ldquo;Every day, BJP has been releasing videos and photos of the residence. We came with the media to see the residence, but three layers of barricades have been set up to block us. If we were allowed in, the truth would have been revealed. Where are the golden toilets and swimming pool they claim exist?&rdquo;
Bharadwaj also questioned the BJP&rsquo;s motives, comparing the alleged Rs 33 crore spent on Kejriwal&rsquo;s residence to the Rs 2,700 crore being spent on the Prime Minister&rsquo;s new residence. He said, &ldquo;Both were built during the COVID-19 pandemic with taxpayer money. Let the public see both. The BJP wants to hide the PM&rsquo;s residence, but we demand transparency for both houses.&rdquo;

The BJP had earlier shared videos of the Chief Minister&rsquo;s residence, questioning the source of funding for the alleged luxury renovations. Singh had previously invited BJP leaders and the media to visit the residence to verify the claims, calling the allegations baseless.
This development comes as Delhi heads into Assembly elections on February 5, with results to be announced on February 8.

AAP threatens to oust Congress from I.N.D.I.A opposition bloc

In what comes as a sign of a major rift in India&rsquo;s opposition INDIA bloc, Delhi&rsquo;s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) threatened Thursday (Dec 26) to seek Congress&rsquo;s removal from the alliance if it fails to act against the chief of its Delhi party unit. The AAP also accused Congress, considered the main opposition party in the country, of helping the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming assembly elections in the national capital.
<h2>AAP vs Congress</h2>
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said Congress&rsquo;s main agenda was to help the BJP win elections, accusing its Delhi chief Ajay Maken of labelling AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal as anti-national.
"Congress is doing everything to ensure that the BJP benefits in the election. Ajay Maken reads the BJP script, makes statements at the BJP's behest, and targets AAP leaders on BJP's instructions. And yesterday, he crossed all limits and called our leader Arvind Kejriwal anti-national," Singh said. &ldquo;The Congress or Ajay Maken have never called any BJP leader in Delhi anti-national," the AAP MP added.

It is to be noted that the AAP and Congress had forged a pre-poll alliance for the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year. However, the alliance fell flat and failed to perform as the BJP swept all the seven parliamentary seats in Delhi.
Singh added that AAP wanted to have an alliance with Congress in the Haryana assembly elections, but the grand old party didn't agree. "But the Congress disagreed. So we fought the election but did not utter an inappropriate word for Congress or its leaders. Show us one statement," said Singh.
<h2>What did Ajay Maken say?</h2>
It is to be noted that Congress&rsquo;s Ajay Maken released a 12-point "white paper" on Wednesday (Dec 25), accusing Kejriwal of not fulfilling the promise of setting up a Janlokpal in Delhi. "If there is one word to describe former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal here then it would be Farziwal," he said. "If anyone is the king of fraud in the entire country then it is Kejriwal and that is why we have come here with a white paper on the Kejriwal government and also on the BJP government at the Centre," Maken added.

Watch | Macron Expected to Appoint New French PM "In Delhi, AAP will contest alone. We are capable of fighting the overconfident Congress and arrogant BJP alone," AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar said. The party further blamed "overconfident" Congress for not taking alliance partners seriously in Haryana and ultimately facing a rout due to its overconfidence. "The Congress has had zero seats in the Delhi assembly for the past 10 years, yet AAP gave Congress three seats in the Lok Sabha polls; still they did not feel necessary to take allies along in Haryana," Kakkar said. Kakkar claimed that Congress thwarted all efforts by the INDIA bloc to forge an alliance in Haryana and "didn't feel it necessary to take its ally along with them." The AAP and Congress failed to stitch up a pre-poll alliance in Haryana due to differences over seat sharing. While the AAP lost all the seats it contested in Haryana, the Congress fell well short of the majority mark, as the ruling BJP returned to power in the state for a third consecutive time. The AAP and the Congress had fought Lok Sabha elections together in Haryana. In the election held earlier in the year, the AAP lost the sole seat it contested and the Congress won five out of 10 seats. Kakkar attributed the AAP's winning one seat in the Jammu and Kashmir to the party's development-driven politics. Congress releases first list of 21 candidates for Delhi Assembly polls, pits Sandeep Dixit against Kejriwal

The Union Cabinet of India on Thursday (Dec 12) reportedly approved the 'One Nation One Election' bill, which allows simultaneous Lok Sabha and state polls. The approved bill is likely to be introduced in the ongoing winter session of the Indian parliament. The bill was one of the key promises made by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in its Lok Sabha election manifesto in 2024.&nbsp;

The bill's approval comes after the Indian government accepted the recommendations of the high-level committee led by former Indian president Ram Nath Kovind in September. The committee has stressed the need to conduct simultaneous polls for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies.&nbsp;

Hailing the proposal, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "The Cabinet has accepted the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections".&nbsp;
