Dadasaheb Phalke Award: Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty expressed gratitude for receiving India's highest honour for films, the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. On Monday, I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Chakraborty, a prominent face of Indian cinema, will be the recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year.

Mithun Chakraborty to receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award 

Soon after Mithun Chakraborty spoke to news agency ANI and said he did not know how to react to the news. "I don't have words. Neither I can laugh nor cry. This is such a big thing... I belong to a blind lane in Kolkata. For a man to get such an honour who has risen from the footpaths of Kolkata...it's such a huge honour. I could not have imagined this. I am extremely happy. I dedicate this to my family and my fans across the world."

Chakraborty will be honoured at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony which will be held on October 8 in New Delhi. 

Chakraborty has had a career spanned nearly 5 decades and has won the prestigious National Film Award three times including the Best Actor award for his debut feature film Mrigaya in 1976.

Chakraborty, whose real name is Gourang Chakraborty, is an alumnus of Pune's Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and he has predominantly worked in Hindi and Bengali cinema.

Calling the actor a 'cultural icon', Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to congratulate Chakraborty for the big honour. "Delighted that Shri Mithun Chakraborty Ji has been conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, recognizing his unparalleled contributions to Indian cinema. He is a cultural icon, admired across generations for his versatile performances. Congratulations and best wishes to him."
