Ahead of the second and penultimate Test versus India, in Pune, New Zealand have been dealt with a big setback as star batter Kane Williamson continues to sit out. Williamson will miss the penultimate contest as well due to a groin strain, which made him miss the series opener (won by the visitors by eight wickets in Bengaluru).
New Zealand coach Gary Stead gave an update on Williamson, confirming that while the 33-year-old veteran batter has made significant progress in his rehabilitation, he won’t be fit in time for the second Test, which gets underway in Pune on Thursday (Oct 24).
Stead said in a statement issued by New Zealand Cricket, "We're monitoring Kane, and he's tracking in the right direction but isn't yet 100% fit. We’re hopeful to see further improvement over the coming days and have him available for the third Test. We’ll give him as much time as possible to get himself ready, but we’re taking a cautious approach."
Williamson, with 8,881 Test runs, has played eight Tests in India, scoring 503 runs at an average of 33.53 with one hundred and three fifties. His comeback would be keenly awaited by the Tom Latham-led side before the third and final Test, in Mumbai starting on Nov 1.
In Williamson's absence, Latham & Co. beat India by eight wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the series opener in Bengaluru. In a rain-marred contest, NZ rode on pacer Matt Henry's 5 for 15 as India bundled out for 46 after opting to bat first on Day 2 (the opening day was washed out). From thereon, Rachin Ravindra's 134, Devon Conway's 91 and Tim Southee's 65 enabled visitors to post 402 and take a big 356-run lead. Although India fought back really well and posted 462, courtesy of Sarfaraz Khan's 150 and Rishabh Pant's 99, they managed to give a paltry 107-run target. On the final day, Kiwis chased it down with eight wickets in hand.
