Team India will step into the final of the T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday (Mar 8) as they take on New Zealand in the summit clash. The event at the Narendra Modi Stadium is likely to raise eyebrows, as India has two weak spots to address, with Abhishek Sharma and Varun Chakaravarthy out of form. However, it is the latter’s position that looks in jeopardy as Team India might do the unthinkable and bring in Kuldeep Yadav.
Kuldeep in, Varun out for T20 World Cup final?
So far in the T20 World Cup, Varun has scalped 13 wickets and on paper, it looks like a good return for the Indian team’s investment. However, it is Varun’s predictable nature with the ball that could see him walk the flame for a place in the Playing XI. In his last four innings with the ball, he has been smashed for a combined 186 runs while scalping just four wickets. ALSO READ | From Chris Gayle to Brendon McCullum, 5 batters to score fastest T20 World Cup hundreds Varun’s return of 186/4 in 16 overs has seen him attract critics and could face the heat in the final. They have enjoyed a stellar run in the tournament, having lost only one match so far, which was against South Africa in the Super 8. India are also bidding to become the first team to defend their T20 World Cup title, which they also won in 2024.

Varun Chakaravarthy's return of 186/4 in 16 overs has seen him attract critics and could face the heat in the final. His economy rate has become a huge concern for the team management considering India have looted runs against Zimbabwe and England in their recent encounters.

His innings was filled with control, patience, and timely attacking shots. Kohli kept India in the hunt even as wickets continued to fall at the other end. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana provided brief support, but the required run rate kept increasing. Once Kohli was dismissed late in the innings, India’s chances faded quickly. The team was eventually bowled out for 296 in 46 overs. The loss not only sealed the series for New Zealand but also marked a rare and memorable achievement for them on Indian soil. For India, it was a reminder that strong individual performances need solid team efforts to secure victories.

IND vs NZ: Virat Kohli’s hundred goes in vain as New Zealand win in Indore to clinch ODI series

India’s Virat Kohli continued his superb form on Sunday (Jan 18) as he slammed his first hundred of 2026 at the Holkar Stadium in Indore. Having been on a fluent run of form in 2025, Virat had narrowly missed out on a hundred in Vadodara but made up for it in Indore. The ton was his 54th in the ODI format and 85th overall, highlighting his legacy as one of the greatest players of all time. Once again, just when India looked down and out at 71/4, Virat, who scored a 108-ball 124 with 10 fours and three sixes, gave India hope with an 88-run stand for the fifth wicket with Nitish Kumar Reddy and a 99-run stand for the seventh wicket with Harshit Rana. This is Virat's 85th international century, and the chase for Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar's record of 100 international centuries continues. Also, this is Virat's 54th ODI ton, a record-extending one. This is the star batter's seventh ODI ton against New Zealand in 36 innings, the most by a batter against the Kiwis in the format.
