<h2>Shami helps India cruise past New Zealand</h2>

Having set a target of 398, New Zealand did not have the best starts and were reduced to 39/2 before skipper Kane Williamson (69) and Daryl Mitchell (134) brought Kiwis back into the game. Both openers, Rachin Ravindra (13) and Devon Conway (13) departed early leaving plenty of work to be done. However, Mitchell and Williamson then built an 181-run partnership for the third wicket before Shami came back to haunt the Kiwis.

After Williamson’s departure, New Zealand lost wickets at regular intervals while Shami enjoyed another stellar outing with the ball. He helped India clean up the tail as New Zealand were bowled out for 327 in a marathon run chase at the Wankhede Stadium. Glenn Phillips showed little resilience with a 41-run knock, but India won the match by 70 runs. Shami ended with figures of 57/7 while Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Kuldeep Yadav ended with one wicket each.

He also surpassed Sachin’s tally of 673 runs in a single edition of the ODI World Cup and now has 711 runs with a match still to go.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has asserted that 'anything can happen' in the knockout stage as the Blackcaps get ready to face an unbeaten India in the first semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2023 on November 15. Notably, it was New Zealand who had beaten an undefeated India in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final.

This time though, India are as dominant as ever and have already beaten New Zealand in the group stage. Williamson conceded that India have been playing exceptional cricket and he doesn't mind being the underdog in the match-up.

"The underdog thing - from what you guys [the press] write, I don't think it has changed too much. But that's fine, and India have been exceptional: one of, if not the best team going around, and playing cricket that matches that.

"But we know as well, on our day, when we play our best cricket, it certainly gives us the best chance. And, come finals time, anything can happen… It's very much a focus on our cricket again: we've played some good cricket throughout, we've had a couple of narrow losses and a few wins along the way which have put us in this position we're in," Williamson said on the eve of the match in Mumbai.

The NZ skipper is also expecting a fairly blue crowd at the Wankhede Stadium for the match against the home team who look primed to win the whole thing.

"We're expecting a fairly blue crowd that will be supporting their team and no doubt, they'll be very passionate about that," Williamson said.

On paper, India look like the much-balanced side of the two and that has reflected in the results in the group stage. While India muscled their way through to reach the knockouts, New Zealand huffed and puffed their way here.&nbsp;

<h2>Virat reflects on special achievement</h2>

“I said in Kolkata, the great man (Sachin Tendulkar) just congratulated me. All this feels like a dream, too good to be true. Feels surreal for me. Again a big game today, I had to play the role I have played throughout the tournament so that the guys around me can go and express themselves. Just glad everything came together so nicely and we put up a great total on the board as well,” Virat said after achieving the feat of 50 ODI hundreds.

In the 42nd over, Virat scored a brace which saw him reach the pinnacle of his ODI career. The feat now sees him at the top of the list with the most ODI hundreds followed by Sachin with 49 while another Mumbai-based batter and India skipper Rohit Sharma sits third with 31. He is followed by Ricky Ponting and Sanath Jayasuriya with 30 and 28 respectively.

“I have been given a role this tournament and I have been trying to play that to the best of my abilities - try to dig deep and bat long so the guys around me can play around me and have that confidence in the later overs where I can dominate with the bat as well,” Virat added.

<h2>Shubman, Rohit get India going&nbsp;</h2>

Having won the toss, the Indian team made a solid start with skipper Rohit in an attacking mood that saw him take apart the Kiwi&nbsp;bowling lineup. Rohit scored a quickfire 47 off just 29 that consisted of 4 fours and 4 sixes. The local boy looked in good nick while Gill played the defensive role in the partnership. The duo stitched a partnership of 71 runs for the opening wicket before Rohit was caught by the mid-off fielder while he tried playing another big shot.

India later suffered a blow as Shubman Gill had to walk off with cramps in his legs. Batting on 79, he had to leave the field as he was unable to bat in the challenging heat of Mumbai. He was retired hurt and could still come back to complete his hundred later in the innings with India in a solid position in the contest.

ODI World Cup: Rohit, Gill get India to perfect start as hosts shrug off pressure to avoid 2019 repeat

Amid the pitch controversy surrounding the India vs New Zealand semifinal, Australian captain Pat Cummins has given his say on the matter. Quizzed&nbsp;on the eve of his team's knockout game against South Africa, Cummins said he had 'faith' in ICC.

The last 24 hours leading to the India vs New Zealand match were marred by accusations from the international media that BCCI had doctored the pitch to suit the Indian team's strengths.&nbsp;

"Yeah, I saw that (the report)...obviously ICC have an independent pitch curator who manages that so I'm sure they are all over making sure it's fair for both teams," said Cummins.&nbsp;

"So far this tournament that we've played on, I've not seen any issue," added Cummins.&nbsp;

According to reports, a fresh pitch was originally planned to be used&nbsp;for the semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. However, since India qualified for the first semifinal by topping the group stage, a used surface that assists the home team's spinners was employed for use, leading to accusations of pitch alteration.

An ESNPcricinfo report, citing a source said:&nbsp;"6-8-6-8-7 was the planned rotation at Wankhede. 6-8-6-8 is what has been used so far."

The pitch 6 is the same one on which South Africa beat England by 229 runs while India dismantled Sri Lanka for just 55 runs.

<h2>No rule broken, as per ICC regulations&nbsp;</h2>

While a section of media created furore regarding the fresh pitch, no ICC regulation states&nbsp;that knockout matches must be played on a fresh surface.&nbsp;

"It is expected that venues that are allocated the responsibility of hosting a match will present the best possible pitch and outfield conditions for that match," reads the ICC regulation.&nbsp;

Amid the pitch controversy surrounding the India vs New Zealand semifinal, Australian captain Pat Cummins has given his say on the matter. Quizzed on the eve of his team's knockout game against South Africa, Cummins said he had 'faith' in ICC. The last 24 hours leading to the India vs New Zealand match were marred by accusations from the international media that BCCI had doctored the pitch to suit the Indian team's strengths. "Yeah, I saw that (the report)...obviously ICC have an independent pitch curator who manages that so I'm sure they are all over making sure it's fair for both teams," said Cummins. "So far this tournament that we've played on, I've not seen any issue," added Cummins. According to reports, a fresh pitch was originally planned to be used for the semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. However, since India qualified for the first semifinal by topping the group stage, a used surface that assists the home team's spinners was employed for use, leading to accusations of pitch alteration. An ESNPcricinfo report, citing a source said: "6-8-6-8-7 was the planned rotation at Wankhede. 6-8-6-8 is what has been used so far." The pitch 6 is the same one on which South Africa beat England by 229 runs while India dismantled Sri Lanka for just 55 runs. No rule broken, as per ICC regulations While a section of media created furore regarding the fresh pitch, no ICC regulation states that knockout matches must be played on a fresh surface. "It is expected that venues that are allocated the responsibility of hosting a match will present the best possible pitch and outfield conditions for that match," reads the ICC regulation. ODI World Cup 2023: India vs New Zealand semi-final to be played on used pitch instead of fresh surface

Four years is a long time for an ordinary person, not so much for an Indian cricket fan who has been counting the days to avenge a bitter loss that left deep, painful scars. The build up has been immaculate, the battle lines already drawn and now is the time to witness the action unfold on the pitch.

India take on New Zealand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday (Nov 15) in the World Cup semifinal which appears to have all the makings of an all-timer.&nbsp;

India arrive on the ultimate stage on the back of a superlative league stage campaign where almost every opposition was annihilated with reckless abandon. India looked imperious, some might say, invincible at times - and it is not without any merit. Bar the first match against Australia where India lost three quick wickets while chasing, none of the other matches forced the men-in-blue to shift out of second gear.&nbsp;

As for New Zealand, a start that was almost spotless (four wins on the bounce) was splashed with blemishes by the end of the ninth league game when the Kiwis just about managed to lock in a knockout spot. Injuries and lack of profiles needed for the perfect balance have been missing and captain Kane Williamson understands it better than most.&nbsp;

Despite the lop-sidedness of the squad and playing in front of a blue army, no one can discount Williamson's men, after all Kiwis have the knack of turning up against India on the big stage. The good guys of cricket have always been a tough nut to crack and the hosts understand that just one slip-up and all the hard work will come undone. Sets us up for a mouthwatering clash. Expect a corker of a game.&nbsp;

On paper, India look the much balanced side of the two and that has reflected in the results in the group stage. While India muscled its way through to reach the knockouts, New Zealand huffed and puffed their way here. While the horrors from four years ago remain, India appear well set to handle the Kiwi challenge this time around.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the teams say?</h2>

"I don't think there's so much time to think about it. The focus is on the game, and what we have in hand tomorrow. I seriously have no time to think about my journey, what it has been in the past. Probably after 19 November, I will think about it. Right now, it is just business and pure business of getting the job done for the team," Indian captain Rohit Sharma told reporters on the eve of the match.

"We are expecting a fairly blue crowd that will be supporting their team. No doubt, they will be very passionate about that. At the same time, as players, when you get opportunities to play in front of those crowds as well, it's special. We remember over the years, at a number of different venues, we have played in front of fans who are not supporting us."

He has been charged for cheating and other offences under sections 420 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code," one of the officials was quoted as saying by Times of India. World Cup 2023: Mumbai police arrest one for black marketing India-New Zealand semifinal tickets

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is all set to roll up his sleeves for the first ODI World Cup semifinal on Wednesday (Nov 15) as his team meets hosts India in the semifinal&nbsp;at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. New Zealand, who have been a hoodoo team for Rohit Sharma’s men, will look to cause an upset as they eye a third consecutive final in the 50-over World Cup. For India, revenge will be on the menu card, having lost to New Zealand in the 2019 edition semifinal while also losing the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2021.

<h2>Williamson expects big home support</h2>

"We are expecting a fairly blue crowd that will be supporting their team. No doubt, they will be very passionate about that. At the same time, as players, when you get opportunities to play in front of those crowds as well, it's special. We remember over the years, at a number of different venues, we have played in front of fans who are not supporting us. We have a small country that doesn't always fill out the stadiums, but you still appreciate the atmosphere that it brings. I am sure it will be a good one tomorrow,” Williamson said during the press conference on Tuesday.

India will have momentum on their side having won all the nine fixtures in the league stage while New Zealand will be aware of the recent threat. The sides met earlier in the campaign in Dharamsala where the Blackcaps were beaten comprehensively after Virat Kohli led the chase. India won the match by four wickets while New Zealand later lost momentum as they failed to win matches having lost to Australia, South Africa, and Pakistan.

Wednesday’s encounter will be crucial for both sides and India will be aware of not repeating the mistakes from the 2019 edition. As things stand, India could field an unchanged side consisting of Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah at the peak of the attack. The likes of Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and local boy Rohit Sharma should also provide the necessary width with the bat.

The match will start at 2:00 PM IST with the toss taking place at 1:30 PM at the Wankhede Stadium.

ODI World Cup 2023: Kane Williamson ready to roll up sleeves vs India, expects 'fairly blue crowd' at Wankhede

Four teams are just two steps away from lifting the ODI World Cup trophy as hosts India, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand scramble for a place in Sunday’s final. While India is waiting&nbsp;to exact revenge from New Zealand, having lost in the 2019 edition semis, South Africa will lock horns with five-time champions Australia in Kolkata. However, the latter clash could be affected by bad weather conditions with rain expected to play spoilsport at the Eden Gardens. So what will happen and who will advance to the final if rain plays a party spoiler in either contest?

<h2>What are the scenarios?</h2>

As things stand, the umpires will prioritise playing the entire 100-over contest on the scheduled dates, which are&nbsp;Wednesday (Semifinal 1) and Thursday (Semifinal 2) respectively. However, if rain plays spoilsport the match could be extended to a reserve day depending on different scenarios. While the weather forecast for India vs New Zealand in Mumbai is good, the same can’t be said for the South Africa vs Australia match in Kolkata as weather is expected to hinder play.

As mentioned, the match is prioritised to be finished on the scheduled date so the umpires can reduce the number of overs to guarantee a result. In case 20 overs are not completed in the second innings (minimum requirement for a match to be completed) and rain plays spoilsport, the umpires will have two calls to make.

Scenario 1 – If the match does not start before the completion of the 20th over in the second innings, then it will be completed on the reserve day with full 50 overs on play.

Scenario 2 – However, if the match starts and 20 overs are completed and rain interrupts then the match will start on reserve day with reduced overs.

<h2>What if semifinal match is abandoned?</h2>

If both teams fail to play 20 overs (including the reserve day) and rain plays spoilsport, then the match will be abandoned. In this case, teams ranked higher in the league stage will advance to the final which will see India and South Africa carry significant advantages. However, India will be aware of the reserve day scenarios against New Zealand having lost the ODI World Cup semifinal in 2019 and the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2021 as they will look to get the job done at the earliest.

David Beckham to attend India vs New Zealand ODI World Cup semifinal clash at Wankhede Stadium

India and New Zealand are back facing each other in the World Cup 2023, this time in the semis scheduled on Wednesday (Nov 15) in Mumbai. Having fared against each other in the knockouts the last time in 2019, New Zealand won the two-day rain-hit match in Manchester by 18 runs. Speaking ahead of the marquee clash, spinner Kuldeep Yadav remains unfazed by records and results as India looks strong to weather the Kiwi storm this time.

While New Zealand entered the final top 4 on the back of a series of losses in the second half of the tournament, the hosts India will walk into the contest as hot favourites, remaining unbeaten in the competition thus far.&nbsp;

Banking on the rhythm and momentum India is carrying heading into yet another World Cup knockout stage, Kuldeep feels there is no point in worrying about what happened in the past.

“The 2019 semifinal was four years ago,” Kuldeep told reporters after the win over the Netherlands in Bengaluru.&nbsp;

“We have played a lot of bilateral series after that, so we know the conditions (in India) and so do they. Our preparation has been good, and we have been able to play good cricket throughout the tournament.”

“So, we expect to continue in the same vein in the next match as well,” he added.

Although the seam bowlers made headlines with stunning performances in nine contested matches, Kuldeep had his share of success, picking 14 wickets from nine games. Alongside Ravindra Jadeja, also among the wickets in this edition, Kuldeep will hold the key to India’s success in the middle overs against New Zealand.

“I just work on my rhythm and strengths and focus on how batsmen are trying to play me. My aim is to land the ball on the good length area as much as possible,” Kuldeep explained.&nbsp;

“I just keep focusing on the process rather than on wickets. Hopefully, it will work in the next match also,” he added.

<h2>All set for the knockout stage</h2>

While India and New Zealand are slated to face off in the first semis, Australia and South Africa will square off in the repeat of the 1999 and 2007 semis at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Where Australia are five-time winners, having last won eight years ago at home in 2015, India previously clinched the CWC trophy 12 years ago in 2011. New Zealand and South Africa are yet to win a World Cup title.

Former Indian men's cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri has played down the concerns of fans after the team was drawn to face New Zealand in the World Cup semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai next week.

Shastri said India had already beaten New Zealand in the World Cup and that past records do not matter much on the day.&nbsp;

"It's water under the bridge. Why does India have to look back on that loss? We've already beaten them in this World Cup. Do hell with that," Shastri told host broadcaster Star Sports.&nbsp;

Former Indian cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar also chimed on the topic and said India were looking much more ominous than New Zealand this time.&nbsp;

"India were doing well in that tournament as well. But on that fateful day, things went wrong, and India's top order crumbled. This time India are much stronger, no real weakness. Things are different now," Manjrekar said.

World Cup 2023: 'Hell with that', Ravi Shastri plays down concerns of repeat of 2019 against New Zealand

Veteran Indian stumper&nbsp;Dinesh Karthik made a bold claim that Rohit Sharma-led India is the 'strongest team that India has had in ODIs'. At present, Rohit &amp; Co. are having a dream run in the ongoing ten-team home ODI World Cup with eight wins on the trot. Ahead of their last league game, versus the Netherlands on Sunday (Nov 12) in Bengaluru, Karthik heaped praise on the current ODI team and made a huge statement.

<h2>'There's no Indian team that....'</h2>

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik said, "I'm going out on a limb to say this but this Indian team is probably the strongest team that India has ever had in ODIs. In World Cups for sure. There's no Indian team that has dominated like this current 2023 team. You have to pit it against other Indian teams which have done very well but it will run other teams very close to it being the greatest ODI team ever in terms of performances and pressure."

So far in the ODI WC, India have beaten the likes of five-time champions Australia, Afghanistan, arch-rivals Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand, England, Sri Lanka and South Africa and will look to make it nine wins in a row to end the league stage and enter the semi-finals on a high. They have clicked in every department and weathered all storms, battling injuries etc., to keep going forward.&nbsp;

The home side are most likely to face New Zealand in the first semi-final, in Mumbai, on Wednesday (Nov 15) with Australia and South Africa facing each other in the second semi-final a day after, in Kolkata. Only Pakistan have an outside chance to topple the Kiwis and enter the semis, but that is highly unlikely.

Opening up on a possible semi-final versus New Zealand, Karthik spoke on the conditions and India's probable XI which will take the field&nbsp;at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. In this regard, he said, "It's in Mumbai, the first big decision, if they win the toss, will be if they would bat first or bowl first because there will be dew but then they will have to get past that first spell. The first 10 overs the ball swings and moves. There's no question what the level is going to be till the finals. It's going to be the same XI. Every player has ticked the box and is looking good for the semis."

CWC 2023: This is the strongest Indian ODI team ever - Dinesh Karthik's BOLD claim

New Zealand returned to winning ways with a five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in match 41 of the ODI World Cup on Thursday (Nov 9) in Bengaluru. In need of a win, the Kane Williamson-led Black Caps romped past the hapless Lankans, courtesy of Trent Boult's 3 for 37, to chase down a paltry 172 in 23.2&nbsp;overs to attain a big win and further bolster their Net Run Rate (NRR).&nbsp;&nbsp;

With 10 points, NZ are now on the fourth place and almost assured of a semi-final berth as other contenders Pakistan and Afghanistan are in need of a miraculous win to bring NZ down in the overall standings. With a victory over SL, Williamson &amp; Co. are set to meet hosts India in the first semi-final whereas it will be South Africa vs Australia in the second semi-final, next week. Ahead of the likely India vs New Zealand semi-final clash, in Mumbai on Wednesday (Nov&nbsp;15), former England pacer Steve Harmison said that Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will be under pressure facing the Black Caps (who also defeated them in the semi-final face-off in the 2019 edition).

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Harmison said, "A quality side like New Zealand, you can never write them off. Out of the three teams that are in the semi-finals with India, I've got a funny feeling that they are the one team that India wouldn't want to play because they have character. They are all coming back to fitness."

<h2>'If India had one side they didn't want to play in the semi-final, it would be New Zealand'</h2>

He added, "I wouldn't say they are all in prime form. But on the big stage, India and New Zealand have been here before. All the pressure is now on India. Indian cricketers are used to playing under pressure so I don’t think that will harm them too much. If India had one side they didn't want to play in the semi-final, it would be New Zealand."

India and New Zealand met each other early in the tournament, on Oct 22, in Dharamsala with the home team beating the Kiwis by four wickets in pursuit of 274. Will the script remain the same for India or will NZ once again stun India in a crucial ICC encounter? Only time will tell.

New Zealand returned to winning ways with a five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in match 41 of the ODI World Cup on Thursday (Nov 9) in Bengaluru. NZ would be the team that India wouldn't want to play in ODI WC semi-final, feels former England pacer

New Zealand batter Rachin Ravindra is having a dream ODI World Cup 2023 with over 400 runs to his name already. The Kiwi batter amazed the fans with century in the first game of the tournament itself where his 123 helped the Blackcaps beat defending champions England.

The left-hand batter played another masterful innings against Australia on October 28 in Dharamsala as his 89-ball 116 almost got New Zealand over the 389-run target. While the Kiwis lost the game by five runs, Ravindra was happy to contribute.

“I guess you probably look at it, at the start I would be obviously very grateful to be here and how things have worked out," Ravindra said after the game.

“We're in a position as a team to hopefully push on and keep winning games and I guess individually it’s runs for the team so I'm happy to be able to contribute.”

The batter, who has roots in India, was supported by crowd throughout the game and said that it was very special to see that kind of response.

“I think this was probably one of the best crowds we've played in India and having that sort of fanfare and the response, like how they responded to the game, was pretty special.

“As a kid you always dream of the crowd chanting your name and it was cool to see them do that on multiple occasions, even when Aussie were batting, and then when Neesh (Neesham) did his thing at the end.

“I think it's always special, you sort of soak in those moments and hopefully we never really take them for granted,” he said.

On being asked if it was special to perform and score runs before Indians fans, the batter said that he's proud of his heritage but he's 100% Kiwi.

“I've been asked this question a lot, but I guess I'm 100% Kiwi and I'm also very proud of my Indian heritage. But I guess it's that I’m proud to be able to do it in the country where my parents were born and where they grew up and where a lot of my family is," Ravindra said.

With four wins in six games, New Zealand sit third on the points after South Africa and India.

ODI World Cup 2023: 'I'm proud but...,' says New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra on performing before Indian fans

Mohammed Shami grabbed the limelight with his five-wicket haul against New Zealand in Dharamsala on Sunday. But, he was benched for four straight games in this World Cup as team management decided against playing four front-line bowlers. However, following an injury to Hardik Pandya, Shami got roped in. Courtesy of his second CWC five-for, India defeated the Kiwis in this tournament for the first time since 2003.

Considering India opted for a different template of playing an all-rounder at number eight instead of their usual seven-four combination, Shami’s exclusion from the playing XI from day one raised quite a few eyebrows. Although India kept winning with the new formation, many pundits asked for Shami’s inclusion, given his incredible World Cup record.

The wish came true in the marquee clash against New Zealand, as he sealed his moment with a match-winning performance.

Speaking to the media after India’s fifth straight win in World Cup 2023, Shami opened up on being benched for four games, saying the team must come first. He added if, with him sitting out, India is finding the right balance that helps them beat their opposition, then he is okay with it.

"When you come back after a long time to the XI, it is important to get confidence early. That first game helped me get that confidence. It's not too hard (waiting by the sidelines) if your team is doing well. They are your teammates, and if they are doing well then you should be supporting them. If it's in the team's interest, I'm okay with it," Shami said after the match.

<h2>Shami acknowledges Dharamsala's milestone</h2>

With Shami becoming the first-ever bowler from the country to pick two five-wicket hauls in World Cups (previously picking one against England during the 2019 edition), the India veteran acknowledged the milestone.

"The wickets are important because we were the top 2 teams of the World Cup," Shami added.

Meanwhile, after dismissing New Zealand on 273, India chased down the target with four wickets in hand.&nbsp;

Legendary Virat Kohli was the architect of the chase for the nth time, coming close to equalling Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI hundreds record, but got out five shy of the three-digit mark. His 95 off 104 balls had kept India in the run-chase, while others also chipped in with crucial 30s and 40s.&nbsp;

With one foot inside the semis, India’s next challenge is against the defending champions England, on Sunday (Oct 29) in Lucknow.

Virat Kohli masterminds India's run chase against New Zealand in Dharamsala. Here is how fans reacted on X

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir believes that pacer Mohammed Shami should have been a part of the playing XI from the beginning of the ODI World Cup.&nbsp;Shami was the pick of bowlers when India squared up against New Zealand in the top-of-the-table clash against New Zealand on Sunday (Oct 22).

The speedster picked up an impressive five-fer on his World Cup comeback and staked a claim for a permanent spot in the lineup.&nbsp;

“Shami has a different class. The Indian team management need to have a lot of might to keep him out. No doubt India have won four consecutive matches but despite that, Mohammed Shami should have been a part of this playing XI from the start,” Gambhir told host broadcaster Star Sports.&nbsp;

Despite his flawless performance, Gambhir said that Shami might have to sit out the next game when Hardik Pandya gets fit.&nbsp;

“India went with five bowlers on a Dharamsala ground, which is quite difficult for the bowlers, and despite that, if you give your team five wickets, you can understand the level of bowler he is. It needs to be seen how the team management will make him sit out going forward. Will you persist with him once Hardik Pandya comes back?,” Gambhir added.

<h2>Indian team looks for balance&nbsp;</h2>

The Indian team under Rohit Sharma has been opting for complete balance in the playing XI with Pandya forming a vital cog in the machinery. His batting and bowling all-round abilities allow India to walk into a match with four out-and-out bowlers with Ravindra Jadeja acting as the second all-rounder.&nbsp;

However, after Pandya got injured, India had to rejig the playing XI with Mohammed Shami coming in his place and Shardul Thakur making way for Suryakumar Yadav to solidify the batting.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While Shami performed admirably with the ball and allowed India to chase a relatively small total, it also meant that he walked out to bat at no. 8 which doesn't augur well for the team's balance.&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: Gautam Gambhir says this pacer should've been part of India playing XI from start

Rohit Sharma-led India continued their winning run when they locked horns with New Zealand in match 21 of the ICC ODI World Cup, at home, on Sunday (Oct 22) in Dharamsala. Both sides met each other being unbeaten in the ten-team tournament and produced an intense battle, where India eventually went past the Kiwis by four wickets in pursuit of 274. The likes of Mohammed Shami (5 for 54), Ravindra Jadeja (10-0-48-0 and 39 not out), Rohit (46) and Virat Kohli (95) starred in India's fifth win on the trot as they sit pretty at the top with ten points.&nbsp;

After the match, former Indian batter-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar lauded Team India and hailed captain Rohit's fearless approach at the top. Rohit has been in top form in the ODI World Cup, with 311 runs (second-most) and has struck at&nbsp;133.47; going hard at the powerplays. In the game versus the Black Caps, he targetted Matt Henry, in particular, and Trent Boult and never shied away from counterattacking despite being beaten on occasions. As a result, India was 63 for no loss after 10 overs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Thus, Manjrekar said on Star Sports, "The talk was about Trent Boult's swing, and that Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry could trouble the Indian batters a lot on this pitch. I like this Rohit Sharma because India are winning more and winning more convincingly. He scored five centuries in 2019 but India's performance didn't look this convincing. Yes, he is scoring forties but is going after setting a good platform."

After the win over NZ, Rohit said at the post-match presentation, "Good start to the tournament. Job is half done. Important to stay balanced. Not to think too far ahead. Important to stay in the present. Shami took the opportunity with both hands. He has the experience in these conditions and is a class bowler. At one stage, we were looking at 300 plus. Credit to our bowlers at the back end. I am enjoying my batting. Both are different personalities but we (Him and Gill) complement each other. Happy that we won. Nothing much to say. He (Kohli) has done this for us so many years. He backed himself to do the job. Kohli and Jadeja pulled us back when we lost a few wickets in the middle. The fielding is something we pride ourselves on. Today the fielding wasn't clinical. Ravindra Jadeja is one of the best fielders in the world. These things happen. We know that fielding is something that will decide a lot of things going forward. We love travelling and playing in different parts of the game."

India now have some rest before they take on England in Lucknow on Sunday (Oct 29).&nbsp;

Like this Rohit Sharma because India are winning more convincingly in CWC '23, says Sanjay Manjrekar

India continued their unbeaten run in the World Cup by defeating New Zealand&nbsp;in Sunday's (Oct 22) top-of-the-table clash. Chasing a challenging total of 274, India won the contest by four wickets, with Virat Kohli (95) once again anchoring a tricky chase which seemingly helped avenge the agonising loss suffered in the semifinal match on the same stage, four years ago.&nbsp;

Kohli dug in and followed his brilliant hundred against Bangladesh in the previous match by smashing another&nbsp;match-winning knock. The former Indian captain, however, missed out on what would have been his 49th ODI century&nbsp;by a whisker. He was adequately assisted by Ravindra Jadeja (39*) at the back end of the chase as the southpaw reminded his critics that he was still a handful with the bat in the 50-over format.&nbsp;

India were off the blocks in a brisk manner as Rohit Sharma pulverised the NZ&nbsp;bowlers in the first powerplay. The Indian skipper was particularly severe on Matt Henry and raced to 46 in 39 balls before Ferguson stormed in and got him to chop one back to the stumps.&nbsp;

Shubman Gill followed the suit in next over as he thumped the ball straight down the throat of Daryl Mitchell. Shreyas Iyer, in at no.4, once again could not capitalise on a start and compulsively pulled a nothing delivery straight to deep midwicket.&nbsp;

With the chase delicately balanced, India needed World Cup debutant Suryakumar Yadav to hold one end but a breakdown in communication between him and Kohli meant that the Mumbai batter had to depart cheaply.&nbsp;

New Zealand momentarily threatened to take away the game but the experience of Kohli-Jadeja ensured that India reached the victorious end without any other hiccup.&nbsp;

<h2>New Zealand posted a challenging total</h2>

Put into bat first on a sluggish pitch, New Zealand had a wobbly start as Devon Conway departed without troubling the scorers while Will Young was castled by a returning Mohammed Shami. From 19/2 inside the first 10 overs, New Zealand did well to reach 178/3 as Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell joined forces to take the attack back to the Indians.&nbsp;

While Mitchell slammed his fifth ODI century, Ravindra compiled a well-crafted half-century but not before both were given reprieves by the Indian fielders. The men-in-blue had a sorry day in the field as they dropped three catches and indulged in some loose overthrows.&nbsp;

Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja - India's linchpins in the middle overs were taken for plenty by the NZ batters who had a clear game plan. Mitchell took on Yadav from his first over and forced the wrist spinner to think of a different game plan.&nbsp;

When it looked like 2019 WC finalists would pull along to a 300+ total, Shami helped India stage a comeback in the final 10 overs as he returned figures of&nbsp;5-54 in his first appearance at the tournament.

Shami was on a hat-trick averted by Lockie Ferguson but he finally ended Mitchell's marathon knock on the penultimate ball of the innings for his second five-wicket haul in World Cups. New Zealand lost their final wicket on the last ball of the 50th over with Ferguson run out.

With the win, India have knocked New Zealand off the top of the points table and have put one foot in the semifinals. Meanwhile, New Zealand slip to the second spot but still remain firmly in contention of joining India in the knockouts.&nbsp;

World Cup 2023: India outfox New Zealand in top-of-the-table clash, win by 4 wickets

India and New Zealand are the two best-performing teams in World Cup 2023. Following Sunday’s result in Dharamsala, where India ended Kiwi’s winning streak by beating them by four wickets, former cricket and Pakistan great Wasim Akram hailed both teams, saying squads should be like theirs. Akram said India is cruising ahead in this tournament like a train with failed brakes.

"India is like that run-away train that has its brakes failed. They are going that way," said Akram. "They have the weapons, have the merit, the skills and most importantly they know how to execute their plans."

In the clash of the two unbeaten teams (until yesterday), India crossed the winning line, thanks to an all-round show from the bowlers first and then the batters. Returning Mohammed Shami starred in his first game in this competition, picking a five-wicket haul – his second in CWC history, while Virat stood tall during the chase, notching up a match-winning 95.

In Hardik Pandya’s absence, India made two changes, bringing Suryakumar Yadav in for Hardik and playing Mohammed Shami for Shardul Thakur. With the home team returning to their old and usual template of playing with seven batters and four bowlers, they did well against a balanced New Zealand Team, restricting them to under 300 on an even Dharamsala track.&nbsp;

Hailing the changes India made given the opposition and conditions, Akram&nbsp;claimed&nbsp;teams should bring in like-to-like replacements of star players (the way the Indian Team did) to maintain the balance.

"They did one change according to the situation. Squads should be such, like India and New Zealand's, so that if anybody is injured or out of touch or you want to play someone according to opposition or pitch (then you have such resources available). Like India played Shami, Hardik was injured, they dropped Shardul (Thakur), and SKY (Suryakumar Yadav) was brought in as a new batter. Then Shami got a wicket off the first ball of his spell," the veteran seamer added.

<h2>India on top of points table</h2>

With India beating New Zealand, they won their fifth straight match at the World Cup, claiming the top spot on the points table. For them to seal the semis spot, India must at least win one out of their next four matches, and with two wins, they will guarantee their place in the final four.

Indian Team will next face the defending champions England on Sunday (Oct 29) in Lucknow.

World Cup - Squads should be like India and New Zealand’s: Wasim Akram in awe of Dharamsala chase

India beat New Zealand by four wickets in match 21 of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Sunday (Oct 22) in Dharamsala. In a clash of the two unbeaten sides in the ten-team tournament, Rohit Sharma-led India opted to bowl first and rode on Mohammed Shami's 5 for 54 to dismiss the Kiwis for 273 in 50 overs. In reply, India completed the run-chase in 48 overs courtesy of Virat Kohli's 95, Ravindra Jadeja's 39 not out and Rohit's 46. With this win, India remain the only team to be unbeaten in the ten-team tournament whereas the Black Caps conceded their first game after a four-match winning streak.&nbsp;

After the game, Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar was in awe of Rohit-led India and feels 'there is no way that India should not be winning the World Cup'. Lauding Kohli, he said on his YouTube channel, Akhtar said, "He is someone who thrives under pressure. Pressure brings opportunities for him. And opportunities are scoring a hundred, playing match-winning knocks and getting followed on Instagram, and why not? This guy deserves it."

Akhtar emphasised on India's batting line-up and said, "Shubman Gill is enough for this New Zealand team. Had Rohit Sharma not got out casually, he is enough. If KL Rahul goes up the order to 3 or 4, even he is enough. India’s batting lineup is very lengthy.&nbsp;Everyone knows what Kohli did today, but Rahul also took the load. Suryakumar had also done so had he not got out."

Apart from Kohli, Shami -- playing his first game in the CWC 2023 edition -- also made a strong statement by returning with a five-fer. Shami got a game due to Hardik Pandya's injury but Akhtar feels he should be in the playing XI going ahead as well. In this regard, he added,&nbsp;"But in ensuring that New Zealand don’t score 300-350, Shami played a big role. He was a bit expensive, but it’s okay since he dismissed five batters. He has shown his talent and India need to persist with the same bowling attack."

Lastly, Akhtar made a big claim and said, "They have a complete batting and bowling lineup. There is no way that India should not be winning the World Cup."&nbsp;

With India remaining unbeaten after five games and sitting pretty at the top of the points table, Rohit doesn't want the team to lose steam. After the win in Dharamsala, he said at the post-match presentation, "&nbsp;Good start to the tournament. Job is half done. Important to stay balanced. Not to think too far ahead. Important to stay in the present."&nbsp;

India will now host England in match 29 on Oct 29 (Sunday) in Lucknow.&nbsp;

Shami got a game due to Hardik Pandya's injury but Akhtar feels he should be in the playing XI going ahead as well. In this regard, he added, "But in ensuring that New Zealand don’t score 300-350, Shami played a big role. He was a bit expensive, but it’s okay since he dismissed five batters. He has shown his talent and India need to persist with the same bowling attack." Lastly, Akhtar made a big claim and said, "They have a complete batting and bowling lineup. There is no way that India should not be winning the World Cup." With India remaining unbeaten after five games and sitting pretty at the top of the points table, Rohit doesn't want the team to lose steam. After the win in Dharamsala, he said at the post-match presentation, " Good start to the tournament. Job is half done. Important to stay balanced. Not to think too far ahead. Important to stay in the present." India will now host England in match 29 on Oct 29 (Sunday) in Lucknow. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. There is no way that India should not be winning the ODI World Cup: Shoaib Akhtar's BOLD remark

Virat Kohli headlined another run-chase for India in the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition on Sunday (Oct 22) when Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. beat New Zealand by four wickets in pursuit of 274. Facing the Kiwis in match 21 of the 2023 edition, in Dharamsala, India were on the back foot with the visitors 219 for 4. Mohammed Shami's late strikes (5 for 54) dented the Black Caps' progress as they were bundled out for 273 in 50 overs before Kohli (95), captain Rohit (46) and Ravindra Jadeja's 39 not out sealed the deal for India.&nbsp;

Kohli has been in top form in the CWC 2023 edition. After his heroics vs NZ, he is now the leading run-getter (354 runs) in the ten-team tournament in India.&nbsp;He has been exceptional in all five run-chases for India with scores of 85, 55*, 16, 103 and 95. Thus, New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell (who slammed an impressive 130 versus the Men in Blue) lauded the star batter and heaped praise on him after the Dharamsala encounter.&nbsp;

"He's a world-class player and he'll go down as one of the greats of the game for a reason. A very good knock under pressure I thought and although he didn't get 100, he got his team across the line," Mitchell said about Kohli in the post-match press conference.

Mitchell further added, "Look for us as Kiwis, we'll just keep throwing punches, we'll keep trying different things and we'll keep trying to take wickets and I'm just really proud of our bowling unit tonight and how they tried to do that for periods of time and in conditions which probably got better with the dew with the wicket so yeah for us really proud of our efforts and we look forward to taking on the Aussies in just under a week's time."

For India, they have a week off before they take on England in their next outing, in Lucknow on Sunday (Oct 29). On the other hand, the Tom Latham-led Kiwis will now square off with Australia in Dharamsala on Saturday (Oct 28). India, after their first win over NZ in ODI World Cup history since 2003, are at the top of the points table with five successive wins (ten points), closely followed by New Zealand (eight points).
