World Cup 2023: IN PICS - Five top moments from India's emphatic win against New Zealand

India vs England World Cup match was briefly halted after fog engulfed the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium (HPCA) in Dharamsala on Sunday (Oct 22) evening. As the Indian chase was underway, a thick blanket of fog started descending upon the stadium after the 11th over.

Initially, the fog wasn't as thick to halt the proceedings as both teams continued to play. However, during the 16th over, bowled by pacer Lockie Ferguson, umpires decided that conditions were dangerous for the play to continue.

Images and videos going viral on social media showed the stadium completely engulfed by the fog which resulted in reduced visibility. As the umpires suggested that the play be halted, New Zealand players showed visible disappointment as the game was finely in the balance.

The commentators on air said that the players would not come back on the field till the conditions improved. According to the Duckworth-Lewis system, mostly employed in case of rain-induced stoppages, the overs were set to be reduced if the match did not start before 8:36 PM IST.

Shami was only in the team after Hardik Pandya missed out due to injury while Suryakumar Yadav was also brought in to help the batting side.

Shami makes statement return

Down the pecking order, Shami had 32 World Cup wickets but was kept out of the side by experienced Jasprit Bumrah and ever-impressive Mohammed Siraj. However, he grabbed his opportunity with both hands and scalped Will Young (17) on the first ball of his spell. He also played an important role in breaking the Rachin Ravindra (75) and Daryl Mitchell (130) partnership getting the former out when they had stitched 159 runs for the third wicket.

Shami would return to haunt the Kiwis when he scalped Mitchell Santner (1) and Matt Henry (0) on back-to-back balls. He was on a hat-trick in the 48th over but could not get over the line to join the elite company. He later dismissed the impressive Mitchell with Virat Kohli taking a catch in the deep and completing the five-for. It is the third time he has taken a five-for in ODI cricket and continues to impress in his third World Cup stint.

Currently, he has 37 ODI World Cup wickets, third on the list behind Javagal Srinath (44) and Zaheer Khan (44), and could break their record with a swift run. India still have four league matches to play after the New Zealand match with potential semifinal and final also on the cards.

Will Young (17) and Glenn Phillips were the only other batters to get in double figures for New Zealand.

ODI World Cup 2023: Mohammed Shami makes statement return to Team India, scalps five wickets in Dharamsala

Mohammed Shami was a star in the first innings, picking a five-for, while Daryl Mitchell completed his first hundred of this World Cup as New Zealand posted 273 against India in Dharamsala. Rachin Ravindra continued his dream run at the top, hitting a gritty 75 off 87.

After winning the toss, India elected to bowl first, continuing their successful mantra of chasing in this World Cup. In Hardik Pandya’s absence, India brought in an extra batter – Suryakumar Yadav, while the country’s most effective bowler in 50-over World Cups, Mohammed Shami, got his first game in this edition, replacing Shardul Thakur.

Mohammed Siraj removed in-form Devon Conway caught at square leg for a duck. Shami - on his first ball, bowled Will Young, reducing the Kiwis to 19 for two in nine overs. The seamers kept Daryl and Rachin on the backfoot; however, after Jadeja dropped the young Ravindra, the New Zealand batters upped the ante, targeting the spinners.

Taking the attack to Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, who had a rare harsh day at work, both batters put New Zealand in the driver’s seat. Daryl and Rachin added 159 for the third wicket before Shami returned to dismiss the attacking lefty on 75.

With that, India managed to put brakes on the New Zealand innings. With pressure on, they removed Kiwi skipper Tom Latham, trapped in front by Kuldeep. Last match’s hero, Glenn Philips, joined Mitchell in the middle, who, soon after, completed his maiden hundred in this World Cup – first for a New Zealander batter against India since Glenn Turner in the 1975 edition.

Quick wickets halt NZ’s flow

Philips smashed Siraj for a gigantic six to open his arms, but his stay got shortened, thanks to a wrong-un by Kuldeep Yadav, who removed him on 23. Mark Chapman fell soon after on six, courtesy of a brilliant running catch by Virat Kohli in deep square leg.

Shami proved his worth with a stunning Yorker to clean-up Mitchell Santner on one. The seamer smashed the timber again on the next ball, removing Matt Henry for a first-ball duck. Lockie Ferguson avoided gifting away his wicket.

That, however, couldn’t prevent Shami from picking a five-wicket haul in Dharamsala, as he dismissed centurion Daryl Mitchell on a well-made 130.

KL Rahul affected a run-out on the last ball as India wrapped up New Zealand on 273.

Shami’s five-for eclipses Mitchell’s gritty ton as India restrict New Zealand to 273 in Dharamsala

India’s Shubman Gill has been enjoying his ODI World Cup parade after yet another convincing start against New Zealand in Dharamsala on Sunday (Oct 22). However, he had to ride his luck against the Kiwis when he survived a close call at the non-striker's end. Fortunately for Gill, he was in the right place and avoided run out to help India build another 50-run stand for the opening wicket. India and New Zealand are playing in the ODI World Cup for just the second time in 20 years with revenge on the cards for the Men in Blue having lost in 2019.

What happened with Gill?

On the final ball of the fifth over, a straight drive from Rohit Sharma went towards bowler Trent Boult and appeared to have struck his hand before hitting the stump. With the ball hitting the stumps Gill appeared to have his bat outside the crease as New Zealand were convinced he was run out.
However, much to the relief of Gill and Indian fans, the ball appeared to have taken no deflection of the hand. Later it was also confirmed from the replays that Gill was back in his crease in time to avoid any further controversy. India’s score at that time was 32/0 in five overs.

WATCH | Shubman Gill survives close run out call at non-striker's end against New Zealand in ODI World Cup

Former Indian men's cricket team batting coach Sanjay Bangar has revealed that MS Dhoni and other players cried like kids after the team lost the 2019 semifinal match against New Zealand. MS Dhoni was the last hope for India during the run chase but his unfortunate run out meant that India failed to chase the target of 238 and fell short of 18 runs.

Speaking on air during the ongoing match between India and New Zealand at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Stadium in Dharamsala, Bangar made the revelation.

“It was a heartbreaking moment for all the players as India were playing excellent cricket. We won seven matches in the league phase and to bow out like that was not good,” said Bangar.

“Players cried like kids. MS Dhoni was crying like children. Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant had tears in their eyes. Such stories remain in the dressing room,” he added.

Former Indian men's cricket team batting coach Sanjay Bangar has revealed that MS Dhoni and other players cried like kids after the team lost the 2019 semifinal match against New Zealand.

Sanjay Bangar said, "players including MS Dhoni, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya couldn't stop their tears and cried bitterly in the dressing room after losing the 2019 World Cup Semis". pic.twitter.com/zn18v3JKAA — Mufaddal Vohra (@mufaddal_vohra) October 22, 2023 × Also read | World Cup 2023, NZ vs IND: 'Better to lose...', Ravi Shastri reveals MS Dhoni's advice En route the semifinals, the Indian team had been in imperious touch, winning all matches, bar one against England. World Cup 2023: 'MS Dhoni cried like kid after 2019 WC defeat', reveals former batting coach Sanjay Bangar

Former Indian men's cricket team coach Ravi Shastri has said he wouldn't mind if India went down against New Zealand in their group-stage World Cup encounter. Shastri recalled the advice of MS Dhoni from the 2011 World Cup campaign where the legendary Indian captain said it was "good to lose a game in the league stage".

Shastri made the comments while speaking to the host broadcasters as India attempted to avenge the agonising 2019 World Cup semifinal loss.

"In 2011 India lost one game. And that was a league game to New Zealand, but they went on to win the World Cup. I remember MS Dhoni when he was the captain said once, 'You know, sometimes in the league format (in World Cup), it's good to lose one game, you know, because you know, you don't want to be suddenly caught in a semi-final or final where you want everything and then you get the shivers,'" said Shastri.

India have a rather terrible record against New Zealand in the World Cups. The men-in-blue have failed to win a game in the quadrennial tournament against the Kiwis since 2003. Despite having won two World Cup titles during this period, the Blackcaps have had the wood over India.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss in Dharamsala and opted to field with Suryakumar Yadav, and Mohammed Shami replacing Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur in the playing XI. Quizzed upon why he opted to chase, Sharma said the dew was a factor and that chasing teams would have an advantage.

India started the powerplay extremely well with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj keeping the Kiwi batters in check. As of the last update, Devon Conway and Will Young had departed with Siraj and Shami picking the wickets respectively. World Cup 2023, NZ vs IND: 'Better to lose...', Ravi Shastri recalls MS Dhoni's advice

India pacer Mohammed Shami struck on his first ball of the 2023 ODI World Cup while playing against New Zealand on October 22 in Dharamsala. Shami, who didn't play in the first four matches for India, came back in the side as Shardul Thakur's replacement and immediately made an impact.

Bowling the ninth over of the innings, Shami bowled a length delivery to Kiwi opener Will Young, who inside edged the ball onto his stumps. Have a look at the video below:

Young, who scored 17, was the second wicket to fall for New Zealand as they had a horrible start after being asked to bat first. Indian pacers Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah started off brilliantly, giving away just 11 runs in the first five overs.

Siraj was also able to get Kiwi Devon Conway - their most prolific batter this World Cup - caught out for duck on the leg side in the fourth over of the innings. By the end of 10 overs, New Zealand, who are at the top of the points table, had just 34 runs on the scoreboard for the loss of two wickets.

Earlier, India skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to field first. It would be for the fifth straight time in this World Cup, the Indian Team will be batting second, hoping to continue their unbeaten run while chasing.

Considering how well the Indian batters have performed thus far, and the dew factor, which will make a difference, electing to bowl first against New Zealand comes off a right call.

With Hardik unavailable for this match, head coach Rahul Dravid and even captain Rohit Sharma mentioned the imbalance it caused. However, to maintain the balance, the team management went ahead with the older template of playing seven batters and four bowlers.

While Suryakumar will made his World Cup debut, Mohammed Shami returned to the side for the first time in this tournament.

ODI World Cup 2023: WATCH | Mohammed Shami takes wicket on first ball in tournament in India vs New Zealand

India and New Zealand – two unbeaten teams in this World Cup so far, will lock horns on Sunday (Oct 22) at the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala. As veteran batter Virat Kohli gears up for a fierce contest against India’s toughest opponents at the top stage, he talks highly of a ‘professional and a well-structured’ Kiwi team that has, much like India, clicked all boxes in their four contested matches in World Cup 2023.

With all eyeballs on this marquee World Cup clash in Dharamsala – a venue that assists seamers with extra movement in the air and off the pitch, Virat will look forward to putting past demons behind and scoring big against the best seam attack in this tournament.

With New Zealand gaining an advantage over India with better performances on the past two occasions in ICC events (2019 CWC semis and 2021 WTC Final), the home team can correct their mistakes and write history on a new day.

Speaking to the host broadcaster on the day of the match, Kohli hailed the high-flying New Zealand team, saying they don’t make many mistakes and play consistent cricket within their structure, resulting in their success at the top level.

But within that structure, they have been very consistent, and that has been the reason for their success,” Kohli told Star Sports ahead of the India-New Zealand World Cup match.

“Credit to the side for the way that they are playing. Any team that plays against them has to find a way to break their rhythm and play to the best of their abilities, which will eventually decide whether you can cope up with their consistency or not because they are not a team that makes many mistakes.

Kohli hails 'professional and well-structured' New Zealand as India gear up for marquee World Cup clash

Top T20I batter for India, Suryakumar Yadav, has replaced injured all-rounder Hardik Pandya as India elected to bowl first against New Zealand in Dharamsala. Mohammed Shami got roped in for his first World Cup 2023 game, replacing Shardul Thakur.

New Zealand - Devon Conway, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Philips, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson and Trent Boult

World Cup: Suryakumar replaces Hardik Pandya as India bowl first against New Zealand in Dharamsala

The match the cricket fans are eagerly waiting for - between India and New Zealand is upon us. Two top sides in world cricket, two unbeaten teams in this competition thus far, will lock horns at the beautiful HPCA stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday (Oct 22). Here is the match preview and result prediction of the India vs New Zealand World Cup 2023 match.

India aim revenge

Having suffered a close and heartbreaking defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the past edition’s semis in Manchester, India now has a chance and stage to take revenge and continue with their winning streak in the home World Cup.

The most balanced side in this competition has done everything right, winning four matches straight, beating Australia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. While India’s top order has made all the noise with hundreds from Rohit and Kohli, the lower middle order is yet to get tested in this World Cup.

The bowling department has impressed one and all, but the obstacle here is whom to replace Hardik Pandya in the XI, who will miss the match with an ankle injury.

New Zealand ready for Manchester repeat

Having broken India’s back before at a World Cup stage with startling bowling performances, the Kiwi seamers will be licking their lips considering the venue and the surface on offer.

Trent Boult and Matt Henry will hold the keys with the new ball, while Lockie Ferguson will take care of the middle overs with sheer pace. Having the luxury of playing two spinners in Rachin Ravindra and Mitchell Santner, New Zealand is ready to take on star-studded Indian batting.

The Kiwi batters are in equally good form, with most contributing in the concluded matches. Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell will be the batters to look out for, while Mark Chapman will have the chance to prove his worth at the top stage.

Result Prediction –

Given the conditions in Dharamsala, the ball will move early on, assisting seamers from both ends. However, the team with a stronger batting unit will prevail, and on current form, India looks likely to beat New Zealand in Dharamsala.

Predicted XIs –

World Cup 2023, India vs New Zealand: Match preview and result prediction

Ace New Zealand bowler Trent Boult said facing the ‘powerful’ Indian Team would be challenging but also admitted to enjoying playing against them. The Kiwi seamers have a bitter-sweet history with Indian batters after what transpired the last time in Manchester four years ago. Aware of the home team peaking at this time in the tournament, Boult said he is looking forward to the clash in Dharamsala.

“They’re a powerful team, they cover all bases,” Boult told Reuters ahead of Sunday's World Cup blockbuster against India. “They’ve been playing some good cricket, but it’s been a team that we’ve enjoyed playing.”

Given the rise of the franchise-based T20 leagues and the emergence of IPL, several New Zealand players in the CWC squad have plied their trades in the league for some time now. Considering this, Boult said most of the players are already familiar with the conditions and having played against India lately, they have their plans ready for the marquee clash.

“Nothing changes from our point of view really. It’s about going out there and being positive and doing the things that work well. These guys are very familiar with the conditions, but they feel pressure just as much as any other batsman or any other bowler,” Boult said.

With India and New Zealand being the only two teams remaining unbeaten so far in the competition, come Sunday one of them would have its streak broken.

“Both undefeated, I’m sure it will be a cracker,” added Boult.

Boult ready for high-voltage match

Acknowledging the craze for cricket in India and what it means to the billion fans, Boult anticipates a high-octane clash.

“Playing against India in India, it doesn’t get much bigger than that,” Boult said. He anticipates an increase in intensity and possibly a few fireworks during the match. “But hopefully they’re for us,” Boult added optimistically.

While the Kiwis have beaten the defending champions England, the Netherlands, Bangladesh and Afghanistan in four matches played, the hosts India walked over Australia, Afghanistan, arch-rivals Pakistan and Bangladesh in their scheduled games.

Meanwhile, against New Zealand, India would be without their star all-rounder, Hardik Pandya, who injured his left ankle while attempting to stop the ball during the game against Bangladesh.

In his absence, India could either play an extra batter in Ishan Kishan or Suryakumar Yadav or could opt for playing an extra seamer in Mohammed Shami, given the favourable conditions.

World Cup: They are powerful but we enjoy playing against them - Trent Boult on facing India in Dharamsala

Former World Cup winner and star spinner Harbhajan Singh has backed the selection of Mohammed Shami in the Indian team for the upcoming ODI World Cup contest against New Zealand. The two teams are set to lock horns in the coveted contest on Sunday (Oct 22) in Dharamsala as India look to settle a score. The Men in Blue lost to New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup semifinal and have revenge on the agenda when they cross roads. However, with Hardik Pandya injured, the Indian team will be forced to make a change with Mohammed Shami likely to make his first appearance.

Harbhajan backs Shami

“Suryakumar Yadav for me. I feel he should be straightaway brought in. Play Mohammed Shami in place of Shardul (Thakur) because then you get five proper bowlers. You feel Hardik Pandya needs to bowl three-four overs because Shardul might not be able to bowl his full quota of overs,” Harbhajan said on the eve of the contest.

India’s ace star all-rounder Hardik Pandya got injured during the Bangladesh contest when he twisted his ankle. As a result, he will miss the match and is already in Bengaluru for treatment and is likely to join the Indian team for the England clash in Lucknow.

For the Indian team management, they are likely to bring in Mohammed Shami in his place but according to Harbhajan, they should drop Shardul in favour of Suryakumar Yadav. According to him, this will give India five proper bowling options while Surya’s inclusion could be a blessing in disguise for the team.

Teams ready for big clash

The key clash on Sunday could also see a big change in the opposition camp as Tim Southee could come in having been passed fit. Stand-in skipper Tom Latham confirmed of Southee’s availability for the match as the two will play for the first time in the ODI World Cup this tournament.

India have got off to a good start as they have beaten Australia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The contest on Sunday will be a repeat of the 2019 World Cup semifinal, where India lost to New Zealand in a heart-breaking contest in Manchester. Despite injuries in the camp, New Zealand have hardly suffered from any crisis on the field as they have gotten the better of England, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands.

Former World Cup winner and star spinner Harbhajan Singh has backed the selection of Mohammed Shami in the Indian team for the upcoming ODI World Cup contest against New Zealand.

Harbhajan backs Shami “Suryakumar Yadav for me. ODI World Cup 2023: Former India star makes BOLD claim ahead of New Zealand clash, urges to use Mohammed Shami

New Zealand’s stand-in skipper Tom Latham is embracing the opportunity to play Tim Southee in the ODI World Cup contest against India in Dharamsala as they get ready for the high-voltage contest. Both India and New Zealand will meet in the ODI World Cup match on Sunday (Oct 22) with both teams only separated by Net Run Rate (NRR) while winning all of the four matches so far. Southee has an injured thumb while regular skipper Kane Williamson is also unavailable due to the same injury suffered against Bangladesh.

"Yeah, obviously I definitely stayed up for the All Blacks and watched them. It was a great contest, obviously Kiwis support each other wherever that may be around the world and we're certainly no different in supporting the All Blacks and obviously we've had so much support back home for us here and this World Cup as well," Latham said in the pre-match press conference.

"So obviously great to see you know that they're there for another week and good luck to them next week's going to be a great contest and yeah Kane's obviously still nursing his thumb injury. It's a day-by-day process with him as well. Fingers crossed he'll be available for later on in the tournament. And in regards to Tim, he's available for selection," Latham added.

Southee was injured in the England tour and was feared to miss the entire World Cup however he made it to the main tournament despite missing the early stage. He has been an important part of the national side along with Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson. On the flip side, Williamson’s injury has also been a key concern for the management. Williamson got injured during the Bangladesh match and had to retire hurt having been in excruciating pain.

India romped past Bangladesh in match 17 of the CWC 2023 edition on Thursday (Oct 19) at the MCA Stadium in Pune. While everything continued to click for Team India as they beat the Bangla Tigers by seven wickets, chasing 257, all-rounder and vice-captain Hardik Pandya got injured during the proceedings. Being asked to bowl first, India did not start well with Bangladesh openers Tanzid Hasan (51) and Litton Das (66) adding over 50 runs for the first wicket. Thus, Rohit brought in Hardik in the ninth over but the 30-year-old sustained an ankle injury during the third ball.

Hardik didn't bowl any further and was available to bat but India did not require his services courtesy of Virat Kohli's 103 not out and Shubman Gill's 53. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a statement on Friday (Oct 20) ruling him out of India's upcoming clash versus New Zealand on Sunday (Oct 22) in Dharamsala. Post this, former Australia opener-turned-commentator Matthew Hayden opined on Hardik's absence. He feels that there is a balance issue in the Indian line-up with no Hardik.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Hayden said, "No one in the world really. He that good an all-rounder at the moment, and when you think back into the history of the way he’s been performing, whenever he’s not playing for any team there is always a balance issue. He provides that great stability."

Hayden, however, feels that India do have good batting and bowling cover in Hardik's unavailability. "The good thing for India is that they’ve got batting cover. Surya Kumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan can easily slot into that role, and then you get your specialist seamer Mohammad Shami back into the side, so that also would be a very good side. I don’t think you can have Jadeja batting up the order, I feel that’s a fragility in the Indian batting line up. The best combination is to get a specialist batter in there, and that way then you have an option to pick a specialist seam bowler as well in Shami,” Hayden further asserted.

BCCI issued a statement on Friday saying, "Team India vice-captain Hardik Pandya sustained an injury to his left ankle while fielding on his own bowling during India’s match against Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune. The all-rounder was taken for scans and is advised rest. He will be under the constant supervision of the BCCI Medical Team. He will not be taking the flight to Dharamsala with the team on 20th October and will now join the team directly in Lucknow where India play England."

Rohit-led India will hope for Hardik to regain full fitness as soon as possible and return for the England clash, in Lucknow, on Oct 29.

CWC '23: When Hardik Pandya is not playing, there is a balance issue for India, reckons former Aussie opener

An untimely injury to Hardik Pandya has disrupted India’s order heading into the second half of the World Cup 2023. The ace all-rounder twisted his left ankle while attempting to stop the ball in his follow-through in his first over during the Bangladesh innings. With him being taken for scans at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, Pandya will miss the next game against New Zealand in Dharamsala on Sunday and join the team in Lucknow for the England game.

Following BCCI’s confirmation on Pandya, the question arises who would replace him in the XI for the marquee clash? Will it be emerging star Ishan Kishan or T20I stalwart Suryakumar Yadav, or will India opt for a different strategy and play four frontline bowlers, including Mohammed Shami?

India opted for a different template in the lead-up to the World Cup, playing Shardul Thakur at number eight for extra cushion in batting, contrary to what they mostly do – play with seven batters and four bowlers. With this new mantra working so far, India might try and find the right way to maintain the balance.

Would an extra batter work?

Going by the famous saying in the game, ‘On a good batting wicket play an extra bowler, and on a good bowling wicket play an extra batter’, India could be tempted to play an extra batter in Dharamsala against New Zealand – a team with perhaps the best seam and swing bowlers. Considering the history between both teams in the ICC events, India would hate to suffer the same fate of losing wickets to the trio of Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry.

So, what should they do? With Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul applying themselves well in their designated positions so far, shuffling them to accommodate anyone wouldn’t make much sense. So that leaves India with Suryakumar Yadav playing at six in Hardik Pandya’s absence.

But it means India will go in with five outright bowling options, another risk against the Kiwi batters who are in great form.

How about adding an extra bowler?

On a wonderful and even Dharamsala track, where the movement of the ball is more than at any other venue, an extra seamer, that too Mohammed Shami, will do a world of good to India.

With four pacers, including Shardul, and two spinners, Kuldeep and Jadeja, the Indian Team will have a chance to tear into the Kiwi batting lineup and end their winning run in this competition.

Both India and New Zealand are sitting at the top of the points table with four wins in as many matches.

World Cup: Ishan, Suryakumar or Shami? Who will replace injured Pandya for New Zealand game?

India all-rounder Hardik Pandya, in a setback to the team, will be missing the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 match against New Zealand on October 22 in Dharamsala. Pandya got injured during India's win over Bangladesh on October 19 in Pune. He was taken for a scan after twisting his ankle and returned to the ground afterwards.

The BCCI, in a press release, confirmed that Pandya will not be travelling with the team to Dharamsala to play against New Zealand but instead will join the team in Lucknow for the match against England.

"The all-rounder was taken for scans and is advised rest. He will be under the constant supervision of the BCCI Medical Team. He will not be taking the flight to Dharamsala with the team on 20th October and will now join the team directly in Lucknow where India play England," read the BCCI release.

As per a report in the Indian Express, a BCCI official was also quoted as saying that the all-rounder will be missing India's next game against New Zealand.

India all-rounder Hardik Pandya, in a setback to the team, will be missing the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 match against New Zealand on October 22 in Dharamsala.

“He will be heading to Bengaluru where he has been asked to report to the NCA. ODI World Cup 2023: India player Hardik Pandya set to miss New Zealand match after injury vs Bangladesh

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has made a bold claim amid the ODI World Cup 2023 edition in India. Chopra feels there could be an India versus New Zealand final in the ongoing 2023 edition. The former Indian cricketer made the remark after the Kiwis won their fourth game on the trot, beating Afghanistan by 149 runs in match 16 on Wednesday (Oct 18) in Chennai.

The Kane Williamson-less Kiwis have been on a roll in the current edition. The Black Caps have won their opening four games and will now take on India on Sunday (Oct 22) in Dharamshala. They entered the ten-team tournament with several injury concerns. Regular captain Kane Williamson missed the first two games (with a knee injury), played the third and is once again out of action with a thumb injury. Meanwhile, Tim Southee is yet to play -- also dealing with a thumb injury. However, the Black Caps continue to win and move forward courtesy of contributions from Mitchell Santner, stand-in skipper Tom Latham, Matt Henry, Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, etc.

'Not a big deal that it could be an India-New Zealand final'

Thus, Chopra said on his YouTube channel, "They are an amazing team and I feel it's not a big deal that it could be an India-New Zealand final. They have won four out of four and the semi-final berth is almost confirmed. It is such a good team that it doesn't make a difference to them whether Kane (Williamson) is there or not. They figure out a way to win."

In Chennai, New Zealand were struggling at 110 for 4 after being 109 for 1, being asked to bat by the Afghans. Nonetheless, Glenn Phillips (71) and Latham (68) and Mark Chapman (12-ball 25*) took them to 288 for 6 after Will Young (54) set the tone for the side. With the ball, Santner and Lockie Ferguson's three-fers each dismissed the Afghans for 139 in 34.4 overs.

Chopra lauded Kiwis for managing a mini-collapse and feels they are finding players who can bail them out of crisis regularly. He opined, "Kane wasn't there and there was a collapse in the middle, Azmatullah Omarzai dismissed two players in an over, but Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips came there. Will Young was there with Rachin Ravindra at the start. Conway also scored a few runs. Once you reach 280-plus, runs are not scored that easily here."

The former Indian opener also praised Kiwis bowling attack and added, "In bowling, Trent Boult with the new ball and Matt Henry with his incoming delivery. Lockie Ferguson is actually breathing fire. The guy bowls amazingly well. He dismisses batters by scaring and threatening them."

Despite all the injury crisis, the Tom Latham-led NZ have kept the winning run intact and are one of the strongest contenders to life the title, after missing out in the 2015 and 2019 editions by a whisker (ending as runners-up twice).

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma-led India are also on fire with three straight wins and have locked horns with Bangladesh on Thursday (Oct 19) at the MCA Stadium in Pune. They will next meet New Zealand on Sunday in Dharamshala.

It could be India vs New Zealand in CWC '23 final: Former Indian opener makes BOLD claim

During the Asia Cup 2023 edition, former New Zealand cricketer-turned-commentator Simon Doull made a big claim about Team India. Doull reckoned that India's cricket is too statistics-driven and, hence, it becomes a reason for their downfall in big ICC matches. In addition, he pointed out that the reason for India's failures is that they don't resort to a fearless brand of cricket, which would mean compromising on stats.

"Fearless cricket is there issue," Simon Doull told Sky Sports. "They don’t play fearless cricket enough. They play statistics-driven cricket and they are too worried about their stats too often. And to me, that is the one area I am concerned about their batting side," he added.

Now, former Indian pacer S Sreesanth has responded to Doull's statement and made a big claim. "New Zealand are coming to India. They will get to know if India play attacking cricket or not. We will thrash them. They got lucky in 2019 with MS Dhoni getting run out due to a direct hit. What did you do after playing the final? They made a team like England win the World Cup, who hadn't won a 50-over World Cup until then. New Zealand are never going to win. Yes, they might win in the future, but it will be embarrassing for them this time. If you get a chance address the media, please think before you speak. If you are ready to give, you should be able to take it also." Sreesanth told Sportskeeda.

Sreesanth added, "I just want to tell Simon Doull that Indians are going to have a blast against New Zealand. New Zealand are going to learn a lot against India. Yes, there have been certain matches where they have done well against us, especially in ICC events. But those times have gone now. If any of these cricketers get to know what you said, and if Virat is made aware of it, it will be a lot of fun to watch that match."

At present, India are busy with their three-match home ODIs versus Australia with the third and final tie currently being held in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27). The home side already have the series in the pocket with an unassailable 2-0 lead. On the other hand, a second-stringed New Zealand beat Bangladesh 2-0, on Tuesday (September 26), in the three ODIs in the Bangla Tigers' den.

New Zealand will face defending champions England in the CWC 2023 opener on October 05 in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, India will lock horns with Australia in their respective openers on October 08 in Chennai. Both India and New Zealand will square off in match 21 in Dharamshala.

'If Kohli or any...': Sreesanth slams Doull for stat jibe, says India will 'have a blast' vs NZ in CWC '23

Indian cricket team had to face a heart-breaking 2019 World Cup exit in the semi-final against New Zealand on this day. Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni, during the run chase, stitched a solid partnership of 116 to keep Team India alive in the contest. Chasing a target of 240, Virat Kohli’s men fell short by 18 runs. After Jadeja’s dismissal in the 48th over, Indian cricket fans pinned their hopes on Dhoni. One of the finest finishers in the history of cricket, Dhoni seemed poised to take Team India over the line having scored a half-century. But Dhoni’s knock came to an end in the penultimate over after he was run out by a stunning direct hit from Martin Guptill. In an otherwise miserable outing with the bat, it was Jadeja who turned out to be Team India’s solitary ray of hope against the Kiwis. But the star all-rounder’s blistering knock of 59-ball 77 went in vain eventually. A video of Jadeja’s stellar semi-final knock has now gone viral on social media.

How did Twitter react?
Hockey has once again regained mileage in the country. In the recent past, Indian teams have brought several laurels to the nation and earned accolades for their performances. The senior men's team won bronze in the Tokyo Olympics, after a 41-year-hiatus, whereas the women's team ended fourth -- their best-ever showing -- after a close defeat at the hands of Great Britain.

While the senior men's and women's teams are making heads turn and contributing to the game's growth and popularity nationwide, the elusive World Cup title continues to evade countrymen since 1975; their solitary trophy at the showpiece event (which came in the men's category). India's newly appointed T20 captain Hardik Pandya is seeking to fill big shoes. After India won the T20I series against New Zealand on Wednesday, Pandya said he was emulating the role of former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the finisher of the team. "I don't mind playing the role that somewhere down the line, Mahi used to play. At that time, I was young and hitting all around the park. But since he's gone, all of a sudden, that responsibility is onto me," said Pandya. "I don't mind that. We are getting the results. It's okay if I have to play a little slow." 'Since MS Dhoni's gone...': Hardik Pandya reveals the shoes he is trying to fill

On Wednesday (February 01), Hardik Pandya-led India locked horns with New Zealand in the third and final T20I with the scoreline being 1-1. Opting to bat first at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad, India rode on Shubman Gill's 63-ball 126 not out and Rahul Tripathi's 22-ball 44 to post a daunting 234 for 4. In reply, the Mitchell Santner-led Black Caps were never in the hunt and only managed a paltry 66 all-out in 12.1 overs to lose by a whopping 168-run margin. With the series win, India maintained their stronghold on the No. 1 spot in the ICC T20I rankings.

Talking about the contest, India went into the game with only one change with Umran Malik coming in place of Yuzvendra Chahal. Thus, Prithvi Shaw -- who recently slammed 379 in Ranji Trophy -- remained benched which made heads turn in the cricketing fraternity. India backed Gill and Ishan Kishan, who once again fell flat in the series finale. After the easy win over the Kiwis in the Ahmedabad T20I, skipper Hardik Pandya was presented with the trophy by BCCI President Roger Binny and Secretary Jay Shah. Hardik quickly handed the trophy to benched Shaw, grabbing eyeballs for the out-of-favour player.

Following a top-order wobble, captain Hardik Pandya (15 not out) and Suryakumar Yadav (26 not out) combined for a crucial 31-run partnership as they helped the hosts reach 101-4 on the penultimate ball, chasing New Zealand's 99-8. Spinners Ish Sodhi and Michael Bracewell picked up a wicket apiece, while Indian batters Ishan Kishan and Washington Sundar were both run out. New Zealand had posted a strong total of 176 in the first game on Friday, but were unable to repeat that on a pitch that offered plenty of turn, and India's bowlers put them under pressure throughout the innings. Five Indian bowlers picked up a wicket before Arshdeep Singh dismissed Sodhi and Lockie Ferguson. The third and final T20I of the series will take place in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.
