A mass shooting incident on Thursday (May 30) evening left three people dead, including a police officer,in Minneapolis, city officials reported. Officials confirmed that the suspect was also killed.A second police officer was critically wounded, as reported by CBS Minnesota.

While addressing a press conference, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey informed officer Jamal Mitchell was killed in the shooting.Mitchell was shot while he was assisting an injured man,Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Superintendent Drew Evans said.

"Three people, including the suspected shooter, are dead after a mass shooting Thursday at a Minneapolis apartment complex,"police said.

According to a news release from the city of Minneapolis, the incident began around 5:30 pm when officers responded to a report of shots fired at an apartment complex in the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue South, located in the Whittier neighbourhood. Upon arrival, officers were immediately met with gunfire, the Minneapolis Police Department said.

Two civilians were killed and two officers were taken to thehospital.

However, the Minneapolis Police and Peace Officers Association, the union which represents Minneapolis officers, said in a statement that one of those wounded officers had died.

"Once again, a police officer bravely faced danger and tragically lost his life protecting the community," the union's executive director Brian Peters said in a statement.

The exact circumstances of the shooting were unclear.

Witnesses described hearing the gunshots.
