“Virat Kohli is a big player and a fantastic captain. He is aggressive and very emotional. Any captain who has come in has only taken Indian cricket forward. Cricket- 'Indian batsmen need not worry about the series against England': Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar hammered Team India's batting execution in the World Test Championship final against New Zealand, noticing that Men in Blue scarcely showed any persistence. He likewise recommended that a lot of white-ball cricket has restrained India's capacity as a batting unit.

Virat Kohli and his men quietly gave up on the last day of the WTC final, in what should be the greatest day for batting with brilliant daylight around.

Writing in his segment in The Telegraph, Sunil Gavaskar was unnerved with India's batting execution, as they played some forgettable shots, which saw them packaged out for 170 in the subsequent innings. He wrote: "The conditions on the final day were bright, and the sun was out in all its glory, but the Indians, so used to the white-ball game, just didn't show the patience required in a Test match and were instrumental in their own downfall with some forgettable shots."

India will be quick to enhance their weaknesses when they take on England in a five-match Test series beginning in August.

After the loss in the WTC final, Virat Kohli expressed that his team's batsmen didn't squeeze the New Zealand bowlers, particularly on Kyle Jamieson, permitting him to bowl in comparable regions for extensive stretches.

Nonetheless, Sunil Gavaskar recommended that to be effective in attempting conditions; one necessity to bat in the manner in which one typically does while being patient and making the right shot choice. As per him, Kane Williamson exemplified that approach consummately.

"What patience and good shot selection can do in trying conditions was seen in the batting of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson in both innings. He held the New Zealand innings together and took his team home. What he also showed is that the thinking that a batsman needs to go out and start playing shots on this kind of pitch and in conditions favoring the bowler is just negative thinking. He batted the way he knows how to, and that's what every batsman should do" - Sunil Gavaskar composed.

In spite of the inadequacies, Sunil Gavaskar is certain that Team India will perform better in the Test series against England, as conditions will be significantly greater for batting in August. India will trust that their batting unit can concoct better exhibitions in the series against England.

Cricket: Team India's schedule for 2021-23 World Test Championship cycle

India may have lost the last of the World Test Championship yet it removes nothing from the extraordinary measure of difficult work the unit has assembled throughout the most recent two years.

After their exit from the 2019 World Cup, Team India was out on a Test venture that saw them register series wins – in West Indies, at home against South Africa, the Day/Night Test against Bangladesh, and the unfathomable Border-Gavaskar Trophy win in Australia – to give some examples. An ICC title may keep on escaping the Indian group, however, what this unit has accomplished can't be subverted.

Although Virat Kohli neglected to win another ICC occasion, the Indian skipper posted an endearing message via web-based media, featuring how this unit affects him and his teammates. Taking to Twitter, Virat Kohli posted an image of the group in a cluster, with the subtitle: "This isn't just a team. It's a family. We move ahead. TOGETHER."

The group will get back to the bio-bubble on July 14, 20 days ahead of the Test series against England, where they will take on the hosts in five Tests at Nottingham, Lord's, Leeds, The Oval The Old Trafford.

TOGETHER." This isn’t just a team. It’s a family. According to reports, some will watch the Wimbledon, while others are reserving their passes to watch Euro 2020 games. The group will get back to the bio-bubble on July 14, 20 days ahead of the Test series against England, where they will take on the hosts in five Tests at Nottingham, Lord's, Leeds, The Oval The Old Trafford. 'This isn't just a team, it's a family': Virat Kohli shares a message after WTC Final defeat

VVS Laxman trusts Team India will be distressed by the way where their batting fell on the reserve day of the World Test Championship final against New Zealand. The previous Indian batsman featured how the Men dressed in Blue batted better in many unfavourable conditions in the primary innings, setting up a sum of 217 runs.

Although, India was packaged out for only 170 in their second innings in what should be the greatest day for batting, with splendid daylight around Southampton.

VVS Laxman expressed that New Zealand uncovered some specialized deficiencies in India's batting line-up which Virat Kohli and co. should address prior to taking on England in a five-Test arrangement, beginning in August.

Writing in his section for the Times of India, VVS Laxman clarified: "India will be hurting, especially at their ordinary second-innings batting performance. They had handled more difficult conditions in the first innings with greater aplomb, but in the best batting conditions of the Test on Day 6, they didn't do enough to even secure a draw that would have given them a share of the spoils. For a team that prides itself on taking adversity in its stride, the manner of the defeat rather than the result itself must be galling. New Zealand exposed a few technical inadequacies in the top order that England must have taken note of."

India, at last, lost the last by eight wickets, with New Zealand winning their second-since forever ICC prize all the while. By chance, the Kiwis additionally improved India in the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy last.

Following the loss, Indian captain Virat Kohli implied that tough calls will be taken. Virat Kohli expressed that Team India would hope to reassess and rethink and get the correct individuals who have the right outlook to perform.

He composed: "India has plenty of issues to address between now and the start of the five-Test series. They will contemplate some hard decisions, as Virat has already indicated, but knowing the team, I am sure they will use the Southampton Test as a spur to greater things."

India's visit through England is simply beginning as they will presently take on the host country in a five-match Test series, beginning on 4 August. Team India was thoroughly beaten by a 4-1 edge in the Test arrangement the last time they visited England in 2018.

A significant section of the Men in Blue will travel to Sri Lanka for limited-overs series in July with young players like Prithvi Shaw, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Varun Chakravarthy and Chetan Sakariya in the squad and under coach Rahul Dravid.

The team will be led by Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been named the vice-captain. Dravid has played a key role in nurturing India's young talent. As the head of NCA, Dravid has given several young talents to the Men in Blue. Indian cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar talked about his former teammate Rahul Dravid and his new role as the coach for the team.

“These players have spent enough time with Rahul, so they know him. A coach is someone who should keep a healthy atmosphere in the team and the dressing room, and Rahul will do that. At this level, unless there are weaknesses, you don’t need to coach the players. They all know how to hit a cover drive or bowl an outswinger. When somebody is struggling, that’s when someone of his experience will play a role. Otherwise, the team knows what they are supposed to do,” Tendulkar said in an interview with Times of India.

Earlier, Tendulkar also praised Jasprit Bumrah and said that his awkward bowling action makes it difficult for the batsman to play his ball.

“I was told that when a bowler is bowling well, stand at the non-striker's end (laughs). Jokes apart, Bumrah is a world-class bowler, his action is slightly awkward, I have played him in the nets and his action is awkward. He is quicker than you think. He hits the bat hard so one can say because his action is odd, you get less time to react,” Tendulkar was quoted as saying to ANI.

The duo put up 62 runs on the stand for the opening wicket before Sharma got dismissed on 34, whereas, Gill got dismissed on 28 by Jamieson and Wagner respectively.

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar lauded the opening pair and said that the pair disturbed New Zealand seamers' rhythm while speaking to Star Sports on Lunch.

"It looked good for India purely because the way both the batters applied themselves. They were proactive in their approach. They were reactive. They were not wanting to hang back and see how things goes. They were standing outside the crease," Bangar said.

"At times, they were walking towards the bowlers, which was done by Shubman Gill on a regular basis. Just to disturb the lengths of the New Zealand bowler. I felt that they succeeded in that because they disturbed the lengths, New Zealand had to try out different field placements at times, which normally they would not have done.

"If India had stuck to a traditional approach, but India were proactive and hence they got the upper hand in first hour," he signed off.

"The Reserve Day has been scheduled to ensure five full days of play, and it will only be used if lost playing time cannot be recovered through the normal provisions of making up lost time each day,” ICC had said in a release while announcing the playing conditions for the WTC final.

However, the weather forecast for the next four days is also not encouraging as the Rose Bowl is expected to receive some more showers in the upcoming days. "New Zealand have had fantastic preparation for this World Test Championship final. They've played two Test matches against England, and basically outplayed them in both. You can't prepare for a Test match in England having been involved in an IPL that was called off a month ago and with no proper warm-up matches at all," Pietersen wrote in his blog for Betway Insider.

Virat and Co. suffered a crushing defeat in the Test series at the hands of New Zealand that was played in 2020. New Zealand's pace attack proved to be too good for an Indian batsman in the series, therefore, the batting order will be very crucial for the Men in Blue in the juggernaut clash in Southampton.

However, Team India this time is going to face Kiwis with a much better batting lineup. Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar feels that Rohit Sharma will play a crucial role in India's tour to England.

"In his case, it’s always the first two-three overs. Those are the overs where his front foot is not quite getting to the pitch of the ball. But a couple of overs down the road, once his front foot starts reaching the pitch of the ball, then he is very good," Gavaskar said on The Cricket Analyst podcast.

"Even in Australia, he didn’t score too many runs but the time he had to play their fast bowlers was amazing. These guys were bowling at 90 miles an hour but he actually made it look like 40 miles per hour. He had so much time to play."

"His thing is that all the time he is looking to attack. So sometimes, the shot selection is where he gets out. But if he gets that right, then he can get as many as three hundreds in this five-Test series," said Gavaskar.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced a 15-member squad for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final, set to be played from June 18 to 22 at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.

Virat Kohli will lead the Indian team for the WTC Final with Ajinkya Rahane being his deputy. The pace department have been completed by the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammad Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Umesh Yadav while both Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin complete the spin duo.

The likes of Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar miss out on a spot due to tight competition. The duo rose to the occasion when India missed their star players in the historic tour of Australia.

The India-Pakistan rivalry was fierce from the 90s and late 2000s. Inzamam-Ul-Haq, who was one of the top batsmen during that era, feels that the matches between the two have become more of India's way as the country has focused on different levels of cricket.

"Until 2010, there was intense competition among these three teams. But over the last 10-12 years, India has improved its game immensely and has certainly gone ahead of Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The credit goes to the IPL for sure, but I must admit that India has focused a lot on its first-class cricket structure and that has played a huge role in its development," Inzamam told Sportstar.

"The associations have got money and the players have got world-class facilities - in terms of training. India is reaping benefits of its robust domestic structure, whereas Pakistan and Sri Lanka have not been able to develop their first-class cricket that much."

Former Pak skipper cited the example of India's historic tour to Australia, earlier this year. With Virat Kohli's absence and several veteran stars getting injured, India's young guns had to step up. "Some 15 years ago, when a youngster came into the scene, he would get a few years' time to settle down, but now, there is no breathing space. The moment one enters the scene, we expect performances from him," Inzamam added.

"Earlier, touring sides struggled against the Australian team despite having top cricketers in their ranks. It was nearly impossible to beat Australia at home, but a bunch of youngsters from India actually did an incredible job by defeating the Aussies in their backyard. And that’s why, your first-class structure needs to be top notch - because it prepares you well. That is one area where Sri Lanka and Pakistan are slightly lagging behind."

The credit goes to the IPL for sure, but I must admit that India has focused a lot on its first-class cricket structure and that has played a huge role in its development," Inzamam told Sportstar. "The associations have got money and the players have got world-class facilities - in terms of training. India is reaping benefits of its robust domestic structure, whereas Pakistan and Sri Lanka have not been able to develop their first-class cricket that much." Former Pak skipper cited the example of India's historic tour to Australia, earlier this year. With Virat Kohli's absence and several veteran stars getting injured, India's young guns had to step up. Young talents like Shubman Gill, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, Rishabh Pant, and Navdeep Saini rose to the occasion and pulled off a historic win.

New Zealand on Sunday hammered England by eight wickets in the second Test to seal the two-match series 1-0 at the Edgbaston. Taking the field with a target of 38 to win, New Zealand batsmen finished the job quickly to register the memorable win on English soil.

England were down to 122 for 9 at the end of Day 3 and took a lead of just 37 runs and set a very low target for the BlackCaps.

Michael Vaughan lashed out at England's batting performance and felt that their chances of winning Ashes will be none if they continue such form.

“They now have just five chances to sort the batting out before the Ashes. They can't arrive in Australia with a batting line-up this fragile. They’d have no chance. This batting line-up is fragile and we have to now start looking at players and wondering if they are good enough because they keep getting out cheaply,” said Vaughan on the BBC Test Match Special.

“England have tinkered too much. Everything has gone downhill for England since they went up 1-0 in India. Don't muck about with Test cricket. England aren't a good enough team to muck about,” he added.

This is New Zealand’s third win in 18 Test series in England and first after their historic wins in 1986 and 1999. Whereas, this was England’s first home series defeat since 2014, wherein they lost against Sri Lanka.

New Zealand will gain plenty of confidence heading into the World Test Championship final against India, scheduled to start from June 18 in Southampton.

Tim Southee showed his class during the first Test against England as he dismantled Root and Co. in the first innings after scalping six wickets at Lord's.

“I think Tim Southee will trouble the Indians the most in the swinging conditions. He is quite clever. He draws the batsman in by bowling slightly wide of the crease and slightly fuller. And that’s gonna be the danger ball for the Indian batsman. He’s going to lure them into hitting a half volley into the covers, and he will look to swing that ball. So that’s the ball the Indians need to watch out for," Panesar said while speaking with sports presenter Dr Yash Kashikar on Sportzoclock.

Pitch in Southampton has favoured the pacers and Virat and Co. will have to be careful with the Kiwi bowling attack. As per Panesar, New Zealand seem like a stronger team than Men in Blue.

“I think New Zealand look slightly the better side. The reason being they have a lot more variations. They have a left-armer, right-armer and the tall bowler Jamieson as well. And that’s a lot more difficult for a batsman to adjust to.

“So NZ will be hoping that the Indians will be preparing against the likes of a right armer and a left-armer and practicing with the ball swinging, because that is where it is going to be really testing for India,” he said.

The batting legend will now manage Team India that will tour Sri Lanka. Dravid explained that young players involved with him at India A and Under-19 became immense talent due to the number of opportunities he provides.

"I tell them upfront, if you come on an A tour with me, you will not leave here without playing a game. I've had that personal experience myself as a kid: going on an A tour and not getting an opportunity to play is terrible. You've done well, you scored 700-800 runs, you go, and you don't get a chance to show what you're good at," Dravid was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo on The Cricket Monthly.

"Then you're back to square one from the selectors' point of view, because the next season you have to score those 800 runs again. It is not easy to do that, so there is no guarantee you'll get a chance again. So. you tell people upfront: this is the best 15 and we are playing them. This is not about the supposed best XI. At U-19, we make five-six changes between games if we can."

Dravid went on to point out the difference between today's scenarios and the days when he used to play cricket.

"Playing on the beach and playing on the road doesn't make you a cricketer. It makes you someone who loves the game. That's what we had. We had a lot of people who loved the game. Unless you give that guy a proper matting wicket or a turf wicket, unless you give him some half-decent coaching, some half-decent fitness assistance... where was all this in the 1990s and the 2000s?" Dravid pointed out.

"There was no access to it. We were starved of knowledge. Even in terms of fitness, we used to look at the Australians and South Africans and we used to look at their fitness trainers, and what did we get? 'Don't do too much gym, your body will become stiff. Bowl, bowl and bowl. Run rounds and laps.'"

In what will be an audition for some in the build-up to the upcoming T20 World Cup, the likes of Kuldeep Yadav, Prithvi Shaw, Manish Pandey among others would look to impress the selectors and the members, management of the senior team, who are in England for the World Test Championship final and five-Test series against England.

The call-up becomes special for Devdutt Padikkar, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Nitish Rana, Varun Chakravarthy and Chetan Sakariya – who earn their maiden call-up to the Indian team. Additionally, the squad will be assisted by five net bowlers.

'Humbled': Shikhar Dhawan reacts after being named India captain for Sri Lanka tour

Former Indian cricketer Sarandeep Singh feels that all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will miss the World Test Championship if the team decides to play four pacers against New Zealand.

As per Sarandeep, if the conditions at the Ageas Bowl are overcast then Virat and Co. might go ahead with an extra pacer to bolster the bowling attack.

"If conditions are overcast, then you can play an extra fast bowler after Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami,” Sarandeep told PTI.

The former off-spinner surprisingly picked Shardul Thakur, over Mohammed Siraj as Team India's fourth bowler.

“My pick would be Shardul though Siraj has also done very well,” he said.

"You will need batting options in the lower order and Shardul gives you that. The ball will do a bit at Southampton and Shardul is good at swinging the ball. He has years of experience in domestic cricket and has a very sharp cricketing mind,” he added.

Sarandeep also felt that if Team India play with four pacers then Ravichandran Ashwin will fill in the spot of the lone spinner.

"If a fourth pacer is picked, then Jadeja, unfortunately, will have to sit out. Ashwin should play as there are quite a few left-handers in the New Zealand side," Sarandeep said.

Curtly Ambrose feels that India will begin as slight top picks going into the World Test Championship final against New Zealand. He, in any case, added that New Zealand is equipped for disturbing the best since they are a well-sew unit.

India and New Zealand will meet in the much-advertised WTC final in Southampton from June 18 to 22. While India has started preparing for the huge Test, the BlackCaps are confronting England in the second Test at Edgbaston.

On the Curtly Show, Ambrose broke down the odds of the two groups that will fight it out in the WTC final. Highlighting New Zealand's great execution against England during the main Test at Lord's which finished in a draw, he said:

“In the first Test match against England that was drawn, you could see the Kiwis really played well as a team. It’s not going to be an easy Test match, this World Test Championship final. India, I believe, may start as favorites. But you can never discard New Zealand. They have a knack for upsetting the big teams.”

“Cricket is played on the field of play, not on paper. If you don’t go out in the middle and get the job done, then it won’t work. New Zealand has a knack for turning up and causing some headaches for teams all over the world. They look forward to a serious challenge. I am looking forward to that clash, to be quite honest." - he added

Curtly Ambrose noticed that New Zealand will not be an easy side to play against regardless of whether they don't have many stars in their team like India. He said:

“New Zealand won’t be an easy pushover for India. India has got a fantastic team, we all know that. New Zealand doesn’t have too many big stars in their line-up. But they always find a way to win because they have played together so long and believe in their ability. That is the difference.”

New Zealand has managed a blow in front of the Edgbaston Test as captain Kane Williamson was precluded because of an elbow injury. As indicated by Ambrose, the match might have been a decent chance for Williamson to advance beyond the WTC final.

Curtly Ambrose remarks on New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson missing the WTC final:

“It is sad for Kane Williamson because this is the last Test match before the World Test Championship (WTC) begins shortly. He would have loved to have played to get some practice. Unfortunately, he can’t," said Ambrose."But he is a quality player. So I am sure once his elbow is much better, he will go to the nets, probably do extra work, and prepare himself for the World Test Championship" - he concluded.

Indian vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane is one of the most crucial players in the team's Test lineup. Despite the absence of some major stars, he led Team India to a crucial win against Australia earlier this year. He, now, recalled the advice he received from former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid that ‘motivated’ and ‘inspired’ him.

Rahane shared his interaction with Dravid during a Duleep Trophy final in 2008-09 where he was playing for the West Zone while Dravid was representing the South Zone.

"I remember in a Duleep Trophy final, we were playing against South Zone in 2008-09 and Rahul Dravid was playing in it in Chennai. I got runs in that game – 165 and 98. Rahul bhai called me up after the game and said, I’ve read about you a lot, you are scoring a lot of runs. As a player, it is very natural that you will start expecting an India call-up. All I would tell you is to keep on doing what you’ve been doing,” Rahane told former India wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta in an interview with ESPNCricinfo.

"You keep focussing on that and India call-up will come automatically. Don’t run after it, it will follow you. Getting that advice from someone like Rahul bhai really motivated me a lot. That inspired me a lot. He has seen a lot of ups and downs. I got another thousand runs next seasons and two years after that, I was selected.”

Ajinkya Rahane went on to add that how he was anxious for not getting an India call-up despite his prolific innings in first-class cricket and said that Pravin Amre helped him out.

“The first three or four games in my first season of Ranji Trophy did not go well. People had started to say that I should be dropped and sent back to club cricket but Pravin Amre, who was our coach at that time said that ‘once we have got someone into the side, we should at least give him 7-8 matches before deciding.’

“There used to be seven league matches at that time and my rest of the games went quite well, I scored runs and from then, for the next five seasons, I scored more than 1000 runs every time in First-class Cricket. So yes, after the first two-three years I started thinking that I could get a call-up any day but the more I thought about it, the further it went away,” Rahane said.

With just over a week to go for the juggernaut clash between India and New Zealand for the World Test Championship finals, former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar pointed out two of Virat and Co.'s biggest strengths.

According to Agarkar, resilience and belief are Team India's biggest strength as they head into the final clash at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

“I think a couple of things, resilience or just belief in your ability or in your own team,” Agarkar said on Star Sports show Game Plan.

He recalled India's series against Australia and England while explaining his point.

“Look at the England series at home, we expected India to win. Yes, the conditions suit their (India) wicket or their spin bowling, but they lost the first Test comprehensively. They came back and beat England really well in the next three Tests,” Agarkar added.

Ajit Agarkar, who featured for Team India for 26 Tests, 191 ODIs and 4 T20Is, felt that the series against Australia gave India players like Shardul Thakur, T Natarajan and Mohammed Siraj.

“Look at Australia (series), they (India) lost that first Test, bowled out at what 36 – losing the host of your first team players, whether it's your best batsman in the team, Virat Kohli, your best bowler in the team, Mohammad Shami, those sort of losses. By the end of the series, you had a Shardul Thakur, T Natarajan, Mohammad Siraj bowling for you, against a full-strength Australian team and you still managed to find a way to win in those situations. So, the depth in that team – even though there was not a lot of experience – the guys that came in had enough belief that they could turn up. That’s been India’s strength,” Agarkar said.

“There have been some tricky situations. Apart from those two Tests in New Zealand, in general, if you look at India’s records in recent times, they’ve always competed, if not won and found ways to win with different players, which has been their strength,” he added.

Kaneria went on to say that Rohit Sharma has much better technique than Indian skipper Virat Kohli.

"No doubt, Kohli belongs to a different class altogether but I feel Rohit is better than him technique-wise. Kohli is a superstar, a legend but Rohit's has a knack of getting big scores. Although that has not happened in a while, every big player I feel scores big in important matches. He is due for a double-century," Kaneria said on his YouTube channel.

Former Pak bowler added that the conditions in Southampton will suit Rohit Sharma which increases his chances to score a daddy hundred.

"The wicket in Southampton will suit him and I believe he is a key player. It is important that he scores runs and I am sure he will make big runs because that’s the kind of player he is.
