Ahead of the IPL 2026 final against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Sunday, Shubman Gill reflected on the physical and mental challenges of a packed tournament schedule. Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Saturday, the Gujarat Titans captain stressed that title-deciding matches are ultimately won through mental strength and composure under pressure. "But yes, physically they might have an advantage, but I think finals are all about mental toughness. So the team that is mentally up for the challenge is the one that's going to win," said Gill. The opener also discussed his aspirations across all formats of the game and said, "I'd be happy to play if, you know, I get picked for the T20 team. But I honestly want to keep working on my game. Doesn't matter what format it is. I want to keep getting better as a T20 batsman, as an ODI batsman, as a Test batsman, you know, cricket is such a game you can never really get perfect, but obviously you can strive for it, and that's what I try to do." Gill reserved special praise for teammate Sai Sudharsan, highlighting the youngster’s consistency and ability to maintain high standards throughout a demanding IPL campaign. "I think in a tournament like IPL, you know, when I first started playing, one of the things that one of the challenges that I faced was to keep playing the matches at the same intensity. Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill admitted that the run chase against Punjab Kings was not easy and needed patience instead of attacking play. A brilliant four-wicket spell by Jason Holder, along with important contributions from Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar, guided Gujarat Titans to a narrow four-wicket win in the final over at Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. After the match, Gill explained that the pitch was slow, so it was not possible to finish the match quickly. The team planned to build the innings step by step and take the game till the end. He also said that it was hard for new batsmen to score runs easily, so players who were already settled had to stay longer and finish the match. "I think in chases like these, we would have liked to not take it as deep as it went, but two crucial points. This is not the kind of wicket where we'll chase in 15-16 overs. So we thought maybe one over before or a couple of overs before. That was the talk. If someone is set, they should go deep because it's not easy to hit from ball 1. Length balls weren't coming as we play on other wickets. It was important for the batsman who was set. luckily we had Washi, and he finished the game for us," Shubman Gill said after the match. With this win, GT are at the sixth spot, with six wins and four losses, giving them 12 points. Later in the chase, PBKS kept fighting, but knocks from Sai Sudharsan (57 in 41 balls, with five fours and a six) and Washington Sundar (40* in 23 balls, with five fours and a six) took GT to a win with one ball left. With inputs from agencies

Chasing 164, GT held their nerve in the final over to secure a four-wicket win, their sixth of the season. PBKS, meanwhile, suffered just their second defeat in nine matches but remain top of the table.

PBKS still stay at the top, with six wins, two losses and a no result, giving them 13 points. IPL 2026 | 'Feels very satisfying': GT skipper Shubman Gill after four-wicket win over RCB

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill admitted that his side lost momentum at a crucial stage, pointing to their inability to find boundaries in the 17th, 18th and 19th overs as a key factor in their five-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru during an Indian Premier League 2026 clash on Friday (Apr 24). Batting first, GT posted 205/3, powered by a superb 100 off 58 balls from Sai Sudharsan. They appeared on course for a total in the 220–230 range after reaching 170/2 in 16 overs. However, despite collecting 15 runs in the 16th over, they also lost Sudharsan, which proved to be a turning point. From there, RCB’s bowling unit, featuring Suyash Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood, tightened down effectively, restricting boundaries across the next three overs and giving away only 17 runs in 18 deliveries. A final-over burst added 18 runs, but GT still ended below their anticipated total. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Shubman Gill said the Gujarat Titans lost momentum in the crucial 16th to 19th overs, where they failed to find boundaries and fell short of expected runs. "Definitely, I think from 16th to 19th we couldn't get any boundaries and couldn't get as many runs as we would have liked. Those were crucial overs for us," Gill said. Also Read - IPL 2026 updated points table: RCB move to second; GT stay seventh With the ball, GT made a strong start by reducing RCB to 58/1 in the powerplay, but they struggled to maintain pressure afterward as Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal stitched together a rapid 115-run partnership off just 59 balls. Kohli led the chase with a fluent 81 off 44, while Padikkal contributed a brisk 55 from 27 deliveries. Gill noted that although his side began well, they couldn’t secure breakthroughs in the middle overs, a phase that ultimately shifted the game in RCB’s favor. "At the end of the powerplay we were in a good position and it was about taking wickets in the middle overs and were not able to after the powerplay got over," he said. A key moment came early in Kohli’s innings when Washington Sundar dropped a straightforward catch off Mohammed Siraj, giving Kohli a lifeline on zero. Gill acknowledged that such missed chances can be costly but emphasised the need to recover quickly. He also pointed out GT’s inconsistency in dealing with length deliveries and credited RCB’s strong middle-over batting. "When a batsman gets dropped on nought, it's always tough on the fielder but it's important how you come back into the game. We had our moments but we were not able to consistently able to hit the length balls. And I think they batted beautifully in the middle overs," Gill said. Coming to the match, despite an early setback with Jacob Bethell's dismissal, Kohli and Padikkal stitched a 115-run stand to stabilise the chase. RCB briefly wobbled in the middle overs as wickets from Rashid Khan and Manav Suthar brought GT back into the contest, but Krunal Pandya (23* off 12) turned the game with a decisive late assault, including 15 runs in the 18th over. He finished the chase alongside Tim David as RCB reached 206/5 with seven balls to spare. Earlier, GT posted 205/3, powered by a brilliant century from Sai Sudharsan (100 off 58). After a dominant start from Sudharsan and Shubman Gill, RCB bowlers, led by Josh Hazlewood, pulled things back in the death overs to prevent a 220+ total, though GT still crossed the 200-run mark thanks to a late flourish from Jason Holder. With inputs from agencies

'Let’s go Gujarat Titans': Manchester United legend backs Shubman Gill, tweet goes viral

David Miller's refusal to take a single on the penultimate ball to tie the game for Delhi Capitals vs Gujarat Titans on Wednesday (Apr 8) will haunt him for sure. Leaving the job on himself, Miller failed to score two runs needed to win on the last ball as DC lost the match by one run - their first loss in three games played this season. GT skipper Shubman Gill, as soon as Miller denied the crucial single, thought 'we have a chance to win' and he was not wrong. "We were just discussing whether to go for the yorker or to go for the slower one, we decided that given the wicket how it's playing, the slower one, a good slower one will be difficult to hit for a boundary," Gill said about choosing to bowl the slower bouncer. Also Read - IPL 2026 | Rahane better than Rohit & Kishan since 2023? Why Krishna bowled slower bouncer to Miller on last ball? Speaking after the match, Gill revealed they (GT) were thinking about bowling either a yorker or a slower bouncer, given the conditions. "We were just discussing whether to go for the yorker or to go for the slower one, we decided that given the wicket how it's playing, the slower one, a good slower one will be difficult to hit for a boundary," Gill said about choosing to bowl the slower bouncer. After the match, skipper Shubman Gill expressed his disappointment with the team’s overall performance. He said, “After the first match, coming here 1-1, the way we played – disappointed. There are areas we need to look back, reflect and do better.” Also read | 'I used to cry every day in front of my father': Harshit Rana opens up about struggles and journey to success Gill, however, highlighted some positives, especially Virat Kohli’s batting form and the contributions from the lower order. He said, “The way Virat is batting is always is a plus. The way Harshit has batted in this series, batting at No. 8 is not easy.” He also spoke about backing young players with the World Cup in mind. “Keeping the World Cup in mind, we want to give him (Nitish Reddy) opportunities and we want to give him enough overs and see what kind of combinations work for us and what kind of deliveries work for him,” Gill added. Earlier, New Zealand put up a strong total of 337 for 8 after batting first. Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips were the main architects of their innings. Mitchell played a brilliant knock of 137, while Phillips smashed a powerful 106. The duo stitched together a 219-run partnership for the fourth wicket, which turned the match completely in New Zealand’s favour after India had picked up early wickets. Chasing a stiff target of 338, India looked under pressure from the start. Virat Kohli once again stood tall and played a magnificent knock of 124 runs off 108 balls. His innings was filled with control, patience, and timely attacking shots. Kohli kept India in the hunt even as wickets continued to fall at the other end. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana provided brief support, but the required run rate kept increasing. Once Kohli was dismissed late in the innings, India’s chances faded quickly. The team was eventually bowled out for 296 in 46 overs. The loss not only sealed the series for New Zealand but also marked a rare and memorable achievement for them on Indian soil. For India, it was a reminder that strong individual performances need solid team efforts to secure victories.

India lost the ODI series to New Zealand after a 41 run defeat in Indore. Virat Kohli’s 124 went in vain as Shubman Gill admitted disappointment after India’s first home series loss to the Kiwis.

When team India arrived in Indore for the series decider ODI against New Zealand, cricket was not the only thing on their minds. With the cleanest city in India, dealing with a serious water contamination crisis, the team has decided to take extra care about health and safety. The Indian Cricket season this year gets underway with the first of the three ODIs against New Zealand starting on Sunday (Jan 11) in Vadodara. The Men in Blue gear up for the marquee white-ball series against their old foes, a team that has often troubled them across formats. Veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli return to playing the only format, while all eyes will be on Shreyas Iyer, who returns from a spleen injury he suffered in Australia in October last year. However, Rishabh Pant’s last-minute injury has dented the team’s combination ahead of the series opener. It’s time we take a look at the match preview.
Match Preview –
Team India has a few returnees in the captain and opener Shubman Gill, who recovered in time from the neck injury he suffered late last year (during the Kolkata Test against South Africa) and also Iyer, who is back after spending close to three months on the sidelines. Their comebacks will boost the team morale, which already has run-scoring machines in Rohit and Kohli at the top.

Shubman Gill, the newly-appointed Test captain, vows to better team India's Test records after they conceded two home series in the past 12 months, getting whitewashed by New Zealand and South Africa, respectively. Gill, who replaced Rohit Sharma as the Test skipper ahead of the UK tour this year, guided them to level the five-match series (2-2) before helping India crush the West Indies at home across two Tests. Later, against the Proteas, he suffered a neck injury in the first Test and was ruled out of competitive cricket for close to two months, with the team losing both matches. Considering India's current WTC standing (sixth place with four wins and as many losses), Gill has informally spoken with the BCCI, offering his advice of having a 15-day preparatory camp before every series, as per a Times of India (TOI) report. While having those ahead of the marquee away tours was always part of the discussion before and after India’s away tours lately, considering their records in SENA countries, staging those camps ahead of the home matches would only boost their chances of maintaining dominance in favourable conditions. Also read | After Pakistan, Bangladesh want its T20 WC matches to be staged outside India “Gill was very clear that the team needed better preparation before going into a Test series. He is presenting his vision to the selectors and BCCI with a lot more clarity. It augurs well for Indian cricket as there is a need for a strong captain after Rohit Sharma. The Test and ODI teams are Gill’s. It is important for him to have a bigger say,” the unnamed source added. However, considering the packed international calendar, the BCCI may not be able to stage a 15-day preparatory camp every time, looking to utilise the coaching staff and facilities better at the Centre of Excellence (CoE). “There may be instances where Gambhir will be busy with white-ball teams even as there may be a Test series approaching. Shubman Gill scored heavily for India in the red-ball series against England and later returned to the T20I squad during the Asia Cup 2025, where he was also named vice-captain.
