11 days later, Hope’s magnificent 102* saw West Indies complete a first 250-plus T20I run chase on Indian soil. Crediting the self-belief within the team and his partnerships with Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford, Hope said, “It's going to be a tough chase. But when you chase here in India, you always give yourself a chance. You always think you're in the game, regardless of what score is on the board. But five for two was always going to be challenging.” “When we got that partnership there, myself and Rovman, we just got some more impetus in the innings, and then obviously Sherfane came and did what he did, played really well with the bat, and just gave us that spark that we needed to get over the line today,” Hope explained on what pushed the visitors. “Yes, the thing about cricket, I really believe that we need to bat a lot better in partnerships. It's something that we tend to lack every now and again, but sometimes you just got to sit back, as you say, and watch (your partner) play shots. In that situation there, as long as we kept going at the rate to keep up with the game, then I didn't need to take any unnecessary risk. I thought we were going really nicely, so just about calculating that chase as best we can,” he concluded. Meanwhile, the T20I series is tied at 1-1, with Indore to host the third T20I on Sunday (Oct 11).

West Indies skipper Shai Hope poked fun at Shubman Gill’s viral post with his own ‘250? Cool.’ Instagram caption following a record T20I win in Ranchi.

Shai Hope is in tremendous form on the ongoing India tour, having already smashed three white-ball hundreds so far. He was on song during the 2nd T20I in Ranchi, helping his team complete the second-highest run chase in the format's history (250) with his unbeaten 102. Shortly after, Hope posted, ‘250? Cool.’, taking a swipe at a similar Instagram caption posted by India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill after scoring 223* in the second One-Dayer, helping India complete their highest ODI run chase.

Indian white-ball captains Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer continue to make headlines following the updated ICC rankings. While Gill consolidates his position as the best ODI batter following his second double hundred (223*) against the West Indies during the Guwahati One-Dayer, Iyer has jumped 18 places to break into the top-10 T20I batters list for the first time in his career. The T20I skipper smashed his maiden hundred in the format in Lucknow on Tuesday (Oct 6), hitting an unbeaten 43-ball 102 to see his team home with eight wickets remaining. Iyer sits in seventh place, third-highest amongst Indian batters after Ishan Kishan (1) and Abhishek Sharma (2). While Abhishek’s quickfire 28-ball 61 during the Asian Games final against Pakistan, followed by 21 (10) three days later in the first T20I, helped him retain his place, Kishan’s ominous touch keeps him at the top of men’s T20I rankings. Also read| ‘Team first and team ahead’: India coach Gambhir pens heartfelt wish for chief selector Ajit Agarkar Newly appointed Pakistan T20I captain Sahibzada Farhan is third, followed by the English duo of captain Harry Brook (4) and veteran batter Jos Buttler (5). He climbed 10 places from 47 to 37. Meanwhile, in the bowlers’ rankings, Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed lost his top spot to Adil Rashid following his mediocre returns in the knockouts of the Asian Games in Japan. While he went wicketless for 29 in the semifinal, Abrar could pick up just one in the gold medal match against India. Abrar’s demotion to number two sees Rashid attain the top spot for the eighth time in his career, more than twice as many as anyone at that position over the years. Indian left-arm spinner Axar Patel has also gained places with his match-winning performances lately. After returning with four wickets in two games during the Asiad, and 2/26 against the West Indies in the first T20I, Axar jumped 16 places to number seven.
Gill is No.1 ODI batter
Gill's 334-run tally in three One-Dayers against the West Indies helped him extend his lead over New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, who replaced Kohli at number two. The Kiwi batter slipped to the third position after Kohli hit his record-breaking 55th One-Day hundred in the first match, but returned to the second spot following Kohli’s 29 and 0 in the remaining two matches. Elsewhere, West Indies captain Shai Hope, who scored a match-winning 162 in the final ODI, jumped two places to No. 6, while KL Rahul, whose 129 went in vain, jumped seven spots to 10.

India skipper Shubman Gill has identified pacers Anshul Kamboj and Auqib Nabi as the bowlers who will be part of the ODI mix ahead of the upcoming 2027 ODI World Cup. The statement comes after Gill admitted that there is no time to experiment for India following the team's five-wicket loss against the West Indies on Saturday (Oct. 3) in the third ODI of the three-match series. India, however, won the series 2-1, but the bowlers took a beating in all three matches. Nabi conceded 84/0 in 8.5 overs in the second ODI, and Kamboj went for 82/0 in 9 overs in the third ODI, both on debut.
Gill earmarks Kamboj and Nabi for India's upcoming ODIs ahead of World Cup 2027
India is dealing with an injury to star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who offers balance to the team. Indian ODI captain Shubman Gill wants to fine-tune a few areas despite beating the West Indies 2-1 in the recently concluded ODI series. While the batting prospered for the hosts, with India posting 300-plus totals in all games, including their highest successful run chase in the second One-Dayer, their death bowling and fielding—mainly dropped catches—hurt them most. ‘No Room to Experiment’: Shubman Gill wants India’s best XI in ODIs

India ODI skipper Shubman Gill has his sights set on the ODI World Cup 2027, calling it "unfinished business." Gill was part of India's ODI World Cup 2023 squad that lost at home in the final to Australia. India's record chase of 406 against the West Indies in the second ODI of the three-match series on Wednesday (Sep 30) has not amused head coach Gautam Gambhir at all. India surpassed the 400+ target with 39 balls and eight wickets to spare. This is also only the second time in the history of ODI cricket that a 400+ total has been chased successfully, with the only other instance being South Africa chasing down 434 against Australia. Gambhir, while acknowledging the batting prowess of both teams, said that the bowlers need to have something to work with on the pitch.
Gambhir not amused with India's record chase
Skipper Shubman Gill, who scored 223 not out, added 255 runs for the opening wicket with Rohit Sharma (101) in 26.2 overs to take the game away from the West Indies. Gill also praised Sri Lanka for showing great character while under pressure and said India could learn from their performance. “A lot of positives for us, even learning from the opposition. It sort of tells us, and we were talking at lunch and at tea time, that I don’t think that we could have done (anything) differently,” he added. Padikkal was brilliant, KL was really good, Manav bowled brilliantly, and Prasidh, in both innings, bent their back; both the fast bowlers. So I think we did everything we can,” Gill said. Gill also stressed the need for India to remain consistent in their preparation, performances and approach both on and off the field. “Very excited. I think really exciting times for us. Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has set his sights on the ultimate goal: the WTC Final next year at the Oval. As Team India gears up for its 600th Test match, which gets underway with the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Saturday (Aug 15), Gill wants his side to sweat it out in all nine remaining Tests and aim for the finale. Although India must win at least six or seven Test matches to push for WTC Final qualification, the two-time runners-up should be aiming for all nine, giving themselves the best chance of making it to the UK. That journey, however, starts from Galle, as India and Sri Lanka face off in a two-match Test series. “The main goal is to play the WTC final, which is next year. And we have got about nine Tests, and I think we have to win around six or seven to be able to have a good chance at qualifying. So in terms of that, I think it's a very important series for us," Gill said at the pre-match presser. Also read| 'Very big honour': Shubman Gill on leading India in historic 600th Test Ahead of India’s first Test since losing to South Africa at home in November 2025, Gill featured late in the second innings of the lone warm-up match, which India won. He argued that, should an opportunity arise and if the scheduling allows, India would get more time to prepare for this crucial tour that will determine their fate for next year’s WTC Final. “If we do have an opportunity and if the scheduling allows us to have at least a week or 10 days before the Test match starts, it obviously helps with the preparation. Even last year we had quite a busy schedule in terms of, you know, travelling, playing in England and playing the Asia Cup, then playing the Test match in India, going to Australia. "And then playing the Test match within four days after returning from Australia. So it's never easy for the players to be able to adapt. And most of the players in this team, I think, require a bit of time to be able to adjust to the conditions. And it's not like a lot of the players have a lot of matches or a lot of experience under their belts. So the extra time in preparation definitely helps," added Gill. Meanwhile, as things stand, India is placed fifth on the WTC standings for the current cycle, winning four and losing four in nine contested matches. Australia continue to lead the charts, followed by South Africa, New Zealand and Bangladesh, respectively.

IND vs SL 2026: Ahead of India’s 600th Test, Shubman Gill sets eyes on the WTC Final

Captain Shubman Gill wants India to use their historic 600th Test as the beginning of a fresh push towards the World Test Championship (WTC) final and a series win in Sri Lanka will be important for India to remain in the race. The Men in Blue are currently fifth in the WTC standings with a points percentage of 48.15, while Sri Lanka are sixth with 41.67. Bangladesh are fourth on 58.33, meaning India have plenty of ground to cover with less than a year left before the WTC final. Gill, who has now completed a year as India’s Test captain, said the team must start collecting the wins needed to stay in contention. “I am comfortable in my role as captain now. Our discussions were mainly about keeping wickets in hand because that was the only way we could chase such a big total," he added. What are next ODI assignments for India? India play a lot of ODI before the end of the year with the nearest assignment being three-ODI series against West Indies in Septemeber. The next is five-ODI series in New Zealand in November and then three matches against Sri Lanka in December. Rohit, along with Virat Kohli, has already retired from Test and T20Is, would want to make an impact one last time.

Before the final ODI of the series, there were speculations that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors have told Rohit about moving on from him and the veteran batter not being in plans for 2027 ODI World Cup.
