And this is the thought process the selection committee went ahead with," Gavaskar told SportsTak. Rohit-Kohli surety for 2027 ODI World Cup? The two stalwarts of the Indian cricket have long been in the team on the basis of their performance and leadership quality along with the experience they bring in. In what comes as a massive blow to the defending Asia Cup champions, a star Indian batter was hit on his hand while batting in the nets around 24 hours before the start of the marquee Pakistan match in Dubai on Sunday (Sep 14). Newly-appointed T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill suffered an injury scare to his hand during India’s final full-strength training session ahead of their second 2025 Asia Cup game against their arch-rivals. Gill, who returned to the T20I side and opened with Abhishek Sharma against the UAE, looked uncomfortable after the blow, leaving the team management and fans sweating over his fitness. Per a Times of India (TOI) report, the team physio rushed to check on Gill immediately after he was struck, while helping him walk off the pitch. Simranjeet Singh, who once bowled to India Test captain and T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill in nets, will now turn up for UAE in Asia Cup 2025 against India on Wednesday (Sep 10). Singh's journey to UAE was an unusual one which started in 2021 when the Covid-19 lockdown trapped him in the foreign country. Singh, however, accepted his fate and made the most it including fulfilling the criteria to be eligible for selection in the UAE's national team. With the 2025 Asia Cup just on the brink of getting underway in the UAE, one question that keeps everyone thinking is who opens with Abhishek Sharma, the newly-appointed T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill or keeper-batter or regular opener Sanju Samson? Though Samson held that opener’s slot in the past three series (against Bangladesh, South Africa and England), smashing three top-notch hundreds, Gill’s return to the T20I setup makes him an automatic selection, putting the selectors and the leadership under pressure on whom to choose. Meanwhile, former India head coach Ravi Shastri expressed his preference for who should open the batting between Gill and Samson. While both Samson and Gill are likely to be part of the playing XI at some point in this tournament, their selection conundrum has kept everyone on their toes. Even though Samson made that top spot about his own with star-studded performances, chief selector Ajit Agarkar's recent remarks on his position have put his place in the side in jeopardy. He said that Samson was only the makeshift opener during India’s recent T20I series, as the first-choice batters Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal were occupied with Test commitments. Shastri, on the other hand, thinks otherwise, saying Samson should retain his place (at the top), as Gill can always walk into the playing XI in place of someone else. Also read | Mohammad Nawaz's hat-trick in tri-series final boosts PAK's morale ahead of 2025 Asia Cup - WATCH “He [Samson] is most dangerous in the top three.
