Indian cricket and the rumour mill seem to walk in parallel, with something new coming out of it every day. The latest, however, is that Shreyas Iyer would succeed Rohit Sharma as Team India’s new ODI captain. Even though he is not part of the forthcoming 2025 Asia Cup in the UAE, the rumours state that he leads the race, ahead of Shubman Gill, for India’s One-Day captaincy role. Former cricketer-turned-broadcaster Aakash Chopra addressed the rumour mill, ending this debate with an assertive answer. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said the rumour market has been hot since, shrugging off the latest speculation of Iyer being the frontline choice. "Good question, because the rumour markets are hot. India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 was announced on Tuesday (Aug 19) as the Men in Blue prepare to defend their title under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav. The Indian team, which had a couple of surprises, will now take to the field as they try to build a squad for the T20 World Cup which takes place in their own backyard in less than six months' time. So here is a detailed look at who could be in India’s Playing XI for the Asia Cup 2025 which starts on September 9 while the World Cup remains a long-term objective.
Gill, Abhishek to open?
It is highly likely that the Punjab duo of Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill will lead the Indian team’s Playing XI as they both bring tons of experience at the top. There are multiple reasons why the management could prefer the Gill-Abhishek pairing over Samson-Abhishek is as the former have a good chemistry, playing together for Punjab as well as for India U-19 in the past. This would mean Sanju Samson will have to drop to number three as the wicketkeeper-batting option in the side. Jitesh Sharma is unlikely to make the Playing XI, considering his natural No.6 is already facing stern competition. Therefore, Samson’s position as the only wicketkeeper-batter cements his place in the Playing XI. He will also act as a backup opener in case Gill or Abhishek are unavailable. With Gill, Samson and Abhishek preferred, it won't be a surprise if Tilak Varma misses out. Captain Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya should tick the box for the middle order as they are the backbone of the Playing XI. India Asia Cup 2025 Squad Announcement: Shubman Gill returns, Iyer dropped as BCCI name 15-man team

Shreyas Iyer could be on his way to the UAE for the second time in six months as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to announce the squad for the Asia Cup 2025. Expected to be announced on Tuesday (Aug 19), the selectors' panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, could bring a string of surprises to the squad, including the exclusions of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. So here is a predicted 15-man squad that could travel to the UAE ahead of the Asia Cup 2025.
Samson, Iyer in
Turning to the openers, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are set to retain their place in the side, with both enjoying stellar run. Samson scored two centuries at the back end of 2024 in South Africa, while his ability to keep wickets comes as a welcome addition. With Shubman Gill unlikely to travel after Sunday’s media reports, either Ishan Kishan or Sai Sudharsan could be in frame as back-up opener. The middle order looks more than sorted with captain Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya and Rinku Singh to feature in the Playing XI. In this case, Shreyas Iyer will be more than a good back-up, having shown his class in the IPL. On the other hand, Jitesh Sharma should be the obvious choice as back-up wicketkeeper for Samson, even if Ishan Kishan is considered to make the 15-man squad. Looking at the all-rounder spots, Washington Sundar should act as back-up to Hardik, who has struggled with injuries at times but has the ability to win a match single-handedly. India's probable Asia Cup 2025 squad: Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer in; Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj out

The 2025 Asia Cup is less than three weeks away, with the Indian Team squad selection announcement for the continental tournament just around the corner. With the BCCI men’s selection committee having too much on its shelf to cater to, including taking some bold yet harsh calls, the latest reports suggest that chief selector Ajit Agarkar is willing to welcome Shreyas Iyer into the side. The UAE will host the eight-team tournament, to be played in the T20 format, starting September 9, with arch-rivals India and Pakistan facing off in the marquee clash on September 14 in Dubai. Meanwhile, the opening duo of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal might face the axe. As Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma are expected to retain their places, with Suryakumar Yadav also confirmed to have cleared the fitness test, India’s top order looks settled. Also read | ‘I showed him who the real Pathan is’ – Irfan recalls ‘ugly rivalry’ with Afridi; ex-PAK spinner backs Indian quick A report in Sportstar claims that the selection committee might take a bold step and drop the two biggest names in Indian cricket right now (Gill and Jaiswal) from the 2025 Asia Cup squad, with Agarkar likely to retain the core group that succeeded under Gautam Gambhir’s coaching in the T20Is lately. Besides, considering that the Asia Cup ends on September 28 and the first Test against West Indies begins just days later on October 2, the selectors wish to keep their best batters fresh for the home season. The same report, however, also states that Iyer and Jitesh Sharma could return to the T20I side for the Asia Cup. While Iyer’s credentials need no introductions, having succeeded with two different IPL teams in consecutive years, Jitesh’s T20 game scaled with RCB the past season, impressing everyone.
Why Iyer and not Gill or Jaiswal?
While Gill and Jaiswal are fighting for the places already booked by two superb T20 performers, Samson and Abhishek Sharma, and understandably so if they miss out, Iyer’s selection is not just based on his reputation. Per that report, the selectors want an experienced middle order, with Iyer’s presence fitting the whole idea. Given how instrumental he was during India’s Champions Trophy triumph (in the UAE) early this year, his experience would benefit the Indian Team. Now, if Iyer gets a recall, either Shivam Dube or Rinku Singh could make way for him, with Tilak Varma also expected to retain his place in the side. Meanwhile, India is placed alongside Pakistan, Oman and the UAE in Group A.

BCCI chief selector Agarkar to reward Shreyas Iyer with Asia Cup call-up; Gill, Jaiswal out of selection race – Report

The BCCI men’s selection committee is due to meet in Mumbai early next week to pick the squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, to be played in the T20 format. With the UAE hosting this eight-team tournament (September 9-28), the selectors and Suryakumar Yadav, the T20I captain, who will also be present during the meeting, will finalise those excelling in the shortest format. While all-format batter Shubman Gill’s name is popping up among the hot favourites, even ahead of attacking opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, there is another name – KL Rahul, who is also running for a place in the Asia Cup squad. However, former cricketer-turned-broadcaster Aakash Chopra has his reservations around Rahul’s selection, saying that although his IPL numbers are brilliant, it’s his mindset and inconsistent approach which is holding him back from going all out for a place in the T20I side. “He is a good player. If you see his IPL numbers, they are outstanding. In the recent past, no player has been a 600-run bank like him. However, a reputation has developed that he plays very slow at times. Shubman Gill, fresh from his stellar showing in the recent Test series against England, is emerging as the player in focus ahead of the Asia Cup T20 in the UAE next month. However, he may have competition from Axar Patel for the vice-captain’s role in the Indian squad. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is also set to feature in the tournament, though he is likely to be rested for the first Test against the West Indies in early October. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is expected to name the Asia Cup squad on August 19 or 20, depending on when the Centre of Excellence’s Sports Science team submits the medical report for all players. This includes skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who has resumed batting practice at the nets in Bengaluru. While some tough selection calls lie ahead, the selectors are keen to maintain the continuity that has brought success since Suryakumar took charge as T20 captain. Axar Patel was the vice-captain during the recent home series against England, while Gill had the role when Suryakumar was first appointed full-time skipper in Sri Lanka last year. "Abhishek Sharma is world's No. 1 T20 batter in last ICC rankings. Sanju Samson has been fantastic last season with both bat and gloves. So it will certainly be a tough call but Shubman in current form (although in Tests) can't be ignored. He had a good IPL also. Problem for selectors is, there are too many performers at the top of the order," a BCCI source privy to developments was quoted saying to news agency PTI. This surplus makes it difficult to slot in Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan. KL Rahul, now India’s first-choice ODI wicketkeeper, is also unlikely to be considered as he does not bat in the middle order.
Second wicketkeeper race
Samson is almost certain to take the first keeper’s spot, leaving the second slot to be contested between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel. Jurel featured in the last T20 series, while Jitesh impressed as a finisher during RCB’s IPL-winning campaign.
Injury update
Hardik Pandya remains India’s primary white-ball seam-bowling all-rounder, but Nitish Kumar Reddy is unlikely to recover from the injury he picked up against England. Shivam Dube, who made an impactful comeback in that series, is expected to retain his place. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar will provide spin-bowling all-round options.
Seam attack question
With Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh confirmed, the third seamer’s slot will likely go to either Prasidh Krishna—who took 25 wickets in the last IPL—or Harshit Rana, known for his heavy deliveries.
Likely Contenders for Asia Cup Squad:
Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wicket-keeper), Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana/Prasidh Krishna, Hardik Pandya, Jitesh Sharma/Dhruv Jurel.

From Ajit Wadekar to Shubman Gill: Meet seven Indian skippers to win Test match in England

With little over a month to go for the start of the Asia Cup 2025, defending champions India will be ready to conquer the crown again as they set their sights on the latest continental adventure. Ahead of the continental showpiece, India will look to boost a strong squad with management set to consider Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal for the tournament. The duo was out of contention during India’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2024; however, latest media reports are to be believed, they could be in the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025.
Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal in contention for Asia Cup?
"There is a five week break and with no cricket around, these three should walk into any T20 squad despite stupendous show by Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. In 21 days in Asia Cup, if one plays till the final, there are 6 T20 games and that's not much of a workload. Five India-England Tests down to the wire should be sufficient to persuade the sporting world to leave the format alone, reckoned Shubman Gill after a thrilling victory at The Oval on Monday (August 4). All of the five matches had gone to day five, an exemplary promotion for the format that is under threat from the boom in franchise cricket. “Test cricket should be, as it is, in my opinion, it is the most, rewarding and satisfying format, you work the hardest, to be able to, get a win, and, the best thing, about this format, is it always gives you a second chance, which none of the other formats give,” Gill said in the post-match press conference. “So, if you keep working hard, if you keep doing the right things, there is always a second chance. From Shubman Gill to KL Rahul: Top five Indian run-scorers in Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy

Indian Test captain Shubman Gill fell shy of breaking batting hero Sunil Gavaskar’s record tally for most runs by an Indian in a Test series. Resuming batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal just after lunch on day three at the Oval, Gill, taking the stride against Gus Atkinson, was trapped in front of the wicket on the first delivery. Umpire Kumar Dharmasena raised his finger in no time, with Gill reviewing it straight away. Although the replays hinted at a slight deflection when the ball crossed the bat, the Ultra-Edge showed no spike, leaving Gill with no option but to walk back to the pavilion. Gill finished his first series as the Indian Test captain with a whopping 754 runs across five Tests, the second-most by an Indian and just behind Gavaskar, who continues to hold the top spot and the record with 774 runs during the 1971 series against the West Indies. Gill, however, is also second on the list of captains with most runs in a Test series, with Sir Donald Bradman leading the chart with 810 runs against England (1936/37).
Watch his wicket -

Meanwhile, Gill had the perfect start to this series. In his debut game as the new Test captain, Gill hammered twin hundreds in Leeds before smashing his career-best (269) in the second Test at Edgbaston. After a mediocre outing at Lord’s, Gill returned to form in the fourth Test in Manchester, hitting his third triple-digit score in the second innings. Despite his mammoth outings, India trailed (1-2) leading into the fifth and final Test at the Oval. The Indian captain had two innings in London to go past Gavaskar and Bradman on separate lists, but failed to do so after scoring 21 and 11 across two innings.
India win first session on day three
After being reduced to 77 for two at stumps on the second day, the batting pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Akash Deep made merry early on day three, with the fortune also favouring them. While Jaiswal completed yet another hundred in this series (in the second session), Akash Deep’s batting was all that made headlines in the first. Coming in as the night watchman, the right-handed batter slammed his maiden Test fifty, hitting 66 and stitching a 100-plus-partnership stand with Jaiswal for the third wicket. All-rounder Jamie Overton removed him to break the stand.

Gill is also second on the list of captains with most runs in a Test series, with Sir Donald Bradman leading the chart with 810 runs against England (1936/37).

With India preparing for the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, there has been a pitch access controversy taking centre stage at The Oval. India skipper Shubman Gill has now spoken on the issue between head coach Gautam Gambhir and Oval pitch curator Lee Fortis. While India practiced on Tuesday, Gambhir had a heated confrontation with Lee over the practice facilities. Stepping aside, the Indian head coach gestured wildly, pointing a finger and mouthing a couple of words. India's batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, was then spotted intervening, leading Lee aside and talking briefly to him. Whereas Kotak seemed to defuse the tension in explaining their position, Gambhir, standing close to the nets, wagged his finger at Lee and angrily declared, “You don't tell us what to do.” India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate joined Kotak in his exchange with Lee, as Gambhir kept on making his point from the other side. Lee uttered a few words to Gambhir before finally walking out of the scene. Lee was asked regarding the whole affair, but he preferred not to open up before the reporters and said, “It's not my job to be happy with him. I don't know, you have to ask him.” Kotak, and a couple of Indian management members, were observed attempting to clarify the situation to an English official. Kotak did most of the talking during that time. Addressing the pre-final Test press conference, Gill said, "I don't know what exactly happened yesterday and why the pitch curator did what he did. We have played four matches, and no one tried to stop us. Everyone has played so much cricket, and the coaches and the captain have gone and seen the wicket so many times. I don't know what the fuss was all about." He went on to clarify that it is not unusual for captains and coaches to walk over the pitch up close, a standard step in preparation, provided that the individual is barefoot or has rubber spikes on. "If a pitch curator is going to come and ask us to not look at the wicket and look at the wicket from three metres from behind, that is not something that has happened to us before. We have been playing cricket for such a long time and as long as you are under rubber spikes or you are barefoot, you are allowed to look at the wicket from close quarters, and that is the job of the coach and the captain. So I don't know why the curator didn't let us or didn't allow us to do that. It is not the first time that we were having a look at the wicket," he added. "We have been here for almost, I think, two months and like I said, a coach has every right to be able to go close quarters and have a look at the wicket and I didn't think there was anything wrong with that. I actually don't know why the curator would not allow us to go have a look at the wicket," the India captain signed off.

Team India will have a task in their hand as they face England in the final Test of the five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on Thursday (July 31). Trailing 1-2 in the series, Shubman Gill & Co. will need to win at any cost or else walk empty-handed in the five-match series. While winning a match is in India’s hands and down to their efforts, one factor is not in control of the visitors, as they now stand a rare probability of losing 15 consecutive tosses in international cricket.
Rare probability could be a reality
As things stand, India have lost 14 consecutive tosses, achieving the rare feat which has a probability of 1/16384. However, if the Gill loses another toss, fifth in a row in the ongoing series, the probability will reach 1/32678. No team in international cricket has achieved this unfortunate feat, but with one more toss, it could soon become a reality. The visitors have lost all four tosses so far in the series and Gill has continued to ride on the poor luck at toss despite taking over from Rohit Sharma. Across formats, three Indian captains have taken charge of the side, but none has succeeded in winning a toss. Suryakumar Yadav was the last Indian captain to win a toss when he did so against England in the third T20I in January 2025. When England took a lead of 311 runs in the first innings over India in Manchester, the chances of draw seemed bleak if not non existent.
